What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Cake Wrecks the Game Show?

Some cakes are like those ink blot tests you saw in grade school: baffling blobs of color open to interpretation. Well, not exactly; cakes are usually supposed to look like something in particular. Sometimes they taste better, too.

Anyway, since I've gotten a few of these "ink blot" type cakes submitted, I thought it'd be fun to add a little suspense to your daily dose of Wreckage. That's right, boys and girls, now it's time to play...

"Guess That Wreck!"

Everyone ready? Ok, clear your mind of all thoughts. Now, scroll down and tell me what you see:

"What's that? Ah, you see the moon cooking on the grill in a paper bag? [scribbling on notepad] Interesting, veeery interesting... [looking over glasses] And tell me, how IS your relationship with your mother?"

Check back tomorrow for the "answer": I'll post a picture of what the cake was supposed to look like. In the mean time, let's see who can come up with the most outrageous explanation. I may even post the top 3 guesses here, so bring on the funny, folks; fame and fortune await!*

Thanks to Dana W. for inspiring a brand new category! Oh, and Dana? Don't go giving away the answer just yet, k?

*By "fame" I mean a shout-out to your posting name, and "fortune" is used more in the "destiny" sense of the word than the "wealth or riches" sense. So in other words, no, you won't be getting any money*. Unless someone sends it to you, of course. But that someone would not be me. So probably not.

* Or begetting any money, either; 'cuz that'd just be weird. And wrong. But mostly weird.

Erm, I see some kind of hotdog/hamburger thing going on, with loads of creepy-crawlies (ants or spiders maybe) around the base. With a randomly placed fleur-de-lys, just for the heck of it.

I thought it was a really ugly bedspread, until I saw the helmets. Then, when I squinted, I almost saw a football stadium with decapitated heads all around.

I can't wait to see what it was supposed to look like!

October 6, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterLiz C

I'm gonna guess that it's a giant lobster + steak meal (surf & turf) garnished with little football helmets. Definitely unappetizing and almost unrecognizable but the orange stipes and grill marks gave it away.

October 6, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterCrazyCakeLady

What do I think it is supposed to be?
The stadium where the New Orleans team plays, judging by the Fleur de Lis and the football helmets with numbers.

What does it look like?
Here's the scenario as I see it.
Customer: What is your special today?
Waiter: Ah, you are in luck, Ma'am. Tonight we are serving our famous French Steak, Salmon Ice Cream. It is a juicy steak straight from the BBQ topped with an entire salmon with basil leaves in the shape of the Fleur de Lis, and topped with a mound of our slightly baked vanilla ice cream. This is carried to your table by our local football team.
Customer: Okay, yes, I'll have that.

My three year old asked me if I was looking at a football couch with a spider on it. I personally don't even have a guess.

October 6, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

It's a big slab of salmon or tuna on the grill, surrounded by little beetles... in France.

October 6, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterDoody Mac

I am sure it is a really really REALLY bad attempt of the Superdome.

My 4 year old said it was an ugly couch and old rug with toys on it.

Funny thing I think her explination makes a lot more sense than the Superdome.

October 6, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterNeen

Is it the back of a bald guy with a tie-dyed scarf on? Maybe the bald guy is a coach and the little helmets represent hallucinations of his players.

I'm going to second what Delilah said up there near the top. I thought tuna sushi too. I'm glad to see I'm not alone. It looks like tuna sushi on burned rice with coffee beans. Not sure what the top thing is, but I'll go with her tombstone idea.

October 6, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterReiza

I'm pretty sure that the superdome were the Saints play.

October 6, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterTiff

I don't know why, but they remind me of the LikeLike monsters of the Zelda series... Especially in The Legend Of Zelda (that's the first game).... In which they looked absolutely like giant salami sofas. Sort of.

(P.S: Please do not take this as advertising... Though I'm a fangirl :3 But still, no no no, no advertising!)

October 6, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterShadow Shaivya

At very first glance it looked like a spider being grilled. There are bugs supporting the grill.

October 6, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterEleanor

Still looks like a hat to me.

A very snuggly hat.

Looks... edible.

October 6, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterCleocatra

I am guessing the Super dome after hurricane Katrina and before reconstruction???

October 6, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterAdele

Ok I get the muddy football field with the yardlines marked w/ little footballs.and the new orleans saints fleur de lis. but that is the saddest looking dome i can imagine!

October 6, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterMaire

If I squint at my screen I can see little numbers beneath the olives with dorsal stripes. So I guess they are football helmets, and the rest must be a football field. The New Orleans Saints are burning in purgatory?

I like delilah's answer about sushi.

October 6, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterTamlynn

It's a burning UFO (allied with the French monarchy, hence the fleur-de-lis) taking off from behind a wooden fence, leaving behind the helmets of all the football players that were just abducted, which were numbered for scientific cataloging purposes.

October 6, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterMelanie H.

It's a splayed open hotdog (made in France) on a really dark bun, leaned up against a rock with a bunch of beetles storming in for a bite.

October 6, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterWalking With Scissors

It is just me but at first I thought those round things round the edge were bugs of some sort. Then I looked closer and saw they were American Football helmets.

October 6, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterLaura

Looks like a salmon skinned itself with that hook, died, and washed on shore between a pier and a rock.

- Tooty Zelda

October 6, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterTooty Zelda

Those things on the bottom are definitely football helmets, and the thing int he middle is definitely a fleur de lis. What two things did you never expect to see together on a cake?

October 6, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterLindsey

oooh, someone dropped their souffle on all those cockroaches.

October 6, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterJonathan

i think either I missed the point or several others did. We weren't supposed to guess what it was supposed to be...but what it could possible in our wild imaginations be. correct?

Either way what i came up with in my warped head (and i must say college football is ALL i watch no NFL)
obviously it is a grave. The grey head stone at top, the dug up and opened empty casket (on fire for symbolism, that the saints team will not die they will never be back here) and the beetles (w/helments) were inside till the fire broke out. and they had to scramble!

Thats my story and im sticking to it!

October 6, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterJennifer H in SC

Am I the only person who at first thought those were creepy beetles holding something even creepier, but as of yet, unamed? Oh well, guess that's just me. And I am clearly not all right in the head...

October 6, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

I thought COUCH, GRILL, BOY SCOUTS, FOOTBALL MEN GETTING CRUSHED, I'm leaning more towards PIANO...carried by a bunch of football men.

October 6, 2008 | Unregistered Commenterdebbiearnn

It looks like this cake has a guest appearance on CSI and this is its autopsy scene.

October 6, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterMy Ice Cream Diary

it's a fireplace, complete with fire and stone hearth. ooh, and decorative stone around the bottom.

October 6, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterSarah

A commemoration of the end of the Reign of Terror during the French Revolution?

October 6, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterBaya

It's a modern-day variation on the parable of the Princess and the Pea. Instead of a bed, we have a sleeping bag embroidered with a fleur de lis. Instead of peas, we have teensy plastic football helmets.

Theory #2: It's Gulliver's sleeping bag, and he's just killed the entire football-playing population of Lilliputia.

October 6, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterTanya Brown

Even with the fleur de lis and the helmet/football and numbers, it still looks like a striped couch with a giant ottoman supported by helmets. For the life of me I can't remember that giant couch sitting outside and dwarfing the Superdome.

October 6, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterPrinceton McKinney

Well, I know it's supposed to represent *something* for the Saints, maybe a couch? However, it looks like a dissected Saints fan, perhaps a portion of the thigh?

October 6, 2008 | Unregistered Commenterselaura

I think it's football related, but before that I thought it was some sort of coffin with bugs crawling out of it!

October 6, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterJennifer

Thats the New Orleans Saints Superdome...right? But, is it on fire or something?

October 6, 2008 | Unregistered Commenterkateypie35

I cheated and read the comments first. After reading that it was supposed to be the Superdome, my first thought was "Why are there little bugs all around it?" Then I figured that surely there were an enormous number of bugs post-Katrina.

Then I saw other people say they were football helmets. Oops.

October 6, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterErinM

moon, a giant butterflied salmon with a fleur de Lis tattoo and a steak fell on some football players.

October 6, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterDotC

So, it's easy to assume it's a football stadium for the Saints. But upon closer inspection, you can see that the cakerist (a professional cake artist) was really creating a visual metaphor renouncing French Tyranny and Napoleon.
I submit the fleur-de-lis, a common symbol for France, practically burning at the stake.
All the helmeted figures vainly trying to transport their beleaguered icon represent the Corsican army.
The large gray area in fact represents the failed battle on Russian tundra; the brown earth in front is clearly the Battle of Waterloo. (It had rained the night before, so you KNOW that ground was muddy!)
Since much conjecture has been made about Napoleon's death, and many scientists now believe he was poisoned with arsenic, it might not be advisable to eat this cake. The authenticity may be a little TOO accurate. In the interest of education and history, we should allow it to stay completely intact and serve as an educational tool for years to come.

October 6, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterPlazaJen

To me it looks like a torso. The little football helmets could be the belt, the brown part could be a piece of the skirt or pants, the orange could be a top with a brooch on it and the silver could be a very ghostly looking upper chest area

October 6, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterPam

It has to be a the Superdome after Katrina, because that cake is a disaster.

October 6, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterAmy

It looks like a french UFO landing on some hamburger-shaped dock, while little Martians with helmets reminiscent of Little Debbie Snacks gather around to celebrate under the glowing neon of the UFO sidepanels.

And my relationship with my mother is excellent, thank you : p

October 6, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterRadioRae

It is a poofy treasure chest, with numbered, striped green olives spilling out of it.

October 6, 2008 | Unregistered Commenterlois

I think it is supposed to be the Superdome. But depicting it in post Katrina destruction with a team of crushed New Orleans Saints below it seems a little harsh. :) Of course it could explain the odd red coloring...

October 6, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterLutherLiz

First I thought the little helmets were supposed to be beetles, so that had me thinking along the lines of some kind of crypt or something. Then I saw that they were numbered, so then I was thinking it was some kind of beetle expert who keeps numbered beetles, so the middle part was the hive (or whatever beetles live in). But then I realized they were actually helmets and I stopped paying attention because I don't like football.

October 6, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterChiclet

Originally I was thinking a couple of sushi rolls, but with the fleur de lis I thought maybe the Bastille jail in Paris. And then I saw the brown circles with white stripes and numbers below them and decided it must have something to do with football.

October 6, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterErin

Well, it looks like a Fleur de Lis, so for the New Orleans saints. However, it looks like it is in a coffin on fire that's built into a rock with dirt at the bottom and giant bugs eating into the dirt.

But, others have said the Super Dome, and with the Fleur de Lis, I'd guess that they are right on guessing what it is supposed to be.

October 6, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterBridget Delaney

The guesses about the Superdome are probably right BUT to me it looks like BBQ ribs before and after. The fleshy before right after being removed from the pig and after being overcooked on a stone pit over hot dogs. The Fleur de lis is added for a classy touch.

October 6, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Well, I guess it is obvious that I am not one bit into football, because no matter how hard I look it, I can't see footballs or stadium. My first thought was why are there all those big colace pills around the base of the cake? (Colace is a stool a nurse I handed thousands of colace pills when I worked in the hopital.) All I can think is an ugly abdominal wound. That cake looks very unappetizing.

October 6, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterKateri

looks like a sofa riding on a giant square hamburger carried by bugs to me.

October 6, 2008 | Unregistered Commenterstumphed-xx

I thought it was a french bed with weird little bedbugs crawling out of it! (Before I clocked that they were football helmets)
