What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Wrecky Replay: Halloween "Huh?"s

For today's cakes I have no answers. Only questions.

Uh, what's up with her nose? (Or should I say "down with her nose?")

I like to think it's just a wart, but I get the feeling that it's...not.

Why is the toilet paper angry?

What do colorful sperm have to do with Halloween?
(Granted, "Happy" I could see...)

WHAT in the name of sweet Lassie is that spider doing?!?

I have two questions for Mr. Ghost-with-the-Most here:
First, why did the Wreckerator feel it necessary to include two small chocolate bars and a gummi worm? And second, why, oh why, did s/he put them there and in that order?

Now, I don't want to leave you with all questions, my dear Wreckies, so here's a cake that answers the following:

Q) What do you get if you cross Princess Leia, Dracula, and the Bride of Frankenstein?

A) This:

Paige, Carey H., H.M., Erin, Suzanne U., & Daa, you must admit the resemblance is uncanny.

I love the last one even if it is ccc. Not sure about the rest especially the "not" one.

October 26, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMargaret

Is that a fraggle in the last one?

October 26, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMatt

Maybe that's not the witch's nose, but her chin. The photo is taken at a weird angle so it's hard to tell.

October 26, 2011 | Unregistered Commentertheminx

I'm sure you have posted this before.....

[Editor's note- Yup. We're on tour right now so we decided that Wednesdays would have an old, old rerun to give us a bit of time to recover. We're doing a tour roundup later on today that Jen put together and that's all new. We have four more weeks of 6 hour drives and then we'll be back to our normal posting schedule. Thanks for understanding. -john]

For a CCC (patootie!), that last one is kind of cute actually. Totally a wreck because of the CCC (hack!) factor, but it's a cute wreck. Pardon me, I have to go wash the extra frosting off from the CCC (ewwww!)

October 26, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterFlicka

Wow that witch has a wart on her wart! At least that's my story and I'm sticking to it! The Angry Toilet Paper one totally made me chuckle but I saw it as an angry upside-down marshmellow with bad hair. Silly me! :) I choose not to ponder what that spider is doing to that poor dog but rather allow myself to be consumed by the fact that the dog doesn't below there in the first place! Perhaps the wreckorator didn't have time to actually make a whole new cake for the spider to live on so he/she just took one that had obviously been sitting around for a while. I shudder at the thought process....

October 26, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterGrnEyes6

Yes, why IS the toilet paper so angry?

October 26, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterGary

The last cake looks more like a vampire Yoda bride of Frankenstein to me.

October 26, 2011 | Unregistered Commentermrsblocko

I think the Wolfman got in on the action somewhere along the line for that last wreck. ;-)

October 26, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJasry

I personally love Dracleiastein. Kinda cute, even if poorly executed.
Exe-CUTEd? Meh. Never mind.

October 26, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMelonie

The toilet paper is angry because he knows he's either going to end up draped across a tree or on a wild ride to the sewage treatment plant.

October 26, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterSharyn

Great idea to post some of your best entries on Wednesdays to take some of the pressure off during the tour! I hope you two are having an AWESOME time. So bummed I won't get to see you as we're criss-crossing TX all at the wrong times.

[Editor's note- We're going to three Texas stops. 3!!! And you can't get to even one of them?!?! WE BELIEVE IN YOU! You can make it!!! All it takes is some determination and, ya know, a car...

So what time should we expect you? :) -john]

It was great meeting you guys last night.
The new book is even funnier than the last one: I almost hurt myself reading it, although I did not pass out. Good luck with the rest of the tour!
If I were toilet paper, I'd be angry too.

October 26, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterSuBee

WTF I have no clue what they were thinking with these D:

October 26, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMINDY1

"Why is the toiletpaper angry?" made me laugh so much!!! : )

October 26, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterChris

Although I will not get to see you on the tour (because I live in the Pacific Northwest), I did get to read your new book last night, and it was truly worth the wait. I loved all the geeky references (which I got--I'm still not sure if this is a good or a worrying thing) but my favorite part, hands down, was the section titled "It's All Relative". You have to love those families. Though I do wonder what their therapy bills were...

October 26, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterSaraCVT

the third one should say "Happy Halloweenie!"

Melonie, "executed" was funny!

October 26, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterBarbara Anne

Hi guys!

Had a great time last night and had fun meeting SuBee and others! Maybe the toliet paper was having a crappy day?

I will wear my carrot jockey necklace with pride!

#1 I'm just glad that people are finding ways to reuse things like the heart pan. It's

"Why is the toilet paper angry?" sounds like the setup for a joke. Too bad I don't know what the punchline is. That cake is charmin, though. It probably came from a Northern bakery.

#3 Nah, they're tadpoles. Once you manage to see it that way, it more sense than the other theory.

#4 Every pet-owning household should have a veterinary spider. I could ask what is surrounding the dog, but I'm sure I don't want to know.

#5 Maybe they wanted to see if anyone was paying attention. Or if anyone could get past seven pounds of frosting for seven cupcakes (from the musical of the same name).

#6 The CCC-dar is sounding an insistent warning, and yet... Satellite cupcakes: ok. High flotsam factor, but they're safely separated and can't form a critical mass. Now the main 'body' of this thing appears to be a normal cake, thus my consternation. Also, the frosting-to-cake ratio seems to be a bit lower than infinity -- not usually seen in your typical CCC.

On the macro level, Scooby-Doo seems to have crept into the genome.

October 26, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterCraig

Love the 'snot joke; always welcome!

Why is the toilet paper angry: you'd be angry too if you spent your entire life around ...(rare moment of self-control)...butts...

The sperm-covered cookie is a birth control weather report: it actually says Kappy Halloween, and is a reminder that if the Halloween forecast calls for raining sperm, your costume should include a "raincoat."

Dog and spider: ask your Mom....

The ghost is actually a warning: if you are looking for Mr. Goodbar, be careful because he'll worm his way into your life, but you won't hear wedding bells, just the "krackel" of your throat.....

That last one: what you said...and I sure hope they make that into a movie...!

October 26, 2011 | Unregistered Commentermel

The Angry Toilet Paper is one of my favorite wrecks! So nice to see him again...on the computer that is. If I saw him in my bathroom I would bravely run away.

October 26, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterCarrieG

6 days left! Getting so excited!
Wednesday reruns are an excellent idea. We don't want you to burn out or get sick or something! So, here's my "song" in support of your decision. (Think "Circle of Life")

From the day that I first found this website
And found Jen to be queen of the pun
I have laughed ‘til I cried, I’ve been splitting my sides,
I’ve learned king cakes are not deep-fried buns.

There are so many wrecks to take in here,
Classic movie quotes to be found,
I can easily read a post I’ve read before
And still laugh at an icing poo-mound.

It’s the circle of Wrecks…

October 26, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterzoomom

Wrecks are always worth revisting! Enjoy your road trip and I'll see ya'll on the 15th!!

Woot! Woot!

BTW - I'm more concerned with the witch's hair - what was that made with?! Truly scary!!

October 26, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterlisadh524

Honestly, I think the last one is just Rowlf the Dog from the Muppets wearing his vampire fangs for Halloween. If that's what it is, it's not half bad. It's not half good, but it's not half bad.

I think the toilet paper is angry only because, clearly, the cat got to him again. Just look at those edges!

October 26, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterIsabella

". . . and you know they're really witches when their noses meet their chins."

October 26, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterracheld

What is it about that heart shaped pan for the Valentines day cakes that makes them want to use it for somethng else? It seems to be a recurring theme.

and great show last night in (West) Hartford!

October 26, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterDr Phun

Let me start by saying that I have a lot of 'stuff' going on in my life that is not fun. My Dad passed away in May after being ill for a long time and my husband is on disability this year taking a year of meds fighting a disease as well.

With that said, I cherish laughter. I seek things and people who offer a positive influence in my live and really try hard to deeply laugh every single day. Well - your web site has fulfilled that desire on several occasions and in the case of the Bully Sperm.. OM Gosh - I laughed over that one for about 3 days!!!

Thank you so very much!

October 26, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJulie Size

I thought the witch cake was the weakest of the entries but worth it for the "it's...not" joke.

I'm pretty sure the dog is dead, so you can add necrophilia to the spider's offenses.

October 26, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterGeorge P

Guys, that last one's obviously a werewolf.

I mean, really guys...

October 26, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterBea

Fun seeing y'all in Hartford! My girls just devoured the book this morning.... lots of laughs and lots of "EW" yelled.

October 26, 2011 | Unregistered Commentermeep

The toilet paper isn't ANGRY....he's just MISUNDERSTOOD....

October 26, 2011 | Unregistered Commentermiss_paper

Most of those look like they might belong in an old school Legend of Zelda game. The last one looks like the last form of the nightmare in the game Link's Awakening.

Maybe you could feel better cutting into them pretending you are Link.

October 26, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterIsolder74

If you had to deal with all of the crap that the toilet paper puts up with, you'd be p***ed, too. (Feel free to redact that, John, if you deem it necessary.)

Even that last ghost realizes that he's been wrecked. Just look at that abashed look on his face.

October 26, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMelindaB

The first thing I thought was the witch had a runny nose..big snot bubble...ewwww

October 26, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterPhoebe Muse

I love angry toilet paper man!

And come on, aren't the little swimmers allowed to celebrate Halloween by dressing up? I mean how many costumes are available in his size, it's easier to jump into food colouring, am I wrong?

And I think that the new book is the pinnacle of awesomeness vs wreckiness!

October 26, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterLaury

I was wondering why these looked familiar.

Only when I searched the page for the word "replay" to see if I'm not the only one having a deja vu (I searched for that first) I realized that it was in the actual title. Serves me right.

But it only goes to show that I've been reading this site way too long.

October 26, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterSkeptic

This disturbing display of confectionary confusion had me laughing so hard I smacked my hand on the table, send the mouse flying, and I think I gave myself a goose egg on the 'ol noggin while under the table trying to retrieve said mouse.
*applying ice pack to back of head*
The angry toilet paper man isn't angry at everyone, it's just a result of his occupation...I think anyone would be angry if they were treated the way he was on a daily basis...

October 26, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAmber

Lol I loved that last cake. Poor Leia she is now the bride of Frankenstein. Ah well. At least she doesn't look like she has a giant booger hanging out her nose like the witch does. And if I were toilet paper I would be pretty angry too lol.

October 27, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterArlene

It's not a toilet paper guy, it's a punk rock marshmellow! :D

October 27, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAddy DelaMorte

Is the first one maybe Squidward as a witch? My first thought was Squidward nose...

October 27, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMary Anne

When I saw the angry toilet paper, I instantly wanted him on a t-shirt!

October 28, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterRose

The traveller has come! Choose and perish!

October 28, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterSarah

The last one looks more like a deranged Rowlf the dog, from Muppet Babies.

October 28, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterlnpresnell

I'm pretty sure there's a bit of Kate Monster from Avenue Q in that last one, as well.

October 29, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterdsbs

That toilet paper ghost looks a LOT like Dr. Cube if you ask me.
