What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Happy Earth Day to You...

Hey everybody. This is john (the hubby of Jen) taking on today's post since Jen Yeah. So how 'bout that post yesterday, huh? It's like one minute everything's all hunky-dory, and then next thing I know Jen's threatening to strike over something to do with a Disney font. Last I saw, she was on the couch in her memory foam slippers with a pint of Chunky Monkey and watching SGA reruns. I believe her exact words to me were, "YOU write it!!!" And I see the facial tic is back. Greeeaaat.

Which brings us to Earth Day!!! (Wait. Why are we still doing Earth Day cakes? It was like a week ago. *sigh*) Earth Day!!! Who doesn't love cake for their Earth Day? I thought it would be hard to find Earth Day cakes but it turns out those kooky decorators are still making them!

Our first cake was actually made for some guy named Scopios. I mean, what a crazy name, right? But this guy must really love Earth Day 'cause someone got him a cake.

Too bad this decorator doesn't know how to spell!*

And how about this next one?

Hey Tori Beth! Earth Day's been around for a long time ya know. What, were you born, like, a year ago?

And finally, here's the last one, which is why it's called finally.

Who else thinks we should take the airbrush out of the hands of the bakers? Who's with me?!?! You know. 'Cause the meat folks could put them to better use. For ham glazes. And signs.

So that's my post. Hopefully Jen will be back soon, although I just heard her tell the cat "Spaceship Earth is IN Epcot" between mouthfuls.

Katie V., Chelle, & Sarah A., Wreck On!

*See, what I did here is I took the "B" out of the word "Birthday" to make it sound like "Earth Day" even thought that is clearly not what the cake was supposed to say. I did this because there were almost no actual Earth Day cakes submitted, which means that either a) they were all fantastic, b) there were none made, or c) everybody has thrown their batteries into a lake and, thusly, nobody has a working camera. Thank you and good night!

I think everyone who kept commenting over and over about the "Epcot center" fiasco are hiding themselves as anonymous now saying "i knew it was spaceship earth!"

where are the apologies is what I want to know.

and, p.s. everyone who is pointing out the photoshop mistakes ::facepalm:: is this your first time on the internet?? the b is missing for 'earth day' get it? irthday? now don't you feel foolish

I think that I might be a little bit in love with "Anonymous" that posted at 1:12. <2

April 29, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterNicole

The comments are almost as funny as the actual post. Nice job on irth Day. I'm thinking it could catch on and replace the other Earth Day. Think how much could be saved if we celebrated with one less letter.

April 29, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterLindalou

Wow...the photoshopping on those Irthday cakes looks so....PROFESSIONAL ;)

Funny post, John!

April 29, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMe

The first one looks like it has a half eaten cookie on top. Blech.

April 29, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterdenestria

Oh, we are streeeeetching, aren't we?

Strategically speaking, it probably wasn't the smartest thing to dedicate an entire week to a non-holiday for which almost zero cake-related content exists.

I almost think the insanity-inducing repetitive comments were a form of blogger karma.

This too shall pass, guys.

Sadly, I noticed this about the readers a month or so ago when a commenter asked what a CCC was, and I jumped in and answered in a comment, and lo and behold, someone asked again about what in the world is a CCC not ten comments after.

I LOVE the comments, as they are entertaining, and most see stuff I missed. But, thank you, John for teaching folks oh, so gently, with a great and funny post! Thank you, thank you, thank you!

And can I ask for forgiveness ahead of time when we misspell and use bad grammar??

April 29, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterjoyce

bahahahahaa omg this cracked me up. i can't believe all the people so quickly pointed out that it was EPCOT and how OBVIOUS it was with the Disney Font even.. *HIGH FIVE*

i love it cuz Jen plainly wrote it's name out (spaceship earth).. and btw.. i went on there recently cuz we went to Florida for new years.. and that space ride thingie in there is pretty damn cool. yep. true story.
but people were OH-so-informed enough to point out that "oh.. that's Epcot".. but clearly had no idea what the hell that big space ball thingie was actually called to completely not even notice that she wrote it plain as day right underneath it.

props to you Jen!! hehe

haha anyhoo.. you guys crack me up.
keep it up!

poor Jen.. lol

I was sorely tempted to send in a scan of the Walmart newspaper insert which featured a cake with a paper doll as the "topper". The paper doll's skirt was folded like a fan and she was lying down on the job. I wonder if Walmart inserts are the same all over the country?

April 29, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterjoyce

Super post John! Jen, I felt your pain yesterday. Please come back and we promise to restore your faith in your readers.

May your future be full of buttercream, puns, and laughter!

Thank you for all your hard work!

April 29, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterlisadh

maybe we could petition blogger to replace the word verification with something more like 'basic intelligence verification' or 'reading comprehension verification'... Of course that would take away the fun of having a 'comments wrecks' blog, but might help a bit with retaining the sanity...

It always amuses me how residents of a certain continent require those "after-mirth" explanations after a joke in order to "get it". Amusing :)

April 29, 2009 | Unregistered Commentermeowsqueak

Hey John, those cakes are photoshopped.

You're Welcome

April 29, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMary

this message is for Jen, so, John, please go away.
ahh, nothing better than some Stargate Atlantis and the hotness that is Joe Flanigan (and his hair), and the hypnotic hands of David Hewlett to escape all the crap that lands on you on the bad days. sigh. ok, i think i have just talked myself into a couple of episodes of season 4. cheer up! season 5 dvds comes out this summer. mine is on pre-order at Amazon. cant wait.

(pssst. if the ice cream isnt doing it for you, have you seen the infamous beach photos?)

I can't wait until my Irthday...:) hehe

April 29, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterDin Din Check!

Okay... I am going to come clean. I was one of THOSE people that commented on it being Epcot, but at least let me defend myself.
1. I did not know what Spaceship Earth was.
2. I wasn't "correcting" Jen, from the caption, I thought she was guessing...Usually I can pick up on her jokes...I guess I was a little slow that morning.
3. Even though my comment showed up as around the 25th, when I went on there were zero comments made. least for myself, I thought I was being helpful (like how we all were trying to figure out the smoking lamb). I apologize and Jen, this is the best website ever!!! You rock!!

April 29, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterrebecca

Aww, don't be upset, Jen! Although I have to say I approve of your way of blowing off steam. May your SGA reruns be full of blowing up Wraith ships and other things that will relieve stress. ;)

Also, I love your blog and your sense of humor. Please don't stay away long!

April 29, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterBecky

you should make a rule:
Mr/Mrs Anonymous who posted at 10:39 A.M.-he did it on purpose!! If you had read the whole post you MIGHT have figured that out! grr..some people...*shaking head furiously back and forth*

April 29, 2009 | Unregistered Commenter*James*

To dear Rebecca and the others from yesterday's post,

You guys are awesome. Jen and I know that ya'll were just being helpful and it was totally our fault for not moderating comments quickly enough. (Side note: We really do have to moderate comments. Trust me. Most of you wouldn't like what the trolls write.)

So please, continue to be part of the comments board. Days like yesterday keep it interesting.

Re the couple of comments referring to the "crazy cat lady" scenario: it's a myth! There's nothing crazy about having cats around.
Cats have a very calming, soothing influence on the nerves, and have even been shown to lower blood pressure.
My prescription: cats ala mode.

April 29, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterRobyn

John, your post today made me laugh out loud, at least half at myself because I didn't realize you photoshopped until the second photo.

Hey wow you DO have a user for yourself John (Hubby of Jen). I should've checked that before commenting (although it has been relevant in the past! I'm just a bit slow to mention it :P) OK well have a nice day.

Such poor photoshopping... lol.

April 30, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterBilby P. Dalgyte

I read the first 12 comments or so on the last one and my head about exploded...poor Jen. Get well soon.

April 30, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterHeidi

To everyone saying it's photoshopped:

::epic facepalm::

As someone who uses Photoshop every day as part of my job, let me just explain to you ... very slowly ... that it takes less than five minutes with the program to learn that there's this nifty little tool called the Clone Stamp that would not only be easier to use than cutting out and enlarging/moving a circle, but would also produce results so believable that you'd be tempted to call the "wreckmaker" up yourself and tell her what for.

I have faith in him that, had he wanted you to believe these were actual wrecks while photoshopping them, he could have made them at least mostly convincing.

He didn't.

How many forum members does it takes to change a light bulb?

1 to change the light bulb and to post that the light bulb has been changed
14 to share similar experiences of changing light bulbs and how the light bulb could have been changed differently
7 to caution about the dangers of changing light bulbs
1 to move it to the Lighting section
2 to argue then move it to the Electricals section
7 to point out spelling/grammar errors in posts about changing light bulbs
5 to flame the spell checkers
3 to correct spelling/grammar flames
6 to argue over whether it's "lightbulb" or "light bulb" ... another 6 to condemn those 6 as stupid
2 industry professionals to inform the group that the proper term is "lamp"
15 know-it-alls who claim they were in the industry, and that "light bulb" is perfectly correct
19 to post that this forum is not about light bulbs and to please take this discussion to a lightbulb forum
11 to defend the posting to this forum saying that we all use light bulbs and therefore the posts are relevant to this forum
36 to debate which method of changing light bulbs is superior, where to buy the best light bulbs, what brand of light bulbs work best for this technique and what brands are faulty
7 to post URL's where one can see examples of different light bulbs
4 to post that the URL's were posted incorrectly and then post the corrected URL's
3 to post about links they found from the URL's that are relevant to this group which makes light bulbs relevant to this group
13 to link all posts to date, quote them in their entirety including all headers and signatures, and add "Me too"
5 to post to the group that they will no longer post because they cannot handle the light bulb controversy
4 to say "didn't we go through this already a short time ago?"
13 to say "do a Google search on light bulbs before posting questions about light bulbs"
1 forum lurker to respond to the original post 6 months from now and start it all over again.

oh, goodness. I am very discouraged by stupid people. I love the "irthday" joke and the photoshopping, but some of these comments are killing me....

1)the one for the one year old is a phony.. looks like they photoshop/cut n pasted the upper righthand corner of the cake over the B in birthday. Jen and john, you guys need to screen better, or your site will lose it's cred.

2)That second cake looks digitally edited to remove the "B"

john-- I am sorry your humor was lost on people. isn't it rough to be called out by people who are wrong(jen agrees, i know)? Funny that they only noticed the "problem" with one cake. sheesh!

April 30, 2009 | Unregistered Commentersapna

The Tori Beth cake... that is a bad case of PhotoChopping.

Only because I do a lot of this for side work, I noticed that the candle that sits where the 'B' should be is actually a clone stamp of the red candle in the upper right corner (Look hoe the counter is in the middle of the cake in a nice perfect semi circle)

Not to say it isn't still a wreck, but the misspelling is more photo editing than mistake I think.

May 1, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterDaddy

nice photoshop John! i couldnt do better! "Irthday" Hilarious!!!! when i first saw the Irthday post i was like, "Huh!" cause i forgot to read the post!!!

May 2, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterCHEEZEBURGER

No it's Spaceship earth
No, It's EPCOT
Epcot isn't capitilized anymore
Epcot Center?

NO, you idiot, it isn't called "center" anymore

But it is Spaceship Earth @ Epcot?
Who's on first
You photoshopped so you could be first didn't you?

Crikey, no wonder Jen's incommunicado
*heads for the closet for the big, fuzzy, St. Bernard slippers, then to freezer for some Cherry Garcia*
Move over Jen, I brought "I, Mudd."

May 4, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMag's Nags

All 3 of those are very bad fakes. Detracts from the site as a whole! Let's go out and find real earthday wrecks.

October 17, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterLacey

Um, not to be the devil's advocate, but the last two cakes on this post were photo shopped. It's quite obvious...sorry.

October 19, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Dea (How many forum members does it takes to change a light bulb?) - that made me LOL even more than the posts!

Can't help wishing I'd see the post before all those comments were deleted. The mind boggles.

February 28, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Wooow, I feel like writing a song "Where have all the posts gone?" I was just reading the FAQ which has the question on EPCOT? So now I am reminded again how the craziness ensued. I find it interesting that no comments were deleted from the previous days post. I only hope that none of the hilarity was deleted. Thanks Jon, and Jen for such a great blog, keep going strong 'cuz you never know when there might be another EPCOT right around the corner.

Oh great. Now we're going to start an EPCOT about Photoshop.
"It was photoshopped!"
"I'm professional and I KNOW it was photoshopped!"
"Guys, it wasn't photoshopped."
"YES IT WAS! This blog needs to step it up!"
"People, I just realized that that thing is photoshopped."

July 22, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAyy

@ Dea - LOL!!!!!

@Ayy - Heeheehee!!! Yeah, it looked like it for awhile...and looks like there might be one for today's post (1/3/2013). We had 2 comments in a row (4 is the minimum for an Epcot, ya know) complaining that the cakes weren't really wrecked because, apparently, *everyone* knows that you should make sure the decorators don't use buttercream to replicate a decoration done in fondant because that's simply not possible...I'm surprised Theadare hasn't made a re-appearance with his laser pistol'd think these people would know better than to cross Theadare...(or Jen & John(thoj), for that matter...)
