What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Sunday Sweets: WoW

Some of you know that Jen and I are currently geeking out at the biggest geek fest in the south, Dragon*Con. (For the 98.6 percent of you who read this blog but are not, in the strictest sense of the word, "geeks", Dragon*Con is a convention where the majority of the attendees could tell you, without hesitation, the complete works of Joss Whedon and how Jar Jar Binks single-handedly destroyed Lucas' credibility. But, I digress.

This week, we're going to broaden your horizons with something so geeky that even I know nothing about it: World of Warcraft. Apparently, this is a "game" where "players" spend untold thousands of hours walking around and killing things and otherwise forfeiting what was left of their "lives." To do this, I asked Jen's brother Ben, who is himself a recovering WoW addict, to help decipher these cakes. So let's get started, shall we?

(Submitted by Kelly J. and made by Swank Cakes.)

Our first cake is a laptop with a screen-shot of a member of the Horde called the Tauren shaman. We think that the book cake under it says "Shaman for Dummies."

And here's another angle:

"Gold farming" is a term loosely defined as selling imaginary money for real money. Kind of like the stock market, only dominated by Chinese corporations. (Okay, exactly like the stock market.)

(Submitted by Rachel T. and made by Crazy Cakes.)

This next one is actually awesome even if you know nothing about WoW. Since I went through the effort of finding out, however, I might as well share. She is an Alliance Paladin. Or maybe a warrior. Do you feel more educated? Moving on then...

(Submitted by JJ T. and Made by Art Eats Bakery.)

Here we have a bunch of well-made boxes with a chest on top. The only real WoW reference is the red banner with the Horde symbol. I get the impression that everybody who plays WoW is in the Horde (the bad guys) and that the Alliance (the good guys) are all "noobs," or geeks of lesser standing (as determined by those who really are in no position to judge). Got all that?

(Submitted by Tess L. and made by Anne Marie Martino.)

Okay, now we're cooking with gas. This is a shield which has been emblazoned with the symbol for - say it with me - the Horde. Nice woodgraining though.

And finally, we have a cake based on one of the most popular places in the game, the bank in Ogrimmar, the capital city of the Horde.

(Submitted by Jennifer E. and made by Eden Cakes.)

For reference, here's a screen shot of the building in the game:

On a side note, see those itty bitty game people with the colorful words over their heads? Those are your IT guys, your Microsoft employees, and your computer repair people. In short, the folks who keep the internets running and, thusly, control the world. So be nice to them, or someday, when you least expect it, you just might find yourself barred from Facebook. And then what will you do? Call somebody?

A big thanks to Ben, logger of untold hours in Horde-y land, for finally putting all that knowledge to good use.

(Just kidding, Ben! We all know nothing good comes from the Horde.)

I'm insulted that you call Alliance 'noobs'. We're just prettier than Horde, hater!

Okay I know I am a total geek But hubby and I have been playing WOW for over 4 years now and it is nice to see the awesome cakes paying tribute to the Horde (the one true faction!) hehe.
Thanks so much.

For the Alliance! All the cool kids are n'elfs ; )

I'm biased, my main is Alliance but I actually have Horde characters too, I don't really get the faction loyalty. I just really love being a druid and getting to turn into a bird and fly away when I get bored with something.

These cakes are really amazing, I'm quite impressed. And it's not surprising that they are almost exclusively Horde, they do outnumber the Alliance. But we hold our own!

I'm bitter I couldn't go to Dragon*Con this year, I wanted to but I have classes right now that I would have missed. I hope you go and give away carrot jockeys again next year!

September 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterElizabeth

Ha! Persnickety! I was about to do the same thing. Maybe it's not the bank in whatever the city is, maybe it's Spaceship Earth disguised as a bank! :-)

Sigh. Love this site. However, as a non-IT, not really geeky other than being a WoW player wife and mother (whose daughter will probably play with her mama and papa someday), I am disappointed at the stereotyping especially coming from a self-described geek who ought to know that we aren't necessarily our stereotypes. I'm probably being overly sensitive but thought I'd chime in nonetheless.

September 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterLaina

Horde are not the bad guys, they are just trying to survive, where as Alliance are greedy and trying to kill off the Horde. Psh.

Anyway, those cakes are neato.

September 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterKara

Oh, WoW. I have a bit difficult relationship to WoW. They have extreme good conceptarts. But I lost two of my friends to WoW. Or maybe we lost simply common interests, because they play WoW, and I decided not to play WoW.

Anyway. The cakes are really gorgeous. My favourites are the first cake and the bank of Orgrimmar *right?*-cake.

And the new layout is just great!! Go, little Mohwak-Baby-Carrot-Jockeys!!!!

>headdesk<
I love the craftsmanship done on these cakes! I am truly convinced that 75% of the base cause of my divorce is due to WoW. I should have Duff Goldman make me a "divorce cake" of a Dark Elf Horde character pushing off my Ex's character off something... Hmmmmmmm...... But yeah, everything said about WoW is true....

LEEEROYYYYY JENKINSSSSSSSS!!!!!

(Jen, if you're not sure what that's all about, ask your WoW friends, they'll not just tell you, they'll show you...)

September 6, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterjahzcat

I'm a WoW alliance player and am in no way a noob. The different factions are for whatever you prefer.

Thanks for showing us WoW geeks some love though, really.

September 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

LONG LIVE ALLIANCE! this post needs more night elf hunter cakes XD

love the new layout also! especially the jockeys in the corner

Your blog has taken over the minds of me and my friends, we are also spending our weekend at a geeky convention (anime con in portland) and someone had something misspeelled and in "quotes" and we all jsut look at each other saying "I just want to put it on a cake!"

September 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnnie

Sorry to poop in the punch bowl, but I think the new layout looks tacky in comparison with the original. It looks like an ad on a home shopping channel. The "Cake Wrecks" lettering looks more like toothpaste than icing; cursive would have been a better image. The large areas of bold white and orange are garish on a muted ultramarine background. Nonetheless, it remains a fun page.

September 6, 2009 | Unregistered Commentergreygarious

Awesome cakes...I do agree that one is a paladin, as a warrior wouldn't be wearing a graduation cap, that's much too sissy-like...Yeah, it's addictive, but I've quit for like 3 months in a row lately, summer is just too busy for me. When I hole up for our -20 degree weather, I'll start playing again :) For the Alliance!!! Hordies suck :D

~Khalaan lvl 80 gnome mage~

(Hahaha, my "moderation password" is "nomstash"...nom nom cakes! Wow I'm a geek...)

September 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterRayna

Lucas got in to trouble with the Ewoks. JarJar Binks was the jump over the shark. Just sayin'.

Sidenote: www.watchtheguild.com will give you a funny look in to a world kind of like WoW if you aren't in to it. (If you are, it'll be home movies.)

September 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterEm

THose were pretty good cakes especially the one with the Alliance

I have Vista and it worked fine for me

THANKS AMAZING ARIC

Being an avid WoW player I would like to make a correction. Despite the common misconception, Alliance is not just for "noobs". I personally have been playing for many years, and am a part of one of the top ranking Guilds in our server. GO ALLIANCE!
Plus, though I haven't reached there yet (I don't obsess) I hear the game is actually a lot more fun once you hit the top level.
Other than that, great cakes! And I am so jealous of you guys getting to go to Dragon*Con! Blast not having a current income...

September 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

My husband will be totally geeking out over these cakes, but at the same time appalled that the Horde was favored :-P

September 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Orgrimmar is not -the- capital of the Horde, it's just one of the capital cities of the races of the Horde.

Horde are not "bad guys" and Alliance are not "good guys." There is good and evil on both sides.

Great cakes, but I hate when people who don't know anything about the game try to talk about it.

September 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

hehe - i'm glad i'm not the only wowgeek that reads this website. very sweet cakes!

also, the naked baby carrot jockeys make me think they're doing that dance in "Grease" that Danny & Sandy do - the one where they pretend they're swinging a lasso over their heads...

great new site! :)

September 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterKayleen the Violinist

hehe, my hubby and i both play...lol last year i made him a horde cake for his bday. Lol

yep...nerds are pretty awesome when put in a kitchen lol

September 6, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterteenage_houswife

I don't play WoW, but know enough about the game to really appreciate the cakes. Fabulous work on those! WOW indeed!

September 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterPhoenyx

sunday sweets.... FOR THE HORDE!

:D see if you can find some alliance sweets too, we need more red vrs blue

September 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterSillyWalnut

I get the impression that everybody who plays WoW is in the Horde (the bad guys) and that the Alliance (the good guys) are all "noobs," or geeks of lesser standing (as determined by those who really are in no position to judge).

*beckons you over to my Alliance raiding guild*

*bashes in your assorted kneecaps*

Noobs and idiots exist in abundance on both sides the barrier.

September 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMinorAgentofChaos

I really wanted to go to Dragon*Con, but since Anime Weekend Atlanta is in two weeks, I can't attend two conventions so close together. Maybe I'll see you guys at Megacon in Orlando?

Love the WoW cakes, but as several people have pointed out, Alliance vs Horde is not good vs evil. You have both good and evil on each side. I've played both factions, and which is "better" depends on the server.

September 6, 2009 | Unregistered Commentermoonfall86

I SECOND THE BUFFY CAKE REQUEST!

But you probably already knew that, didn't you? :)

Oh, and how about some Firefly/Serenity while you're at it?

September 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterBuffy

We're at DragonCon too! Woo hoo, Jen and Hubby!

September 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterLinda

I'm actually slightly surprised that WoW would be considered by any self-proclaimed geek as being 'extreme' geeky, or 'too geeky for even geeks to know,' since the more common criticism leveled at WoW by the geek community is that it's become too mainstream -- not geeky ENOUGH, since so many non-geeks also play.

And to comment on the cakes itself: They all look delicious except for that second one. Unfortunately, the second one looks like a real laptop, but fake broken glass... so it looks like somebody has been eating a donut all over a laptop keyboard, ugh.

September 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterSophie

lol my s/o plays WoW [he's an addict who keeps falling off the wagon]...I hate the game but I can't wait to show him these cakes. He'll love them. They're amazing.

September 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterKimberly

The first WoW cake was one that I submitted. It was the groom's cake I ordered for my husband at our wedding in June. We were all SO pleased with how it turned out. I was so shocked when I saw it posted today!

As an aside, the yellow and black book does in fact say Shaman for Dummies and the cake served over 50 people. No worries, there was more than enough cake there!

September 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterKelly I.

Awesome! My hubby plays wow (alliance - and def not a noob ;) ) and these cakes will have him amazed!

September 6, 2009 | Unregistered Commenternikki

Like the new site! Have had no problems with loading or access. It looks nicer too with fewer ads and distractions so I get the Wrecks faster.

Love the cakes today, even though I'm not a WoW player. I took one look at the broken screen on the second cake and thought "do you know what all that candy will do to your keyboard???" Then I remembered it was a cake. he he.

September 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterKeeley

These were so great that I had to post for the first time. The smashing-out-of-laptop idea was not only awesome, but the execution was amazing! That shield makes me happy, too.

One thing, though; the Horde are not bad guys! Both Horde and Alliance are flawed protagonists that butt heads while fighting the real bad guys.

September 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterBethany

My daily habit of checking Cake Wrecks and then getting on WoW just got so much sweeter. I think I'll celebrate by using my in-game cooking skill to bake a Delicious Chocolate Cake :]

September 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterDeezilla

Suh-weet new layout!

And I am not just saying this because I'm a 33-year-old mother of four who plays WoW. Although that would be true too.

The husband and I love the Org cake. Zugzug.

September 6, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterbethsix

Ps I also want to see Buffy cakes, either wrecks or Sunday Sweets--how about a cake with Spike on it?

Whew!Is it hot in here?

September 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterKeeley

HAHA. Just last night, my fiancee and I were (half) joking that we should have the topper as our main characters (he's a Tauren, I'm a Troll) in tuxedos.

September 6, 2009 | Unregistered Commenter~ L. K.

Awesome Cakes!!! I so want a WoW cake now!

And just FYI.. Horde are not the bad guys!! The Alliance just want you to believe they are all sunshine and rainbows.

FOR THE HORDE!!!

September 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterDevil Bunnie

Long time reader, first time commenter.

LEEEEROY JENKINNNNNNNS!

September 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAmyranth

I LOVE WoW! Yay to these cakes, i shall show them all to my fellow Horde Buddies!
and shall i say...
for the Horde!

September 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterNéna

So this post slightly irritated me as an avid WoW player...granted the cakes are really awesome.

WoW players get a bad rap from all the extremists out there, and not all Alliance players are bad! I've played Alliance AND Horde, and I've noticed no difference in player caliber.

A nerd is a nerd is a nerd, that's all I gotta say. And I don't mean that in a bad way because I readily admit I am one too.

September 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAlyssa

As other people have said, being a "noob" depends on your faction. And of course, you don't technically have to be a die hard loyal member of one faction or the other.

My former main (for about the last four years) is an Alliance druid. My current main is a Horde Shaman. I have alts on both and <3 both factions. ...Except Gnomes. And Undead. But yeah, other than that, all of them.

September 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterSparky

I love the new layout, especialy the carrot jockeys!

These cakes are great! Speaking as someone whose only WoW exposure is from Foxtrot comics, these cakes opened my mind to a whole new world of geekdom.

Thanks Jen!

September 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterDutchGirl

A lot of people have said it, and I got to say I read the books, I play WoW, have Played Warcraft 3...can't find 1 or 2 ;_; and honestly It shifts back and forth just like in the real world, there's times of Good and evil for both sides, though so far I've racked up more points for the Alliance being jerks then then Horde...so if you really had to align them...I'd say in the majority it's been the Alliance that's been evil...however neither side is inherently evil...The Legion is evil and they are demons XD

September 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

For the Horde!

September 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAndrea

wow is evil!!
if only because my boyfriend would rather play it than snuggle on the couch and watch a movie with me.
other than that i have no issues with the game.
oh one thing i noticed
noob means a person who is new to the game and does not know what they are doing.
you may thank my boyfriend for that one.
and i love the new look!!
naked baby carrot jockys!!

September 6, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterloraven

My "better than just an IT tech" boyfriend for a big company will disagree about that Horde business. He's Alliance all the way with his level 80 Mage human and Paladin elf.
I will agree that he has spent far too many hours mining and whatever boring crap you have to do to earn money and stuff.

These cakes are awesome, will have to show him.

September 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterZombie Edward

Is anybody else having a pot-kettle reaction to this entry? I normally find the self-depricating geek humor pretty entertaining, but a self-proclaimed Trekky ragging on WoW fans? That just seems a little hypocritical to me!

September 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Fabulous cakes, insulting stereotypes. I'm 23, thin, female, in a happy long-term relationship, and have a healthy social life. I also play WoW. For a self-proclaimed "geek" to act insultings towards other "geek" hobbies doesn't seem quite right.

September 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterKenzie

WOO! For the Horde! :D And all the nerds that make the game awesome XD

While these cakes are gorgeous, WoW is awful. My husband is/was addicted to this game and just quit a few weeks ago. It is wonderful having him back - not showing him these cakes though!! :)
