What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Sunday Sweets: You Can't Handle The Cute!

Hi. I'm Jen, and I'm addicted to cute.

What can I say? Sometime I just NEED to see a baby dragon holding a beach ball surrounded by pastel pennant bunting.

(By Choko Late)

Ahhhh. That's the stuff.

(Even the letters are adorable. How?!)

Needless to say, I heartily approve of cutesying up my favorite characters, like Bats and Wonder Woman here:

(By Little Pieces of Heaven, found here)

Cutest crime-stoppers evah! And how perfect are their colors together?

I know some folks find the button eyes on Lalaloopsy dolls a little too Coraline-esque, but I'm completely nuts for them:

(By Jussra Soares and found here - but no website is listed. Anyone have it?)

Squee! Srsly, it's all I can do not to start binge-buying these every time I'm near the toy aisle. And would you look how sweet that quilted pattern is? With the little tape measure and sewing basket and spools? And that fabric name plaque on the wall with the birthday girl's name is super fun.

I think these next two need no introduction:

(By The Cupcake Maker)

...but that's Despicable behavior.

If you're not smiling right now, you should get your emotion chip checked. And is anyone else expecting to see that goggle strap snap back at any second? I feel like I could reach out and twang it, it's so perfect!

So. Buzz Lightyear. Could he be any cuter?

Why yes, yes he could:

(By Don Buciak II)

I will never stop being amazed at what Don can do with just buttercream - NEVER. (Yes, that's all icing!) Think you can't have a show-stopping sculpted cake without fondant? Then hit that link up there and go see more of Don's work - but hang on to your socks.

I've determined there aren't nearly enough Rainbow Brite cakes in the world. Happily Amy here is working to fix that:

(Submitted by Kate F. and made by Amy A-S)

YES. I love her ponytail, and the rainbow stars. Of course, you do realize I'll be spending the next hour searching ebay for my old doll with the crinkly holographic skirt, right? And a Twink in every color, so I can make a Twink rainbow? They'll look perfect next to my Gremlin and Animaniac dolls.
Aw yeeeah.

And now, the cutest knight in all the land:

(By Tal Tsafrir's Cakes)

Accompanied by the cutest dragon, perched atop the cutest castle. In fact, I'm pretty sure that's the Kingdom of Cute, right there.

Sure, Hello Kitty is already pretty darn adorable - but EVERY girl looks better with nerdy glasses and a little plaid bow, amirite?

(Submitted by Kristen R. and made by Alena's Sweets)

Speaking of which, I've always thought the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles would be more fun as girls - haven't you?

(By Little Cherry Cake Company)

And girls who like cupcakes just as much as they like their pizza, too - because those are the kind of teenage mutant ninja turtles *I* want to hang out with. Cowabunga, dudettes!

Er, you may want to cover your ears, 'cuz I'm about lose my adorbz-loving mind over this next one:

(By Chef Sam)

TIGGER!!! It's all. About. That. Tigger. And the balloons. Yes. I want that little Tigger, holding the balloons, on my desk, IMMEDIATELY.

Please? [Bambi eyes]

I'll admit that not all robots are cute, but for every murderous Dalek or Cylon there's a chipper little sweetie like this, just waiting to bloop at you cheerfully and offer to play a game of checkers:

(By Cheirinho De Coisa Boa)

That smile! And his eyes light up!

Well, my friends and fellow addicts, I hope you've gotten your fill of cute Sweets today - but if not, I think a happy little penguin wearing an aviator cap and balancing on a circus ball should do the trick:

(By Pauline Bakes The Cake)

[collapses from the cute]

Yep, we're done here.

Happy Sunday, everyone!

EXTRA BONUS SWEETNESS: Our friends Rick and Sasha over at cakelava - whose work we've featured a lot over the years here on Sweets - just wrote a fun book called Extreme Cakeovers:

And even better, they have three copies to give away to you guys! So just comment below to enter, and we'll announce the three lucky winners in tomorrow's post. Good luck!

WOW !! What a way to start a (7:10 a.m. Alaska Daylight Time) day !! What could be better ? A cup of coffee and some smiles while looking at those cakes :)

September 29, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJanice in Alaska

Although I don't like the taste of fondant, I loved the letters on Pablo's cake, too! Thanks for Don's site - he does magic with buttercream, and that's my favorite kind of icing.

September 29, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterRachel T.

Thank you for your posts! It never fails to make me smile, be it wrecky or fantastic.

September 29, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterAnnie

I should tell you how much I love Sunday Sweets. I look forward to it each week. The Pooh one is my favorite I'm a big fan of all things Pooh related.

September 29, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterLinda Prentice

These cakes are so adorable! Rainbow Brite...Girl Turtles...and the list goes on. I can't have a favorite. I just can't. The book looks awesome and I hope I win. But, I will be on the lookout for it just in case.

September 29, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSaraV

ACK! I must have cake Minions! And I love the trend of redoing characters as girls - yay Fem-TNMTs! (Someone needs to come up with something less clunky)

September 29, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSusanD

September 29, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJessica H

These are the most adorable cakes i have ever seen!! How could anyone cut into them and eat them though? I would put them on display under glass domes in my house and just stare at them all day, trying not to pass out from the adorableness.

September 29, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterTeacher

Now, I'll be singing pooh and trigger songs all day! T. I. Double gger!

September 29, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterBetsy

RAINBOW BRITE!!!!!!! Oh my goodness, I'll never forget the Rainbow Brite cake my mom made for me as a kid! I think she'll have to make a return for my 30-something birthday next summer!

And the book looks awesome! Would love to win a copy of that!

September 29, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterLyss

as always, these are super-cute, but i found the lalaloopsy amazingly adorable!
also, so glad to see a cake on here that ISN'T covered in fondant, like the buzz lightyear one. that clearly screamed "royal icing", but still managed to have the same amount of depth and detail that the oh-so-moldable and foldable fondant cakes do. (maybe there's a "no fondants allowed" sunday sweets in the future?)
great job all!

September 29, 2013 | Unregistered Commentermickeyp415

these cute cakes inspire me to try to make and decorate one today!

September 29, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJo

so cute!! i love them all!

September 29, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterkendra s.

I love the Buzz Lightyear and Winnie-the-Pooh cakes! Also, the robot cake on the book cover is so much better than some of the Sandra Lee semi homemade cakes of yore.

September 29, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterCameron D.

Allow me to join you in love of cartoons from my childhood--OMG Rainbow Brite and Ninja Turtles!!!!
Also, if I could get my niece into Pororo instead of creepy Pingu, I might be a happy camper.
Also also, I would love that book.

September 29, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterAmy

loveee the tmnt cake! my 3 yr old daughter would go wild for that!

September 29, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterstefanie s

Minions! (And Jen, I blame you for my minion addiction, because you're the one who reminded me it's okay to embrace my geeky kid side, even to the point of spending the week carefully cutting paper to put in the back of the little display case I made for my minion fighter pod figures). And that book would come in awfully handy for me. So win, win today. Even if I don't win.

September 29, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterDeirdre

That book looks awesome!

September 29, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterdiana

Another set of wonderful Sunday Sweets!

Long time lurker, first time commenter! I had to comment to get a chance at that awesome book - this is by far one of my favorite websites, and I count down the days until Sunday Sweets. Today was definitely sweet, thanks so much! :)

September 29, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterDawn

Love these so much! Thanks for the cute!

September 29, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterFaith H

That post was very nearly a cuteness overdose! I can't choose a would be like Sophie's Choice!
I clicked Don Buciak's link and, "Oh my word!!!" I think you are mistaken. Those aren't cakes. They are works of ART! His Peter Rabbit one with the pink flowers nearly pushed me over the edge of cuteness and then I saw his Goldfish Cracker cake. Jen, did you see the Goldfish Cracker cake????? Squee!!! It's amazing how something with such a simple concept can have such impact. I want to hang it on my wall. Thanks for sharing your addiction. I now feel like I need a 12 step program for cuteness. :p

September 29, 2013 | Unregistered Commentersandy

I am dying over the Winnie the Pooh cake. Love me some adorable Eeyore!

September 29, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterRachel B

Cakeovers!! I have nine kids, I neeed that book! My kids read cake wrecks every Sunday and say "Mom! I want that one!" I'm supposed to make a millennium falcon by tomorrow. AK!

September 29, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJacJac

Cakes have me thinking of Renaissance Faire knights and my friend's quilt group. Well done with cuteness!

I would love a copy of Extreme Cakeovers! How fun!

September 29, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterKim F.

I'm glad you separated those dragon cakes. I had just enough time to recover from my squee-fest for the next one!

September 29, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterCandice

I loooove the rainbow bright cake. It's so adorable. I actually squealed out loud when I scrolled down.

September 29, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterDanielle H

I think I might need to order that Minion cake for a friend's baby shower. I'd make it myself, but I don't want to be featured on this site.... :D

September 29, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterCait

I love seeing all-buttercream cakes. Restores my faith, somehow. And I would LOVE a copy of that book. I'm always hitting the candy/cookie/chip aisle for fun cake additions. :-)
Oh, and I want that penguin, STAT!! He is too adorable for mere words, and the squeal I squealed was heard by all the dogs in the neighborhood, heehee.

September 29, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJasry

Darth Maryn's birthday is coming up in just a couple of months and frankly, if I don't win the book I may just go out and buy it. I have so many more find memories of the cakes made with love at home than the store bought ones :)

September 29, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterRobynR

I love Sunday Sweets! And I would love an Extreme Cakeovers book :)

Was Rainbow Brite fondant on top of buttercream? Looks fantastic! I, too, would like to see more fondant-free cakes. The TMNT cake was uber squee!!!!
