My Other Blog

What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Five Years, Baby!!

Remember this?

And these?

How about this one?

Or this story?

Five years ago today I started a goofy little cake blog, just for fun. I never intended for anyone other than a few close friends to read it, and I was terrified the first time a stranger found it and commented.

Within two months, though, my goofy little cake blog went viral, garnering about 50,000 visitors in a single day.

It's been a wild ride since then. I realized my life-long dream of becoming a published author not once, but twice, and Cake Wrecks even landed on the New York Times Best Sellers List. John and I got to travel across the U.S. and Canada meeting thousands of you readers, sampling dozens of your bakeries, and only almost-dying that one time.

I was invited on more TV shows than I can remember, including David Letterman, Rachael Ray, and I think even Martha Stewart - and one of my proudest achievements in life is that I turned them all down. I've also turned away TV producers, web content "gurus," and website conglomerates offering a pretty penny to purchase Cake Wrecks and turn it into something else - something less personal, something not ours.

Cake Wrecks has been a labor of love from the beginning, and I've fought - and will fight - to always keep it that way. It's not a vehicle to make me famous, or a stepping stone to get me to where I *really* want to be in my career, because I'm already here. True, it has become my job - John's, too -  and like every job it causes heartache and frustration and burnout sometimes. But at the end of the day, I get to check my e-mail, find a cake that makes me giggle, and share it with all of you. That's pretty frickin' awesome.

Five years ago I never would have dreamed my goofy little cake blog would last this long, or that it would amass such a devoted readership. I mean, this blog was supposed to fizzle out four and a half years ago, and yet here you all are! I always told John I'd quit when the readers left, but it turns out you guys are more stubbornly loyal than I anticipated. Curse you.

So here's to us, my dear wreckies, five years, 1,800+ posts, and roughly 8,000 cakes later.

And if all that doesn't deserve cake, then I don't know what does.

So here's Brent Spiner trying on a Carrot Jockey necklace:

Let's be honest: it was all downhill from here. :D

Oh, and I have to give a million thanks to John for getting me through these past five years - and also for not dying that one time - as well as to Lindsey, who writes more than half of our Sweets posts these days, and to Sharyn, who helps me write to the wrecks. You guys are awesome, and get a lifetime pass for extra sprinkles.

Congratulations on five years!!! My dear friend got me onto this crazy little blog and from here I made the super easy transition to Epbot! Congrats!!!!

My daughter showed me your site a LONG time ago, back when it was easy to catch up with what I'd missed. Now, I give your books as gifts and my friends are telling me they are introducing others to the wreckiness. Thanks for the snarky commentary and the beauty on Sundays. My day isn't complete without a wreck.

Happy Anniversary and best wishes from Alaska!

"I was invited on more TV shows than I can remember, including David Letterman, Rachael Ray, and I think even Martha Stewart - and one of my proudest achievements in life is that I turned them all down."

Wow! Congrats on not caving to the pressure and on keeping your blog pure. You and John have a unique thing going here, and that's what keeps us all coming back. Unspoiled by crass commercialism...yeah!

Probably best to celebrate with ice cream, though, instead of a cake, eh?

Happy 5 years Jen & John! I love reading your blog every day! :) Because of you two I always look at professional cakes a little differently. I used to decorate cakes and I always looked at them with a critical eye wondering if I could have done it better. Now I look at them to see if I can take a picture and send it to you! :) hahahaha! I love that!

I hope you have at least 5 more years in you because I love coming here and connecting with you guys each and every day!

Much love!

Thank you for five years of the funniest cakes out there.

Congratulations Jen, John, and the rest of the Cake Wrecks crew! Cake Wrecks is the reason I started surfing blogs (you could call it a gateway blog). But you also gave me the courage to start my own blog, and I love that I now have my own forum where I can share. I never even cared if anyone read it, I just did it for me. And while I don't have the readership you have, I'm still at it 4 years later, teaching and ranting and talking to myself and the readers that stop by. I can't wait to see what the next 5 years holds for you guys! Thanks for keeping Cake Wrecks real - really (nicely) snarky and written by really great people!

@Slivie -- I'm with you
Jen and John and crew: WE LOVE YOU!! We really do!
Keep on wreckin'!

wow really! Happy 5th Anniversary : ) Thanks for so many mornings of laughing till tears rolled down my cheeks, for mornings where I was laughing so hard I couldn't talk and all the kids would come see what was up. Thanks for the book tour where for just a few moments I got to meet and talk with you and John ( hubby of Jen ). Thanks for inspiring me to do some really neat crafty things and introducing me to the steampunk fashion/ world.

Yay CakeWrecks and Yay Jen and John for sticking in there during the rough times.

Congratulations on 5 years! Thank you so much for sticking with us all this time. You've gotten me through some pretty bad days and have made me spit coffee on more computers than I care to count.

Keep up the amazing work!!!

I've been reading the Cake Wrecks blog so long that I don't even remember how I came across it! Thanks for making us laugh (and sometimes cringe) every day. One of my bucket list goals is to come across a wreck & send it in.

May 20, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSM3

I've been reading Cake Wrecks for several years, and although I recently cut down drastically on the number of blogs I read, I will NEVER stop reading Cake Wrecks as long as you are here writing these posts! You (and all your fabulous commenters) make me laugh every single day.

Congrats Jen and John, your silly little blog has brought smiles to my face on days when I needed it most. Thanks so much for taking the time to write these posts!

All I can say is: THANK YOU. We love your site and check it every day.
Your blog is consistently the funniest thing I read every day--and even more, it's clever without being snarky. Can't tell you how much I appreciate that.
And I admire you guys, too--you stayed true to yourself through it all. I hope you enjoy doing CW for many more years so that we can enjoy it, too.
Love you guys!

Happy 5 years! Woo hoo! I'm going to bake you a cake. And then I'm going to eat it. Because by the time it gets to you, it will probably be all gross, and who wants that? You're welcome. :)

(and thank you for showing up to give me the giggles every day, from one of your very loyal readers)

Happy 5th Anniversary, Cake Wrecks, and kudos to Jen and john (thoj)! It would be impossible to say how much I love Cake Wrecks, and how much I appreciate not only the clever, creative, funny posts you give us day after day, but also the fact that you allow us Wreckies to play on your site, making our own comments. You have created something much, much more than a blog – you have created a community. Populated by some who live here, some who stay for a while and then leave, and some who are just passing through, it is, nevertheless a real community of people who share the desire – maybe really the need – for daily laughter brought on by the caliber of humorous writing that seems lost to the rest of the world. And it is a community that encourages and supports one another, whether with an acknowledgement of a funny post or a virtual hug for someone in sorrow.
Looking back on my own relationship with Cake Wrecks, two events stand out. Certainly the highlight was having the opportunity to meet Jen and john (thoj) at the Chicagoish stop of their “Winter Underlined” Tour. The first thought I had when I met them was, “These people are so young!” Given the sophisticated level of their humor and the consistently clever wordplay, I thought surely they had to be much older to have developed that much skill. Nope. They’re just brilliant young people, gifted with a sense of humor second to none. In a standing room only crowd, we laughed, and laughed, then laughed some more, and then ate cake. What a day!
The second event came a few months later, 1-17-12, when Jen wrote that she had been thinking of ending Cake Wrecks. It was a thought too horrible to imagine. Like many of us, I just assumed Cake Wrecks would go on forever…I mean, it had to – we needed it – it was as much a part of our lives as breathing…. It did not end, and for that I am eternally grateful.
And, I am glad that Sharyn has been added to the team –she is incredibly talented and funny…day after day after day... a perfect fit.
So Happy Anniversary!! If I may repeat a previous comment – for I mean it every day – Thank you for all you have done, thank you for all you do to bring us a daily dose of laugh-out-loud-coffee came through my nose-now I’ve got to clean the keyboard-humor. And thank you for letting us play in your playground.
Thank you, thank you, thank you!
And, may there be many, many more anniversaries to come!

May 20, 2013 | Unregistered Commentermel

HAPPY BIRTHDAY CAKE WRECKS!!! Jen, you know you'll never get rid of us, right? We're crazy stubborn like that. :)

Thanks for all the fun you make
Of the world's most awful cake.
Of the big gaffe and mistake
On birthday and wedding cake.
So please keep writing without break
So we can laugh at messed up cake.

Congratulations on your five year anniversary.

Thanks very much for your hard work everyday. Your blog is a bright spot every morning!

May 20, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterLori

It feels strange to get teary over a blog run by someone I have never met, but I feel like I know you. You have made me laugh with your presentation of the wrecks, and cry over some personal things you have shared, knowing that I am not alone. Over the past 5 or so years, I have seen more than one blog I follow be "sold out" to a certain conglomerate, and it changed it immensely. Another one completely flopped, after being a pretty decent, self-sustaining blog. I respect you even more for not selling out, and being true to yourself and your blog.

Something you might appreciate: I have a friend who has a little cake and cookie side-business. She is not computer savvy at all and needed my help for some basic things. While I was working on her computer, I arranged it so that Cake Wrecks comes up whenever she opens Chrome! Mwahahahaahaaaa!

Love to you Jen, firm handshake to John, and congrats on 5 very interesting years!

Happy anniversary guys! I don't get on here as much anymore unfortunately because the pics sometimes trigger my disordered eating (you would think it would do the opposite, no?). But this site brought me to Epbot. Which introduced us to Steampunk and Cosplay/Cons, which in turn has enriched mine and my family's life more than you can possibly imagine.

Keep on wrecking! You guys rock.

We love you Cake Wrecks
Oh yes we do
All that frosting
Mispelings too
You make us laugh and snort
It's true
Oh Cake Wrecks
We love you!
(Apologies to the songwriters from Bye Bye Birdie)

I remember being in a Barnes and Noble store about four years ago to check out the Humor section, and found Cake Wrecls. I read it all, laughing out loud, and bought the book. When I got home (no smart phone then) I looked up the blog and have been a Cake Wrecks groupie ever since. You make Sundays sweeter and brighten the rest of the week. Thank you Jen and John (and Sharyn and the rest of your collaborators---or co-conspirators) for what you do. Congradullashunz for five years and here's to many more years of laughs and fun

Congratulations for reaching 5 years!! I've been a loyal follower for about 4 1/2 years. You guys make my day! I really appreciate all your hard work and endurance. Kudos also to Lindsey and Sharyn for their wonderful contributions. I also love to read the comments and have learned (with an uncanny ability that I didn't know I possessed) to sense an Epcot in the making! I always enjoy comments from Haiku Joy, SuBee, Mel, Mindy, KarateLady, and many others too numerous to mention. Thank you all for making this a hilarious and necessary part of my morning routine!!

Oh, man, you had Brent Spiner touch one of your necklaces. I would enshrine that immediately!

Thank you for being here to make his smile, gag, choke and spit beverages onto our keyboards and monitors. I wonder how many computer peripherals have given their lives for this blog?

You have opened our horizons to a whole new level of weirdness -- which is NOT any easy thing to do in my house. You've also added a new level of paranoia to ordering cakes. I have to order my son's graduation cake this week. I am officially terrified!

Bravo, Jen and John. And Sharyn and Lindsey. Thank you for sharing your talents with us!

Has it really been five years? I'm not sure when I started reading it, but I know it was in the early days (I didn't have to scroll back through hundreds of entries to make sure I'd read every single one - though I would have if I'd had to!!) - how time flies! Thank you - I look forward to the next five years!

You are singlehandedly (multihandidly?) responsible for my being an amateur cake decorator. Upon finding your blog I said to myself "I can do better than that!". And I have....except for that one time... anywho! Thanks for the laughs and the inspiration.

I feel so special having been one of the early readers. What a treat to meet the two of you in person during your non-lethal Texas tour! Thank you for pouring your heart, soul, possibly blood, definitely sweat, and absolutely tears into this continually hilarious, sometimes poignant, often mystifying (daisy! King Cake! EPCOT!), completely awesome safe place - and wow, wow, wow - EPBOT, too! You all make my day every day. Congratulations!
