What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

The Cake Wrecks "Winter Underlined" Tour

The day has finally arrived, loyal minions! I can now officially announce our third "world" tour lineup, and make at least three quarters of you mad that we're not visiting your city! WHOOHOOOO!!!

See, here's the thing:

The thing is, we're not flying this time. With the general awful, stressful, germ-exposing experience that is flying these days - not to mention airport "security" ridiculousness - we're just not up for it.

So, we're driving instead.

And, since we only have a limited amount of time between when the book publishes and when book stores stop allowing authors to appear because of the holidays, we're not going to make it out to the west coast this time.

But - BUT - we are going to 16 cities, most of which we've never been to before! And Canada! We're going to Canada!

So without further ado, here's our tour line-up:

- Atlanta, GA 10/18/11 (Tuesday) at the Buckhead Barnes & Noble, 7 pm

- Charlotteish, NC (Concord) 10/20/11 (Thursday) at the Concord Books-A-Million, 6:30 pm

- Richmond, VA 10/21/11 (Friday), Barnes & Noble, 7pm

- Baltimore, MD 10/22/11 (Saturday), Barnes & Noble, 2pm

- Philadelphiaish, PA (Exton) 10/24/11 (Monday) Barnes & Noble, 7pm

- Hartford, CT 10/25/11 (Tuesday) Barnes & Noble, 7pm

- Bostonish, MA (Brookline) 10/27/11 (Thursday) Brookline Booksmith, 7pm

- Montreal, Quebec 10/29/11 (Saturday) Indigo Books, 2pm

- Toronto, Ontario 11/01/11 (Tuesday) Indigo Books, 7pm

- Pittsburghish, PA (Homestead) 11/03/11 (Thursday) Barnes & Noble, 7pm

- Chicagoish, IL (Winnetka) 11/06/11 (Sunday) The Book Stall at Chestnut Court, 2pm

- St. Louis, MO 11/07/11 (Monday) Left Bank Books (Downtown location), 7pm

- Memphis, TN 11/09/11 (Wednesday) Barnes & Noble, 7pm

- Dallasish, TX (Fairview) 11/11/11 (Friday) A Real Bookstore, 7pm

- Houston, TX 11/13/11 (Sunday) Barnes & Noble, 2pm

- New Orleans, LA 11/15/11 (Tuesday) Garden District Book Shop, 7pm

- And Orlando. Probably. Maybe. We're working on it.

As before, our tours will include a show by John and yours truly, lots of laughs, free cake, a wreckplica cupcake contest, prizes, and an all-night rave party with your fellow wreckies. (We'll vote on whose house once we get there.) Also, I might be lying about the rave party. But I might not be, either.

We've worked very hard to ensure that every show will be free for you to attend - something that is becoming a rarity these days, since book stores now often charge for author signings. (Yes, really - and that was news to me, too.) So, bring the kids! Bring your friends! Don't make me and John eat all this cake by ourselves!

(Though if no one shows up, I totally will. And I'll wash it all down with my salty, salty tears.)

Speaking of which: bakers, if you'd like to volunteer your services for a show near you, please e-mail me! It's a great way to show off your mad skilz to local cake-lovers, and we promise to give you lots of props at the show and here on the blog. (Sorry, professional bakers only, please!)

And west coast, I'm sorry we're missing you this time. I truly am. If it helps any, it's possible we'll be doing something out your way next year, so try not to despair *too* much.

We'll be publishing separate event pages soon to collect RSVPs and give you all the specifics for each city, so 'til then, mark your calendars, and start planning those wreckplicas!

Update from john: To those of you asking about detours and inbetween stops, we would absolutely love to. But we literally don't have time.  For example, on Friday the 22nd, we drive from Charlotte to Ricmond and do a show at 7pm.  After the show, we get back in the car and drive from Richmond to Baltimore to get ready for a show the next day at 2.  It's crazy but coordinating bookstores and dates and drive times leaves us with a slightly absurd schedule.  It's a little over 6,000 miles in 34 days with about 100 hours of driving.

Also, sometimes finding a bookstore that could work with the schedule required us to go a little outside the cities.  For instance, the Chicago stop is actually about 30 minutes north of the city.  It's the best we could do.

And finally, to our awesome European readers, we will get there someday.  Maybe even next year depending on schedule. I've always wanted to do a road trip through Europe.

Thanks and Wreck On!

john (the hubby of Jen)

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJen

I got excited when I saw Philadelphia, then read you'll actually be in Exton. Exton is about an hour's drive from Philly in good traffic.

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterColeen

PITTSBURGH!!! But which Barnes and Noble? We have quite a few.

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterBecky

I shall not burden you with the sadness of the whoooooooooole state of NY. No, I won't!!

Instead I wish you a safe and fun trip!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You guys are the greatest!

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterKarla T're snubbing Austin! But you had more people signed up for your original date in Austin than any other city last time! And Dallas tried to kill you! Why oh why would you do Dallas and not Austin?

I'd have totally made you something spiffy...

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterKimberly Chapman

WOOHOO! Chicago! Actually, even better, not IN the city proper. (Ye gods I hate downtown...) I am SO THERE!

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterWendy

I understand the whole scheduling nightmare but I am surprised there is no stop in my home state of NY that I could send my mother to. I am all for the Europe tour as I am currently living in Sicily where my husband is stationed. Come on over and enjoy Europe. It is interesting to note that it was due to our move that I started reading your blog, I came across it when we were stuck in the hotel and was reading back entries to pass time and now I read it daily. Thanks for my laugh a day.

So on the next tour you'll be coming to the West Coast AND to Canada, right? Waiting in Vancouver. Totally with you on the no flying thing. I've been taking the train down to San Francisco every few months to see my Mom ever since they started with the body scanner things at airports. That was the fuhgeddaboudit moment for me.

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterTC

Hey! 11/3 you'll be able to stop in Erie, PA. Come on! Be a sport!

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterIngrid

HOLY CRAP. No one comes to West Hartford. *so very happy dance*

Not to mention, I have absolutely no car, but you're coming to one of the places I can walk to. Can't wait to meet you in person!

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterQuinn

You are going to have a great time at Brookline Booksmith! I love that place.

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterGuest

p.s. there is more than one barnes and noble here in pittsburgh so more details would be appreciated

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterhello haha narf

I'm putting my plug in early for COLORADO next year!!! OK, that sounded weird. I'm not really "putting a plug in." Just sayin' it would be awesome sauce if you came here. =P *awkward*

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMarcy W.

Wow, you're giving Texas not one, but two(!), chances to kill you? Forget that -- come to New Mexico instead! We have aliens!

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterInaya

Question about the Dallas stop. Last time it was listed as "Dallas" but was actually located in Plano. I know of "A Real Bookstore" in the nearby town of Fairview. Is it that one or is this one actually in Dallas? Really hoping for Fairview! But I'll do all I can to make it either way!

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAndrea

You go all the way around Cincinnati :( *le sad*

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterlexcade

I was thinking "No O'do signing, it's your home town almost." then I remembered, we don't have that many book stores anymore! they're all closing! boohoo hoo! So, I think you ought to set up a table at Lake Eola or a bakery and have some fun.

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJamie

I'm SOO glad I got to meet you two last summer in Salt Lake City! I'll just have to buy the new book on Amazon for Christmas and someday I'll get it signed. ;-)

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterlawnajo

Oh, well since your tour doesn't start until the 18th that means you can still make a quick flight up to Seattle for Steamcon III which is the 14th-16th....

I know, I know, it'll never happen. But I can dream, can't I? Bummer too, I even had an awesome idea for the whole thing planned if you guys were able to make it. Oh yeah, and it would have meant a cake from Mike's Amazing Cakes...just sayin'....

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterVadoBanane

I am so super excited you're coming to Pittsburgh!!!!!! I'm going to try and gather all my friends to come see y'all talk and eat some cake! Woot! Woot! :-D

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterDani

See you in N'awlins!
I am so excited. That's the week of my birthday! It will be a cake-filled week!

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMaddie

We still have love fer ya here on the west coast. I'm liking Sharyn's idea of a webcast! What all would be involved in that? Like town hall meetings--you could do your show once, and zillions of us fans would be in homes across the nation or meeting halls participating together, with local bakeries! Whaddaya say? Cheers for a successful trip... XOXO

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterKarin

Yeeeeeesssssssssssss!!!!!!!!!!! I'm always whining that no one comes to Louisiana, and I nearly shrieked with joy when I saw you'll be in New Orleans! I can't wait!

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterBunny

Heck to the yeah!!! RIC in the house - er - on the tour! I'll be there. EEEeeek! I'm so excited. Can't really explain why, but, uh, YAY!!!

You and John could stay over at our place and get up to drive to Boston in the morning! I could fix you a crabCAKE dinner and breakfast omelettes with potatoCAKES...For reals, yo.

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAmye

And now I will proceed to cry as I realize that not only will the Keys or South Florida at all not be on your itinerary, but that once our Borders closes in a week we'll have no bookstore AT ALL for you to EVER come visit or do a signing at. There goes my dream. (At least come as far as Miami someday! Please! Even if it's five years from now! What about Ft. Lauderdale? I don't mind driving!)

My whining aside, I wish you the best of luck and safety on your Tour. =) I'll definitely be buying the new book when it comes out. ^^

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterChey

I am so excited! You are coming to my (almost) city! St Louis! wooooooooo can't wait, putting it on my calendar RIGHT NOW!

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterLori B

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterStephanie H.

OMG - I got excited when I saw Philly, and then when I saw that it's actually Exton, I'm about to jump out of my chair!! SO close to my house, and TOTALLY going on my calendar RIGHT NOW!!!!

Plz excuse the caps and exclamation points.....I'm a wee bit excited right now!

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterCassie

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterWendie

Nope...nearest big town that's near us is Birmingham...West Midlands...England. But I can hope. Can I tempt you with my homemade chocolate walnut scones?

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterFidra

When you announced your: third "world" tour, I thought it really said "third world" tour and I was perplexed. Clearly I have been looking at too many mis-placed quotation marks on this site! So excited for your tour and that you were able to work out a driving plan after all - but sad to not have any stops in NJ or NY. Boo - On the flipside I think it is cool that you are spreading the love and visiting cities you have never visited so I will restrain my sadness and be happy for those who get to have a stop this time around!

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterWendy

For a moment there I though your book signing in Chicago corresponding with Alton Brown's visit to the Book Stall, sadly, he will be there on Oct 6th. That would have been an amazing double feature for a geek/foodie like myself. My imagination is running rampant with ideas of what you all could get up to if you teamed up. Maybe its a good thing you won't be there on the same day I might have sprained something laughing.
