What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

The Cake Wrecks "Winter Underlined" Tour

The day has finally arrived, loyal minions! I can now officially announce our third "world" tour lineup, and make at least three quarters of you mad that we're not visiting your city! WHOOHOOOO!!!

See, here's the thing:

The thing is, we're not flying this time. With the general awful, stressful, germ-exposing experience that is flying these days - not to mention airport "security" ridiculousness - we're just not up for it.

So, we're driving instead.

And, since we only have a limited amount of time between when the book publishes and when book stores stop allowing authors to appear because of the holidays, we're not going to make it out to the west coast this time.

But - BUT - we are going to 16 cities, most of which we've never been to before! And Canada! We're going to Canada!

So without further ado, here's our tour line-up:

- Atlanta, GA 10/18/11 (Tuesday) at the Buckhead Barnes & Noble, 7 pm

- Charlotteish, NC (Concord) 10/20/11 (Thursday) at the Concord Books-A-Million, 6:30 pm

- Richmond, VA 10/21/11 (Friday), Barnes & Noble, 7pm

- Baltimore, MD 10/22/11 (Saturday), Barnes & Noble, 2pm

- Philadelphiaish, PA (Exton) 10/24/11 (Monday) Barnes & Noble, 7pm

- Hartford, CT 10/25/11 (Tuesday) Barnes & Noble, 7pm

- Bostonish, MA (Brookline) 10/27/11 (Thursday) Brookline Booksmith, 7pm

- Montreal, Quebec 10/29/11 (Saturday) Indigo Books, 2pm

- Toronto, Ontario 11/01/11 (Tuesday) Indigo Books, 7pm

- Pittsburghish, PA (Homestead) 11/03/11 (Thursday) Barnes & Noble, 7pm

- Chicagoish, IL (Winnetka) 11/06/11 (Sunday) The Book Stall at Chestnut Court, 2pm

- St. Louis, MO 11/07/11 (Monday) Left Bank Books (Downtown location), 7pm

- Memphis, TN 11/09/11 (Wednesday) Barnes & Noble, 7pm

- Dallasish, TX (Fairview) 11/11/11 (Friday) A Real Bookstore, 7pm

- Houston, TX 11/13/11 (Sunday) Barnes & Noble, 2pm

- New Orleans, LA 11/15/11 (Tuesday) Garden District Book Shop, 7pm

- And Orlando. Probably. Maybe. We're working on it.

As before, our tours will include a show by John and yours truly, lots of laughs, free cake, a wreckplica cupcake contest, prizes, and an all-night rave party with your fellow wreckies. (We'll vote on whose house once we get there.) Also, I might be lying about the rave party. But I might not be, either.

We've worked very hard to ensure that every show will be free for you to attend - something that is becoming a rarity these days, since book stores now often charge for author signings. (Yes, really - and that was news to me, too.) So, bring the kids! Bring your friends! Don't make me and John eat all this cake by ourselves!

(Though if no one shows up, I totally will. And I'll wash it all down with my salty, salty tears.)

Speaking of which: bakers, if you'd like to volunteer your services for a show near you, please e-mail me! It's a great way to show off your mad skilz to local cake-lovers, and we promise to give you lots of props at the show and here on the blog. (Sorry, professional bakers only, please!)

And west coast, I'm sorry we're missing you this time. I truly am. If it helps any, it's possible we'll be doing something out your way next year, so try not to despair *too* much.

We'll be publishing separate event pages soon to collect RSVPs and give you all the specifics for each city, so 'til then, mark your calendars, and start planning those wreckplicas!

Update from john: To those of you asking about detours and inbetween stops, we would absolutely love to. But we literally don't have time.  For example, on Friday the 22nd, we drive from Charlotte to Ricmond and do a show at 7pm.  After the show, we get back in the car and drive from Richmond to Baltimore to get ready for a show the next day at 2.  It's crazy but coordinating bookstores and dates and drive times leaves us with a slightly absurd schedule.  It's a little over 6,000 miles in 34 days with about 100 hours of driving.

Also, sometimes finding a bookstore that could work with the schedule required us to go a little outside the cities.  For instance, the Chicago stop is actually about 30 minutes north of the city.  It's the best we could do.

And finally, to our awesome European readers, we will get there someday.  Maybe even next year depending on schedule. I've always wanted to do a road trip through Europe.

Thanks and Wreck On!

john (the hubby of Jen)

After the bookstore in Atlanta closes, come and visit us at Netherworld Haunted House. You may have encountered our monsters at Dragon*Con or seen us marching in the parade. We'll be open until 11pm on that night, plus if you're heading to NC that night we're on your way. We're off of
I-85 N, just past I-285.
Check us out:

Where in Richmond? Where in Richmond? There are far too many Barnes and Noble locations for me to be driving to every single one looking for you!

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterdeborah

I agree with Steph (waaaaay at the top)... you should stop in Minnesota, specifically St Paul since it is better than Minneapolis :P

Have a fun on your tour!

So excited! Then so crestfallen when I saw that you bypassed South Carolina! Maybe next time... I would LOVE to meet you guys; too bad I really can't take a few days off to get to either the Atlanta or Charlotte gigs. Pretty please, put Columbia or Charleston, SC on your to-do-tour-list? Puh-leeez?

On another note, have a blast up in Canuk-land. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Montreal - a preview of Europe as far as architecture and style. And, the French Canadians are so nice (Parisian French were not as tolerant of us Ameri-kan tourists when I was over there many years ago, but then, who would be of a bunch of high-schoolers running around the city, being loud and screechy...). If you have time, check out anything Cirque du Soleil, since that's their home turf!

I sincerely hope you have a fun-filled, happy road trip... Enjoy!

IMO, it's wonderful that you're looking out for your readers by finding free venues, and that you're looking out for yourselves by driving instead of flying. If you're not comfortable, it won't be fun for anyone.
Seems like you have a nice mix of cities, many of which have had a rough year and deserve some fun. Dallas isn't too far from me, so I might be able to make it there. :-)

I am literally crying that you aren't going to be in SoCal!!!!!! My winter is ruined I say, ruined!!! (well, not really since we don't get a winter per say, but you get the idea LOL)
I am crossing everything that you will be out on the west coast next year...skip the east and show some love to the WEST!!!!

That being said, safe journeys and here's to staying healthy in Texas!!! =)

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJenBen

Hmm.....3 days to get from Pittsburgh to Chicago--a 9 hour drive-- but no stop(s) in Columbus OR Cleveland, Toledo, or Detroit...................very sad indeed.

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterRae

Sad to see OHIO won't get to see you :( PA rates high enough to see you twice?? so not fair,:(

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterHeart

I *might* have to take off school to drive to St. Louis and see you! Maybe next year you can do a Campus tour and stop in Columbia, MO instead!! College students love a good laugh and free cake (wink wink)

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMariah

Bwaaaa!! No Pasadena stop. *sobs loudly* *hick*

Oh, look! Cake! Shiny!

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterdjgonzales

Oh, yay! Charlotte is only two hours away from me in Asheville NC. Hmmmmmmm. Gotta make that work. :D

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterDanielle

Ok, I'm used to people skipping Florida. (Especially Central or West Central Florida.) It's pretty common. But come on guys, you LIVE here!! Why skip Florida when it's home base? No Orlando or Tampa shows? At all?

That's just poop. :(

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered Commentermiss m

I'm in the 3/4ths majority! Yay? So Here's your obligatory sadface from Ohio! Maybe someday. :) Safe travels!

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJordan

OMG OMG OMG! Montreal is totally driveable from OTTAWA! Come visit my house!!!!

Alternatively I may pack up the kids & drive down to Montreal just for cake mmmmmm..... well mostly to see you guys really ;)

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterSLantos

ohmigosh--so excited you are coming to Atlanta. I live three hours away and have a three-year-old and a three month old, but I totally plan to drag them to the signing in Buckhead. I am thrilled!!!

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAnita

I'm pulling my own hair out on behalf of Jen and John after reading SO MANY comments of "but you're only going to be X hours away from where I live so why can't you also stop here????" If that's the case people, then YOU drive to see THEM rather than expecting it to be the other way around, SHEESH!!! Isn't this FREE awesome blog gift enough?

To Jen and John, I am sorry if my earlier comment came off as yet another complaining fan. I was trying to be funny and also tempt you to perhaps plan a trip to the great NW next year for Steamcon as I really DO have some awesome ideas related to such an excursion that I hope you would enjoy. Plus, I would totally be willing to include a Mike's Amazing Cakes cake in order to sweeten the deal. I figure, if he knew it was for you it would turn out WAY better than my wedding cake which was NOT one of his masterpieces BY FAR.

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterVadoBanane

You're coming to Pittsburgh! But I won't be able to make it since my due date is 11/2, boo.

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterClodia

@Michelle--Holy Toledo! Someone ELSE who loves AB! My 8-year-old daughter (with Asperger's, no less) wants to be a chef because of him. She watches "Good Eats" for a treat. When she was 5, she received a baking set for Christmas from Alton. She was more excited about that than the boxes that said "from Santa Claus"! What 5-year-old knows who Alton Brown is?!? I wish I could tell him what a profound effect he's had on her life. Oh, and I like him, too.

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterSaraCVT

come to ohio!!!! WE LOVE this site!!

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterRachael G

You're coming to Canada! Yay! I don't even mind that you're not coming to Ottawa, I will totally drive down to Montreal to see you guys. Awesome!

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterCynthia

HOLY COW!!!!! One of your stops is actually in EXTON? At the EXTON B & N? Where I go personally almost every week for lunch because if I don't my two-year-old gets very upset about NOT GOING TO THE BOOKSTORE???? Erm, actually, that last sentence probably didn't need the caps . . .

ANYWAY, good gracious, how on earth did that happen? Nobody ever comes anywhere near me! (Not because I smell or am contagious or anything, honest; it just seems like cool people planning on doing a show or giving a lecture or doing anything else that I might be interested in seem to prefer doing it in locations that aren't easy for me to get to . . . hmph!) But NOT you guys!!! You two are totally, practically coming to my hometown, just about! And ALMOST showing up on NEARLY my BIRTHDAY as well!!! WELL! Well . . . Actually, I'm just so flabbergasted I don't know what to say . . . except that I am definitely contacting friends and making plans, right now! (Well, as soon as I'm done writing this post, anyway!)

And good luck and safe travels for your trip before, after and during your Philly/Exton stop! Your schedule is so crazy, I hope that you have time to eat something besides just the cake at your shows. Seriously, we all know that sugar highs can be fun, but not while driving!

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterIkwig

You are totally missing the BEST city in Texas - AUSTIN!! So sorry to miss you!

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterElaine Lincoln

Well since you aren't hitting up Western NY with your awesomeness, I'm going to have to talk The Man into me getting an enhanced license so I can go to Canada and see you! Or you know...someday when we go to Florida, find a way to stalk you. Either way works, but I'm sure the former is smiled upon by the legal community. :P

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterBadCookie

WHICH Barnes & Noble in Houston??? There are so many of them. I will take a day of vacation just to be there :-)

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered Commentertuesy

Goodness, you're brave people, taking on all that driving. I do entirely sympathise re the dislike of flying though. And if you ever get as far as the UK - should we charter the new QE liner for you? - we'll make sure to bake plenty of Sally Lunns, pikelets, and Dundee cakes for you. Have fun on your tour. :)

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAJR

Woohoo! Hooray for Hartford! Now I just have to convince my stick-in-the-mud husband to watch the babies so I can go!

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterLizardisanerd

okay, just be aware when the supersecret Orlando fanclub kidnaps you before the trip to throw our own party: you had it coming.

we'll release you for the "real" tour, of course...

(psst, other cities they love more than where they live, you might want to start saving your change to ransom them with- we'll use it for a good cause like bail money)

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterBarbara Anne

AAAH YES, YOU'RE COMING TO NEW ORLEANS!!!! Get ready to have some AWESOME times! (I suggest a Frenchman St. partay afterward, but that's just a local pimpin out her peeps!)

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterBecka

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterTamTam

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterllamagirl

Ok, really, people? I'm sorry, Manhattan, I'm sorry DC. You get EVERYONE. You can't have Jen this time. (I'm so excited you'll be coming to my hometown... I'm gonna have to come up with an excuse to go visit...)

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMopher

Fellow Floridian begging for stops here also. I'm currently wondering if there is a bookstore here in Pensacola that would allow an author to appear after 11/15.... you have to drive through here to get back home after your last stop anyway, right? Just a thought. I'd also drive to Mobile, AL, for it. Yes, I will cross the state line for you!
