What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Thanks to Myriah L. for showing us that Betty Boop really does defy the laws of physics.

And it's a cupcake "cake", OF COURSE.

The laws of physics?
Don't you mean the laws of physiology?

October 4, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterGary

The expression on her face does not suggest "happiness" or "celebration".

October 4, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterSolitary Diner

She looks darned uncomfortable. The anatomy of the whole thing is mind-boggling! No wonder the poor girl has such a pained expression.

October 4, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterLady Anne

She's just disturbed that someone made her leg bend like that. I'd have that look on my face, too if someone did that to me!

October 4, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterShonna

Betty Boop in Guernica.

October 4, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterchristine

Betty's trying too hard these days.

October 4, 2011 | Unregistered Commentershaftomatic

Betty has drug problem and is on her last leg!

October 4, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterTeresa

That bent leg scares me, it looks all wobbly and bendy. I'm pretty sure those legs wouldn't hold her up if she tried to stand! They'd just kinda of collapse and fold up underneath her.

October 4, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterChristyC

What the heck?

October 4, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterScorp

I like the long, skinny arm that ends in a hoof.

Betty meets Gumby.....

What? I love Picasso in his elementary school years!

October 4, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterLara

I have no words.

October 4, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterFluffy Cow

lol! i needed a good laugh today.. do you realise that if she extended the legs, one would be waay longer?

October 4, 2011 | Unregistered Commentertiny p elephant

She looks embarassed.

October 4, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMani

Faker! That's Betty, Jr, the offspring of Betty Boop and Strech Armstrong. Yech.

October 4, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterBarbara Anne

I showed Betty to my Hubby and he looked at it sideways and said "there's something not right...." At which point I rolled off the couch laughing, because there is SO MUCH not right about this CCC.

October 4, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJenn (not that Jenn)

This is the first post where I'm not entirely certain what you're referring to. Which leg did you mean? I doubt you'd find either of those specimens in nature--that left arm is a one-of-a-kind, too. As another poster said, no wonder the poor girl has a strained expression--do you think she knows she's not completely human?

On the one hand I saw 'Concept' and on the other, 'Execution'. Between them was fixed a great gulf that no wreckerator could cross. Remonstration 3:1

And I did cry out, saying, "How long must we be vexed with the deceitful cupcakes that have the appearance of a cake, which sucks mightily?" And the voice answered, "Do not despair, for I have heard your comments. I have raised up people among you, and have given them power to show forth the cakes and hold them up to ridicule and derision. By your sense of humor shall you all overcome the cupcakes."
I Confections 3:1-4

Reminds me of one of our favorite phrases from the Museum of Bad Art (book, also website):

...careful disregard for details of the human form...

Just - ouch.

October 4, 2011 | Unregistered Commentermichelej

I believe that was the centerpiece at the Osteoporosis Convention this year.

P.S.: Craig -- Amen, brother!

October 4, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterSharyn

Er....the hair's not too bad?

October 4, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAllie

I think she's very unhappy being on a CCC. Which is why she is kicking so high to make the cupcakes disappear!

October 5, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterArlene

Betty OOPS!

October 5, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJeepchic20

I'm fixating on the suggestiveness of that dress. Combined that, um, odd shape with those legs and, well, I think the children should be sent out of the room. The facial expression seems to say less "I'm in pain" and more "Is it over yet?"

And where is that right arm? And what is it doing? And what is she looking at? And do I really want to know those answers?

October 5, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterBerk

I don't think that's what people are talking about when they say she "defy's the laws of gravity".

October 5, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterSarah

I... I'm not sure whether this is an awful Betty Boop, or the genesis of some truly horrific pin-up style tattoos soon to be applied by someone who has watched a couple of episodes of Miami Ink and needs some cash, and applied TO someone who has watched a couple of episodes of Miami ink but doesn't have alot of spare cash...

October 5, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterIndignant Rant

She looks more like Olive Oil to me!

October 5, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterShan

Whoever made this has never seen a real woman, naked or otherwise. I didn't know mole rats could work in the "pastry" industry.

October 5, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterFlartus

Betty Boop as a CCC? No, just no.

October 5, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterThe Black Dog

Looks like some of the bad Photoshops out there!

October 5, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterCaren

She defies the laws of anatomy too! She's super talented!

October 5, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterTrevor

the cake is terrible but, honestly, the 'sweet lord in heaven' had me falling out of my chair! Thank you for the laugh!

October 5, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterBreedeeteedee

Craig, I hear the word and the word is "sweeeet" Amen!

October 5, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterPeg D

This "creation" is by a baker in my area, it's featured on her website no less as an example of her skills. Not only that but it's labled as "90 person Betty Boop". I've tried counting them and there's no way there's 90 cupcakes in that. Or maybe she means '90" as in "this is what a 90 year old Betty Boop would look like".

October 5, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAnnette

Fair point, Annette. By my counting estimate, BettyGumby comprises about 60, maybe 65 cupcakes.

The math leaves two possible solutions.

One answer relies on division: the baker thinks that each guest would eat 2/3 of a cupcake.

The more likely option, however, relies instead on subtraction. The baker knows that when she presents the cake, at least 1/3 of the guests will leave so they can vomit in privacy. QED.

And on top of everything else, she's completely covered in chenille.

My grandmother was a great fan of Betty Boop. If she'd lived to see this... perhaps it's better this way.

October 5, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterNaomi

I couldn't figure out why BettyGumby was surrounded by a mystical white aura until I took a closer look and realized it was a CCC. Agh!

@Annette: I'm pretty sure I wouldn't admit to living in the same city as the baker, and

@Christian: so funny!

October 5, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterLaura

Bless you Craig, for he that knoweth the Word of Truth shall enter the bakery of Heaven. On the other hand, that's the spittin' image of my 2009 supervisor Betty Floop, oh! how I wish we'd had that CCC for her 'retirement' party.

October 5, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterRev W

My 20-month-old looked at this and said "Baby! Funny!"

October 5, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMuriah

It could just be me, but isn't the "boop" in the wrong area? She's supposed to have big boops, not a big booty!

October 5, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterLisa P.

That facial expression says "sex trafficked"!

October 6, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterDeepBlue

Hey, I've discovered a fun game. Go to the website:!photos home of the 90 person Betty Boop and see if you can guess which cakes were definitely made by the creator of 90 person Betty Boop alias BettyGumby and which ones MAYBE, possibly not so much.

October 7, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterSiouxzr

I just got out of the hospital and my art teacher sister made me a Betty Boop card for the adventure. Well, it had six fingers on one hand. See you in Charlotte on Thursday.
