What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Finally, a Baker Who Gives a Crap

Balloons: 0

Crap: 1

Thanks to Uri S., who thinks a rose by any other name... still doesn't look like a balloon.

UPDATE: My, my, so many negative Nancies in the comments! After all we've been through, you guys still think I'd put up an intentional wreck? I'm hurt. Truly.*

*Not truly

Anyhoo, for all of you crying "staged!" here's what happened, according to Uri:

"After a lengthy attempt of explanation as to what I wanted on the cake ('just happy birthday with maybe some balloons or something birthday-ee like that') and the woman (who spoke very poor English) behind the counter not understanding- I finally just typed out on my phone what I wanted and handed it to her. This was the result. I was crying I was laughing so hard."

You know, "completely fondant free" is the same as "fondant free."

Well a cake with dead looking rose like things on it plus that writing how could it not fail at a party? Lol I would be laughing too hard to buy the thing though so I hope they didn't pay for it. Love the sprinkles can I get more? :D

Uri is lucky he didn't get a cake with his phone embedded in the frosting.

OK so the woman ordering this cake knew the counter lady couldn't understand HEARING English but why would she think her reading comprehension would be so much better? Either way, the cake is funny!

I wish we could "like" comments on the blog like you can on Facebook. I love how "Fluffy Cow" brought attention to the sprinkles. ;-)

There's no way I would think this was staged. Anyone that has EVER had to deal with other people knows that there is always a potential for catastrophic misunderstanding - either through miscommunication or pure stupidity.

The pound cake (3rd one down) looks radioactive. The glowing green is a little scary!

When I worked with cakes, I would have people come in and ask for goofy things, To be done to their cakes(Misspelling, dumb pictures drawn on,colors ect ect). I would never do it since it was a professional shop, But always wondered if they were doing it to put it in this site!So some might be fake but still very funny!

I think that "Balloons and Crap Like That" would make a great band banned book title.

December 13, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJoel Polowin

Nope, sorry. Especially after than explanation there's no way that was an accident.

I think you've found your next book cover! A book of birthday themed wreckies would be awesome.

That is so hilarious! I would totally take that one home for my husband - he would get such a kick out of it! In fact... his birthday is coming up... hmmmm....

I am a cake decorator in a grocery store. You wouldn't believe how many times I have seen and ex-coworker do stuff like this. I don't get how a professional cake decorator could do something so stupid!

Customer: Ya I wanna cake...
Clerk: ya, what do you want on it
Customer: Oh you know Happy Birthday, with balloons and crap like that on it!!
Clerk: Alright whatever you say!

The guy must have had a rotten day and dislikes people who call his artwork "crap".

I would love to get this cake! My birthday just passed, and I did NOT have balloons and crap like that on it. I just found my new birthday greeting for all my loved ones!

March 7, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterDev

If I were to order a cake from a bakery it might end up just like that. That is how I would phrase it!

April 25, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterNickol

Because the guy went in and said to the Asian baker, Just put Happy birthday with balloons and crap like that on it.

I would have to buy this cake no matter what, I would not be able to keep the laughter and joy of it away from my family and friends, especially at a birthday party, we would all be laughing till we wet our pants! Who cares real or not it is funny! I love it! Maybe lighten up a bit people! Enjoy even God has a sence of humor!

I would like to say first, I do really enjoy seeing the cakes, they make me laugh (sometimes, and sometimes they just make me wonder why people don't have any sense). I do have to say though, that many of the horrible cakes here could be a result of the bride choosing a fondant cake picture then demanding there be no fondant on it because they don't like fondant. Still, in this case, the baker/ decorator needs to be certain to make it clear that the cake picture in fondant is not what the same cake in buttercream only will look like. I personally refuse to do a cake for a bride if I know it will look very different from her picture because she chooses a fondant picture and insists there be no fondant on it. Also, some of these decorators have extremely poor buttercream piping skills (I am guessing they are new to the business because buttercream piping is really "old school"). Lastly, there was one fondant cake that was decorated with blue, and that person needs to go back to cake school because that fondant work is absolutely not acceptable!

I can honestly say, I have laughed, I have cried, and I have ran in terror at the cakes that lurk in the nether. May we never be forced to witness them in person, and may those who have, be mercifully subjected to a MIB Neuralyzer.

You know, I would LOVE to get this one on my birthday. Seriously. Thanks for the grins. :-)

June 16, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJanice

Ohhh, I am seriously in pain from laughing! What idiot would write that on an order? Where do these bakeries get their employees?
