What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Cheap Cheat Sheets

Ah, where WOULD we be without those helpful hints from our friendly wreckerators?

"WHAT IN HOLY...oh. It says, 'Meow!'

"So it must be something that can imitate a cat."

Sometimes the hints are fairly subtle:

Pssst. You misspelled "Poopy."

While wiser wreckerators go for slightly more direct labeling:

Finally answering the question, "Can I get a what-what?"

Now you're just screwing with us.

And finally, my favorite, no doubt written after someone was asked just a few times too many:

Thanks to Sara A., Julia L., Stephanie L., Sadie P., Rose B., Anne B., Elizabeth S., & Erin F., who are all going, "OoooOOooh, NOW I see it!"

My little girl (3) just saw the last one and said, "*I* want a birthday cake submarine!"

I think that strawberry(?) cake will give me nightmares! :S

Anon @ 3:08,

I'm going to go with most. We are lucky enough to have some of the best bakers in the world reading our little blog.

However, I like to think that our readers are humble enough to be the first to admit it if their cake making skill are below average.

I loved the bootie one!

After close inspection, the thing in front of the cat looks like a "fish"...

sushi anyone?

I'm not too up on what's popular at the moment, so I don't get the "what what in the butt" reference. Can't quite decide if I should google it or not. Sometimes ignorance truly is the blissful way to go.

August 1, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJulie

"What? What? In the butt!"

August 1, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterDanielle

That "strawberry" looks like it needs restraints.

August 1, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterNana

#1 is instantly recognizable as Dylan Thomas's ambitious cat (who wished to be a cow).

August 1, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterDidoCarthage

The strawberry looked more like a cheerful punk rasta with leprosy...blech.

August 1, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterKellie

I think that strawberry has mold spots instead of seeds ;p

Hmm, they don't really look like the things they're supposed to be. Anybody else notice that?

After watching marathon sessions of Project Runway, all I can say about that first one is - it's a "hot mess!"

wv = gazewar. I've got nothing to say about that but I thought it was cool.

Those are some hilarious cake fails.

August 1, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterRoyce Geist

I was holding it together until I saw the popcoal cake comment:
"Now you're just screwing with us." Made me glad I didn't have anything in my mouth.

wv- kolorm: To make the rainbow cake get a bunch of frostings and kolorm

POPCOAN! I want some.

It's a mask.

August 1, 2011 | Unregistered Commentermimi

I bet I could make a cake at least as good as some of these.

August 1, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Just because I didn't notice anyone pointing it out, the "What! What!" cake looks to be a direct reference to the song, "What What (In The Butt)" -- Samwell wears a pair of black jeans with "What What" printed on the pockets at one point in the music video. I doubt it's a coincidence. :P

That "strawberry" CCC has got to be the worst CCC I have ever seen, and that's sayin' something.

August 1, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterSusan

Thongcake has an unhealthily small waist. What, what, got no guts.

wv: aling - I only had a sliver of one cheek, and all that black fondant left me aling.

#2 is (presumably unintentionally) accurate...when I was growing up, my mother raised a litter (or two) of Labrador puppies every other year or so. Spend a month cleaning up after 10 puppies and you'll understand why my brother & I referred to them as "poopies."

August 1, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

I am so tempted to go up to the nearest bakery counter and say, "Can I get a 'what, what'?" just to see what happens...

wv: psessi
What psessi these bakers?!?!

August 1, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterlisadh

Wow what a giant..thong lmao. Heck wearing them is literally a pain so why on earth would you want to eat something like that? Revenge? Lol. Boy do I wish it was still Sunday for now that poopy dog will haunt my dreams.

August 2, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterArlene

i think what! what! describes most cakewrecks.

now i'm thinking about the entity called what in the mrs. roger's neighborhood episode of the real ghostbusters.

August 2, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterarchersangel

I said what what in the cake, I said what what in the cake! lol

August 2, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAdorably Dead

Did Butters wear a little thong when he did the "What What" song? I think of Butters from South Park = butter cream frosting. Mmmm frosting...

I think that is actually supposed to be a "What, What? In the butt!" cake. Enjoy.

August 2, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

At first look I thought the rainbow cake said RaiNoow! . On second look, it looked like RaiNsow! . lol

August 2, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterRachel H.

that "strawberry" is horrifying. i keep thinking you guys will eventually run out of material. but no. cake wrecking has never been worse.

August 2, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterecuakim

Hmmm.... I never realized strawberries were direct decendents of Vikings. Thanks for the history lesson!

August 3, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAlma

Darn. Craig already said was I was going to say about the popcoan. :(

August 5, 2011 | Unregistered Commentersnuzzle

I'm surprised. The butt cake is from "what what in the butt". I'm surprised you didn't know that. and NO Butters from SP did NOT do it first. LOL

the What! What! August 14, 2013 | Unregistered Commentermapakama
