What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

The Cake Wrecks "Winter Underlined" Tour

The day has finally arrived, loyal minions! I can now officially announce our third "world" tour lineup, and make at least three quarters of you mad that we're not visiting your city! WHOOHOOOO!!!

See, here's the thing:

The thing is, we're not flying this time. With the general awful, stressful, germ-exposing experience that is flying these days - not to mention airport "security" ridiculousness - we're just not up for it.

So, we're driving instead.

And, since we only have a limited amount of time between when the book publishes and when book stores stop allowing authors to appear because of the holidays, we're not going to make it out to the west coast this time.

But - BUT - we are going to 16 cities, most of which we've never been to before! And Canada! We're going to Canada!

So without further ado, here's our tour line-up:

- Atlanta, GA 10/18/11 (Tuesday) at the Buckhead Barnes & Noble, 7 pm

- Charlotteish, NC (Concord) 10/20/11 (Thursday) at the Concord Books-A-Million, 6:30 pm

- Richmond, VA 10/21/11 (Friday), Barnes & Noble, 7pm

- Baltimore, MD 10/22/11 (Saturday), Barnes & Noble, 2pm

- Philadelphiaish, PA (Exton) 10/24/11 (Monday) Barnes & Noble, 7pm

- Hartford, CT 10/25/11 (Tuesday) Barnes & Noble, 7pm

- Bostonish, MA (Brookline) 10/27/11 (Thursday) Brookline Booksmith, 7pm

- Montreal, Quebec 10/29/11 (Saturday) Indigo Books, 2pm

- Toronto, Ontario 11/01/11 (Tuesday) Indigo Books, 7pm

- Pittsburghish, PA (Homestead) 11/03/11 (Thursday) Barnes & Noble, 7pm

- Chicagoish, IL (Winnetka) 11/06/11 (Sunday) The Book Stall at Chestnut Court, 2pm

- St. Louis, MO 11/07/11 (Monday) Left Bank Books (Downtown location), 7pm

- Memphis, TN 11/09/11 (Wednesday) Barnes & Noble, 7pm

- Dallasish, TX (Fairview) 11/11/11 (Friday) A Real Bookstore, 7pm

- Houston, TX 11/13/11 (Sunday) Barnes & Noble, 2pm

- New Orleans, LA 11/15/11 (Tuesday) Garden District Book Shop, 7pm

- And Orlando. Probably. Maybe. We're working on it.

As before, our tours will include a show by John and yours truly, lots of laughs, free cake, a wreckplica cupcake contest, prizes, and an all-night rave party with your fellow wreckies. (We'll vote on whose house once we get there.) Also, I might be lying about the rave party. But I might not be, either.

We've worked very hard to ensure that every show will be free for you to attend - something that is becoming a rarity these days, since book stores now often charge for author signings. (Yes, really - and that was news to me, too.) So, bring the kids! Bring your friends! Don't make me and John eat all this cake by ourselves!

(Though if no one shows up, I totally will. And I'll wash it all down with my salty, salty tears.)

Speaking of which: bakers, if you'd like to volunteer your services for a show near you, please e-mail me! It's a great way to show off your mad skilz to local cake-lovers, and we promise to give you lots of props at the show and here on the blog. (Sorry, professional bakers only, please!)

And west coast, I'm sorry we're missing you this time. I truly am. If it helps any, it's possible we'll be doing something out your way next year, so try not to despair *too* much.

We'll be publishing separate event pages soon to collect RSVPs and give you all the specifics for each city, so 'til then, mark your calendars, and start planning those wreckplicas!

Update from john: To those of you asking about detours and inbetween stops, we would absolutely love to. But we literally don't have time.  For example, on Friday the 22nd, we drive from Charlotte to Ricmond and do a show at 7pm.  After the show, we get back in the car and drive from Richmond to Baltimore to get ready for a show the next day at 2.  It's crazy but coordinating bookstores and dates and drive times leaves us with a slightly absurd schedule.  It's a little over 6,000 miles in 34 days with about 100 hours of driving.

Also, sometimes finding a bookstore that could work with the schedule required us to go a little outside the cities.  For instance, the Chicago stop is actually about 30 minutes north of the city.  It's the best we could do.

And finally, to our awesome European readers, we will get there someday.  Maybe even next year depending on schedule. I've always wanted to do a road trip through Europe.

Thanks and Wreck On!

john (the hubby of Jen)

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAddie

Aw man, you finally make it out to "Charlotte", but you'll actually be in Concord! I would love to come and see you, but that's almost an hour away and I can't drag a toddler out that late. SO disappointed! (Next time please just put Concord, as it isn't really close for a LOT of people in Charlotte).

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMarny

YES!!! Road trip! I'm gassed up and ready to go...now I just gotta get the car ready....!

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered Commentermel

No love for New Jersey? :-(

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterCarrie

You know, those of us who live outside of North America have always harboured a sneaking suspicion that Americans are unaware that other countries (apart from Mexico and Canada) exist.

You are confirming that suspicion.

"World" tour indeed.

[Editor's note: Oh, we know you're there. It's just that you live so. Far. Away. Plus, it's hard to drive across the Atlantic. We're working on it. -john]

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterSharon B

silly me!! I just realized you're saving your Orlando date to CLOSE the tour. :D
can't wait for you to release that date.

I am known for holding grudges, however, I will sincerely send every possible good vibe and healthy thoughts on your journey (especially for TX).

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterBarbara Anne

How could you... *froth* *rage* *froth* ...not my city... *more random sputtering, fading into a yawn*

*gets bored and wanders off*

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterSherrie

I am so glad that you're finally visiting somewhere near New Jersey! I will do my utmost to be there for your 10/24 signing. I have been reading this blog for years now and have loved every minute of it! These bad cakes keep me laughing and smiling on crumby days, and give me something extra to do when I go to the grocery store.

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterNiki

SEE YOU IN CHARLOTTE...I'd even host the rave, if by rave you mean 3 people max in my house :D

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJeepchic20

I vote for your next world tour starting in Sydney, Australia... Maybe you can be like Oprah and fly a whole plane full of CW fans over for a tour of Australia's best bakeries!

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAna

Yay! Can't wait to see you in NOLA :)

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJulie

You are coming to Hartford. I am SO EXCITED!! I just now need to tell my husband to put that in our calendar.

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJanice

What, making an icing trail all across the midwest and no Cake Wrecks for Indy!? I am thoroughly bummed, dismayed, and have my ganache panties in a twist.

"Tis a sad, sad day. :-(

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterSara

"Montreal"... SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE. That is all.

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered Commentergeekdannzen

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMarcy K.

Houston! YAY! Can't wait! :)

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJulie

YEAH!!!!!!! You're coming to Montreal! I'm so happy! I think I may just be going to my 1st ever book signing! Can't wait to meet you both, and of course if you don't mind driving out past the suburbs, we could do the rave at my place.

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterCynthia

Hmmm, which is closer Charlottish or Richmond.

Since you'll be passing by on the interstate between the two maybe just guess the time and see if I make the evening news with a big sign. I mean I've done the roadside thing for the Olympic Torch a couple of times and this is at least that important.

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterKathleen

Oh joy! Oh rapture! You're coming to Dallasish!!! That's my neighborhoodish! I will SOOOO be there.

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterCarol

Umm I feel I'm missing something. I guess it will be somewhere on the Indigo website at some point but which stoooore in Toronto I have to know! And there's like 10 here!

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered Commentermystic_eye

ST. LOUIS!!!! WOOT WOOT!!! Thank you for planning such an ambitious tour. You guys are teWRECKfic and I can't wait to see you! Will people be camped out all day to get in? Should I just take off work that day to go pitch a tent and wait for the doors to open? I envision a line of wreckies backed up several blocks to get a chance to hang out with you - we all feel like you're our best friends. :-D
I'm sure my daughter in Houston will be equally excited to see you. She is an English teacher and often uses your site for material (of what NOT to do) in class.
Have safe travels on your caffeine rush! See you in a couple of months!

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJillie B

YAY!! You're coming to Boston! I couldn't make it last time, but I'm gonna try my darnedest to get there this time! And only a short two hour drive from me in Maine! Woot!

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMelissa

Woo-hoo Canada! Wish you were heading more into the wilds of Canada (like where I live), but I guess we'll take what we can get.

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterSolitary Diner

You LIVE in Florida and yet you can't find time to stop somewhere in our lovely state? Does that mean all of us Sunshine State Wreckies have to get together and throw icing-covered-flotsam at your front door?

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMel

Yay you're coming to Boston(ish)! although you spelled Brookline wrong :P

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterwaffles

You're coming to Houston! Huzzah!!!

Wait, which B&N? *confused*

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMeredith

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMonica

Woo-hoo! So glad you're coming to Chicagoish! Such a wonderful area, Chicagoish. I was born and raised in Chicagoish. Here's a tip: the locals refer to it, in the native language of Chicagoish, as Chicagoland. ^_^

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMonica

Florida?? None in Florida?? Your home state and mine????? I may have to make a CCC (patooie!!) in disgust!!!

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterlatinmamasita

Yay Memphis! So excited! I am crying salty, salty tears of joy.

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterC

Be sure to visit Calgary on your next tour!

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterKK

I'm hoping to purchase several copies of your new book to give as holiday gifts (apparently the day you are coming to my city since it is the release date) and attending the tour stop. If I have several copies with me, how many are you willing to sign? (I'm thinking between 3 & 5 right now- not like hundreds) The book itself will be a great gift, but I think it would be greater with the author's signature. :)

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJennifer

screw Europe, COME TO AUSTRALIA!!!!!

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered Commentermoi!

Texas gets more than one stop but you couldn't spend one minute in Minnesota? We've got The Mall of America, for cryin' out loud! It would have been a perfect place to meet and greet at least! All righty then, no cake for you, by golly.

September 9, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAlikat

September 9, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJoan

Yay, Pittsburgh!! I'm so glad you're going to be at the B&N in Homestead, so I'll be able to come!
