What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

The Wrecky Infamy is Spreading

Here's a report sent in from the front lines by brave Wreckporter Mrs. Tantrum:

"I wanted to let you know that I attempted this morning to discreetly take a photo of a spider cupcake wreck at my local [name removed to prevent possible lynching] store with my phone. Apparently the bakery manager and store manager are on to the Cake Wreck Blog, because I was shouted at by both of them "NO PHOTOGRAPHING OF THE CAKES!" I told them I was sending the photo to my husband to see if it was the one he wanted for the party today, they replied "No you aren't, you're going to send it to that cake wreck blog like everyone else."

YES!! The power! The absolute power! The universe is mine to command, to CONTROOOL!!

[picking self off floor] Whoops - sorry 'bout that, Mrs. Tantrum; just took a little power trip there.

SO... anybody else get the spider-wreck photo? :)

This is making me want to go to the grocery store right now and search for wrecks! I always kind of hurry past the bakery section because I have a three year old and the last thing I need is a three year old screaming for a wrecky cupcake, but he is at preschool right now, so I could run out and see if there are any wrecks at my store right now...I always have my digital camera in my purse for just such an occasion...I'm dying to see the spider wreck!

THAT IS AMAZING.

(And I, too, caught the Aladdin reference. :)

October 16, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterChewbob

I wanna see this cupcake that these people fought so hard to protect.

October 16, 2008 | Unregistered Commenterksaldria

Wouldn't you think that anyone who was so aware of Cake Wrecks would ponder the possibility that their wreck would wind up on there? Why make a wreck-tastic cake if it wasn't for the purpose that you want it to be on Cake Wrecks? You can't blame the photographer for that wreck, you should step up and submit it yourself! Or you should stop making wreck-worthy cakes!

October 16, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterRose

LOL This is awesome and I'm really curious about the wreaktastic spider cake now! I hope someone manages to catch a picture.

October 16, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterTobias

That is beyond awesome!!

But then, if they know their baked goods are wreck-worthy shouldn't the bakers take a little more time to make better cakes/cupcakes? If they took the time it takes to yell at customers and used it to learn how to decorate, they might make more money....and encourage more customers!!

October 16, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterLeslie

THAT ROCKS and is equally hilarious! If you don't want your cakes to appear on Cake Wrecks, don't make sucky cakes! (that c-section cake from yesterday i actually liked and would have laughed so hard had i been the receiver of it).

I found your site after my husband saw a blurb about it in our local newspaper. He knew I'd love it and I do!!

October 16, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterMarissa

LOL That's fantastic!! I would have snapped a pic anyway and stuck my tongue out at them....and then asked them bluntly "If you KNOW it's Wreck-worthy, then why do you still have it displayed?!?"

But that's just me.

October 16, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterMegan

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!

That just made my day.

Why did they even have it out if they immediately jumped to the conclusion that it was being sent to this blog?

October 16, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterFoxTrottinKate

hahahaha awesome. The best part = "you're going to put it on the cake wreck LIKE EVERYONE ELSE" HA! Poor wrecky cake decorators. I must see this spider cake.

October 16, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterAngela

I saw a cake the other day at the grocery store I SO wanted to take a picture of, but didn't have my camera. They piped a long two headed y shape, and then shoved those clown pick heads in them. There was several of these on one cake, in all different colors. No hands. No feet. Just "clowns" sprawled out on their stomachs.

October 16, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterCakeEater

That is PRICELESS!

October 16, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterBridget

I would have so bought that cake, whether I wanted/needed it or not!

I always forget there is a camera on my phone when I am browsing the bakery at the big box store.

My hubby went to store early this morning and brought home Halloween cupcakes. He comes in singing "I've got sprinkles, I've got sprinkles." and emphasizing he didn't bring home a Wreck!

October 16, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterPrinceton McKinney

LOL

I think that is HILARIOUS! Enough to make me start sportin' my DSLR around my neck more often again..even to the grocery store. And dare them to tell me 'no pictures' .. hey, I don't see a sign, there's no law...arrest me, go ahead :p

October 16, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterTara aka T

Oh my gosh - "you're going to send it to that cake wreck blog like everyone else" They KNOW they suck and they leave it out to show anyway?! What a flipping hoot!

Thought of you on Sunday when I was at a certain LARGE discount chain and they had a cupcake cake shaped like a baseball...

October 16, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterGina

So they knew their design was so bad she wasn't trying to mimic it?! Nice!

October 16, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterRonnica

That is amazing.

October 16, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterThe Mu

Oh, that's hilarious! They should have let her take it; it's the most fame they'll ever have. HAHAHAHAHA!

October 16, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterFreedomFirst

If it's that bad... why are they selling it? :)

October 16, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterSuzyhomemaker

(having a giggle fit)
It is like paparazzi for baked goods.

October 16, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterMuffin Pants

Just head to the Del Rio, Texas Walmart and you can find all the cake wrecks you want! Yee-Haw muchacho!

October 16, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterCharmCityChica

"... like everyone else"? How often are they inadvertantly published on here. Doesn't say much for you when asked if you have a portfolio, you direct them to Cakewrecks. ;)

October 16, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterKara

My husband came home last night and described a failed Bosses' Day cake to me complete with too many flowers, misspellings and odd candy hearts. I was wiggling with glee, clapping my hands together and practically squealing. "Did you take a picture???"

Sadly, the answer was no. **Sigh**

October 16, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterBeckyKay

Wow!! They yelled at you? Don't they know that bad press is better than no press?

October 16, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterSusie

lol @ that!
I sooooo want to see that cake now!!

October 16, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterLiwee Beepah

Ummm...the Krages document wouldn't exactly support the photographer in this instance:

"Property owners MAY LEGALLY PROHIBIT PHOTOGRAPHY on their premises but have no right to prohibit others from photographing their property
from other locations....In most places, you may reasonably
assume that taking photographs
is allowed and that you do not
need explicit permission....In any case, WHEN A PROPERTY OWNER TELLS YOU NOT TO TAKE PHOTOGRAPHS WHILE ON THE PREMISES, YOU ARE LEGALLY OBLIGATED TO HONOR THE REQUEST.

October 16, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

If they're worried, maybe they should work on getting better at their jobs.

Priceless! It is bad when they know they produce wrecks!

October 16, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterNeen

Our local Tom Thumb grocery store has a whole case of decorated cakes just waiting...like blank slates...for the witty comment. Even a case of frozen cakes, too. Oh, so tempting. Any ideas for a 21 year old whose mother has been too cheap to buy him a store bought cake? I actually got to choose his birthday, 10-27-87 and now he complains about not being born on Halloween. Help !

October 16, 2008 | Unregistered Commenterjoyce

CONTROOOL?

Pronouncing that phonetically, I get a jamaican man telling me that his oral secretions are all dried up.

October 16, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterBraden

hahahaha! Hilarious! I hope someone sends in the picture.

October 16, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterMelanie

Ha! My mom and I are big fans. The other day we were at the grocery store picking up a birthday cake. I asked the lady working to write Happy Birthday Shawn and add some ribbons to the cake. She said I'm not a decorator. I leaned over to my mom and said this may end up a wreck. As soon as the words were out of my mouth I see the kind lady look from over the counter and say, "You guys can't put this on CAKEWRECKS, you hear!?" Haha!
You ARE famous!

October 16, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterCarrie

Spoilsports! It's not Jen's fault their cakes fail at life!

October 16, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterCalantha

You are my hero!!!

October 16, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterNG

OMG, I nearly fell over laughing! That's too funny!!! Gotta love the self-knowledge of the bakery....

October 16, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterDea

Actually, Mardek and the last anonymous, the law does support the photographer. Because the store is open to the public, it is considered a public place, and so anyone can take pictures of whatever they want, as described on the photojojo page.

October 16, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterLalaroo

ROFLOL!!! You'd think they would take the hint that they need to improve their decorating skills

October 16, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterZhetta

i think stores are considered private property

October 16, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

You are completely within your rights to take a photograph within a store as long as the item is not copyrighted (like artwork) or a person, especially for personal use. Once a store owner puts anything on display, you are free to take pictures if you desire; there is no difference between seeing something and seeing something in the lens of the camera.

Not to mention that it is a really bad way to treat a customer.

hahahaha! That's the best story ever, especially that they told her that she wasn't going to be sending that to her husband! I know I've been on badparents over at Live Journal and your website was mentioned. (I was already a faithful reader) It surprises me still that you are so well-known and getting bigger (and more POWERFUL) every day!

October 16, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterJennifer

This made me laugh milk out my nose! Yuck! Too funny.

October 16, 2008 | Unregistered Commentersues2u2

If only I had been there! I can take pictures with my phone without opening it...very sneaky and handy for things like this!

October 16, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterTippy

There are just so many things wrong with that person's experience. Like so many before said, if you KNOW there's a Cake Wrecks blog, and you KNOW your cakes suck, get some instruction or hire new staff that do good work. And just for the snippy comment about the picture taking, I would've come back with my full on camera and taken all the pictures I wanted and posed the cakes until the store manager asked me to leave. Of course then I'd also have to point out how I have a HUGE mouth and I'd be telling the world how I was treated and at exactly which store.

Overall, I'd say it was all just complete idiocy on the bakery's part.

October 16, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterAmanda

Mrs. T-- send your hubby to buy that cake PRONTO. Guys can do that whole disinterested 'yeah-it-looks-fine' face. We'll all chip in.

October 16, 2008 | Unregistered Commentermrs. q.

How funny, the thought of someone thinking I was absolutely crazy for taking a picture of the cupcake wreck crossed my mind, but not the thought of the manager coming after me like Brittany Spears decking the paparazzi!

October 16, 2008 | Unregistered Commentermsklem

Talk about power- i read this at 10 am and i'm still checking to see if anyone sent in a picture at 10 PM! and i'm feeling impatient because there's not one:)

October 16, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterMichael

cMy local Kroger had a Spiderweb cupcake cake that my son just LOVED today. Was it that one? It looked like a spiral.

October 16, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterJennifer

Personally, I'd have bought the damn cupcake just to get the pictures on here.

Next time, Mrs. Tantrum, get that telescopic lens ready. ;)
