What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Sunday Sweets: WoW

Some of you know that Jen and I are currently geeking out at the biggest geek fest in the south, Dragon*Con. (For the 98.6 percent of you who read this blog but are not, in the strictest sense of the word, "geeks", Dragon*Con is a convention where the majority of the attendees could tell you, without hesitation, the complete works of Joss Whedon and how Jar Jar Binks single-handedly destroyed Lucas' credibility. But, I digress.

This week, we're going to broaden your horizons with something so geeky that even I know nothing about it: World of Warcraft. Apparently, this is a "game" where "players" spend untold thousands of hours walking around and killing things and otherwise forfeiting what was left of their "lives." To do this, I asked Jen's brother Ben, who is himself a recovering WoW addict, to help decipher these cakes. So let's get started, shall we?

(Submitted by Kelly J. and made by Swank Cakes.)

Our first cake is a laptop with a screen-shot of a member of the Horde called the Tauren shaman. We think that the book cake under it says "Shaman for Dummies."

And here's another angle:

"Gold farming" is a term loosely defined as selling imaginary money for real money. Kind of like the stock market, only dominated by Chinese corporations. (Okay, exactly like the stock market.)

(Submitted by Rachel T. and made by Crazy Cakes.)

This next one is actually awesome even if you know nothing about WoW. Since I went through the effort of finding out, however, I might as well share. She is an Alliance Paladin. Or maybe a warrior. Do you feel more educated? Moving on then...

(Submitted by JJ T. and Made by Art Eats Bakery.)

Here we have a bunch of well-made boxes with a chest on top. The only real WoW reference is the red banner with the Horde symbol. I get the impression that everybody who plays WoW is in the Horde (the bad guys) and that the Alliance (the good guys) are all "noobs," or geeks of lesser standing (as determined by those who really are in no position to judge). Got all that?

(Submitted by Tess L. and made by Anne Marie Martino.)

Okay, now we're cooking with gas. This is a shield which has been emblazoned with the symbol for - say it with me - the Horde. Nice woodgraining though.

And finally, we have a cake based on one of the most popular places in the game, the bank in Ogrimmar, the capital city of the Horde.

(Submitted by Jennifer E. and made by Eden Cakes.)

For reference, here's a screen shot of the building in the game:

On a side note, see those itty bitty game people with the colorful words over their heads? Those are your IT guys, your Microsoft employees, and your computer repair people. In short, the folks who keep the internets running and, thusly, control the world. So be nice to them, or someday, when you least expect it, you just might find yourself barred from Facebook. And then what will you do? Call somebody?

A big thanks to Ben, logger of untold hours in Horde-y land, for finally putting all that knowledge to good use.

(Just kidding, Ben! We all know nothing good comes from the Horde.)

Also, I totally forgot to mention that I am so jealous you guys are at Dragon*Con! If you see any Browncoats, tell 'em hi for me!

September 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterNikki L.

Oh the nerdity. I <3 Orgrimmar bank the best.

September 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Nice to hear that there are recovering addicts out there. If I can tear my brother away from his WoW screen for a second, he'll love to see these cakes.

September 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterSarah H.

One minor correction. The city is Orgrimmar. OK... I'm logging back into World of Warcraft now.

September 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

I can't imagine someone who plays WoW to take time away from WoW to order, photograph, and then eat a WoW cake.

September 6, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterbodoba

Lol Ok, I am definitely a world of warcraft player (and a female, imagine that!) And I know you didn't meant to sterotype but there are so many types of people that play wow, you would be shocked. I do love these cakes very much. But as a proud member of the horde, I must say that the horde aren't the bad guys! There isn't necessarily a good or a bad, depends on which side you play.

Fabulous cakes and I would love to have any of the horde ones. For the Horde!!

P.S. You spelled Orgrimmar wrong :)

September 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterRenee

Nice new website!

I have nothing else to add since I know aprox. ZIP about WoW.

WoW great cakes the man hours involved boggles the mind.

Dragon Con..... let us know how Crow vs Crow goes. the Husband is so jealous that your there and he's not.

September 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterKerrie

Oh man, awesome! I haven't played WoW simply because I do have a tendency to get very, very addicted to video games, and I have two friends whose entire lives have been consumed by this game. Just not risking it--I have a full-time job and a sorta-life.
That being said, I'm totally jealous! It wasn't in the budget to go to Dragon*Con this year, but I've been before. (Also, the Con is getting so much bigger than it used to be, it's as bad as Disneyland--standing in long lines, people walking around in crazy costumes... However, they always have awesome guests and bands! Have fun :)

super awesome new banner! supremely rockin. :)

as for WoW, i will be posting this for all my geekish loves out there - i hear about the game and could find no better way to express excitement than thru cake. that shield is rockin!!

September 6, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterthe flour child

love the new layout!

September 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAllison

How many WoW players does it take to tell you that "Orgrimmar" was spelled wrong????

About 6 million!

September 6, 2009 | Unregistered Commentermiriam

I'm enjoying the new layout, but I believe that in all the excitement a right parenthesis was missed in the first paragraph... on a cake that would be a criticized grammar mistake...

September 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterJustine

Wait, you can come to Atlanta for DragonCon, but not on your book tour?

September 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterCaffeinated Katie

FOR THE HORDE!Ahem, I mean well done. For what it's worth the Horde are not the bad guys. If you read the lore (I am assuming you're interested in WoW enough by your impressive knowledge) you would see that :P My friend had a Horde groom's cake at her wedding and I thought it would be cool to share it here since it goes with the theme:
http://tinyurl.com/mpy2mv

Love the baby carrot jockey layout, this is much more "you" than your last layout. Great job as always!!

September 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterWendy

I am such an avid Mac user, that when I saw the Mc cake my heart skipped a beat and I squealed! "OMG thats a cake!! LOOK at this yall..!!"

AWESOME

September 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterKelli-Sue

Actually, if you read the story line/watch it, the Horde are the good guys and the Alliance are the bad guys. I have to put this across being as I'm FOR THE HORDE and have two level 80 Blood Elf characters, and many many lower level ones.

September 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterColette

Wow, Jen, this new design is great! Sure, I'll really miss the Minima Blue, but this is great. Absolutely, I love it!

And this is a great post!

September 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterErin M

My men folk actually stopped WOW for a moment to come and look at these fabulous cakes! They don't leave WOW for anything!!

September 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterHestias Gem

Beautiful new design and these cakes were awesome! Hell yeah on the carrot jockeys!

I'm so happy for you guys that this has become such a success.

September 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterNatalie

I like that so many people who read this blog are WoW players, and wouldn't you know it, mostly female. I'm an avid [female!] Horde player with an 80 Troll Rogue and while my hesitations before beginning dealt with the whole engulfing-your-life concept, since I'm unemployed and can't find work, what else is there to do with your down time? I can say I successfully balance a very social life that incorporates a boyfriend [who plays] and being out in the world, both with my old college friends and friends in my Warcraft guild since a huge concentration of us are in my city. Not hard to separate fantasy from reality.

On the note of the cakes, just lovely. I really enjoy the shield and Orgrimmar's bank.

The webpage is awesome. Grats on the change-over.

September 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterKasey

Great new design! Love it.

WoW.
Awesome.

September 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterCALpumper aka Crystal

No no no. The Horde is where the grown-ups (and I am using that word loosely given the subject matter) play. Alliance is where the kids play. Very few Alliance cakes since parents probably don't want to reinforce the WoW addiction. (Yes, I am a WoW player. For the Horde!)

September 6, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterkaren

Awesome layout and awesome post.

September 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterL

Love the new design!

September 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterLizz

I DON'T KNOW IF YOU REALIZE BUT YOU SPELLED "ORIGRIMMAR" WRONG.

YOU'RE WELCOME

those are AWESOME! thanks for finding them and sharing =)

"And the Horde aren't evil, although some of the factions within it kind of are. They're definitely not the "bad guys" though."

Came here to post this. Love the bank cake.

September 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterSara

I love your site, I love everything about your site, though I'm a forever lurker in the realms of cakery, mostly because what I see here leaves me speechless everyday..

However, I just wanted to say that I'm a teensy bit offended that you have implied that every single WoW player is some kind of geek or nerd. It's simply not true. In my guild we have everyone from doctors to lawyers, and most things in between.

But the cakes look delicious, and as usual, are beautiful.

September 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Not enough Alliance love here.

FOR THE ALLIANCE! *Divine Storms the entire Horde.*

September 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMiss

You should of posted this a few weeks ago when Blizzcon was going on.

The new site is fabulous!!!

September 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

I'm a WoW geek too (several alts over 4 servers), and I have to point out that the Horde aren't the bad guys unless you're Alliance and vice versa - all the races have very compelling stories. :) Was disappointed that there weren't many Alliance-themed cakes, but the ones you posted were outrageously fantastic. And unlike one poster, I have no intention of being productive today - it's a holiday weekend, and I am lvling my "teen" alts, then will pass the evening in Goldshire, just for a laugh. :D

September 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterWendy

Power to the geeks! That second cake is definitely a paladin (or else a warrior wearing paladin gear). The shield is either the Dragonheart Flameshield http://www.wowhead.com/?item=28611 or the Mazthoril Honor Shield, both of which are used by paladins and not warriors.

Nope, I'm not embarrassed by my geekitude. Not one bit! And I love the new site design too.

September 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMeg Spencer

Those cakes look great, but as a recovering WoW addict - this is NOT what I needed :)

September 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

To all those people that are insistant on correcting your spelling...I'm pretty sure it's spelled...

E.P.C.O.T.

WoW on the cakes. Nice layout. Cheers!

September 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterPersnickety Ticker

OMG!

I was totally going to make an Orgrimmar bank cake for my birthday, but alas, I ran out of time.

I'm just going to steal this photo and *cough* tell people how awesome my birthday cake was. :D

September 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterDorian

Adding one for Alliance adult, non-noob players. I really hate that people get all self-important about the faction they play...

September 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterElanor

OMG my wow guild (Cheese Vendor) is going to love this post --- especailly the woman who is in pastry school! Thank You!

September 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterPickyknitter

Well, at least I now know what the Horde are up to: Baking cakes.

I'll have to remember that the next time I bury an axe in one -- gotta spell the victory cake right now, don't we?

Us Alliance can learn a few things.

*grin*

ADORE the new site, btw.

September 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterJanet

Not one mention of watch the guild? From Dr. Horrible fans? Great sire!

September 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterJanet

Sorry, I'm a former WoW addict, a year and a half clean. I just want to add my 2/5 of a nickel to the Horde vs. Alliance description.
Alliance just tells the Horde, "You kids get offa my damn lawn!" That's how it goes.

September 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterJikuu

As someone who played WoW for a few months, I'm kind of ashamed to say that I recognize every one of those references.
I also noticed the extreme horde bent.

Oh, and both sides are full of noobs, depending on your server. It's just that more people have played the horde ever since they got the pretty elves, and now they're trying to get more people into the alliance by introducing badass werewolves so that the PVP Servers aren't Happy Blood Elf Gankland anymore.

...I apologize for spilling my geek all over this post

September 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterCube

Love the new look!!!

As one of my children told their principal at school "Mom doesn't play WoW, SOMEBODY has to be in charge!!!"

Story of my life! LOL! At least I get to look at cakewrecks!!! Thanks Jen!

September 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterTauna

Great cakes... but mostly I love the shout out to the Whedon geeks.

I love that man and his creative evil genius.

September 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterRebecca

Hi There!
Lovely site, it's a pleasure to visit! My total nerd boyfriend informs me that the pile of boxes with a chest is in fact an Orcish outpost(He even busted out the WoW codex to sort this out!).

September 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterKathleen

Since you mentioned Joss, isn't it about time we saw some "Buffy" cakes? I know they're out there...

September 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterThe Millers

I read Cake Wrecks every day while I do my Argent Tournament dailies. *grin*

(I also run not one, not two, but three separate WoW-related websites. *cough*)

Thank you for sharing the WoW cake love.
