Artsy Fartsy

[adjusting bow tie] "Welcome, gentle beings, to the grand opening of SplüüRff.

[faint applause]

"All of our works here tonight have been created by world-renowned artists, and are available for sale for far more than you can possibly afford. So, let's begin.

"Our first piece was painted by artist Noh Wei using traditional oils. Her inspiration was taken from the ocean, mother earth, and the organic nature of the gore splatters in Bikini Slasher Kill Zone 4: Revenge of the Waxers"

Christie%2BR%2B.%2Bow%2B.%2Bcolorful.jpg

"It sells for $490,000.

"Our next piece comes from craftsman Joques Onyu. Joques spent three years in isolation to focus on this masterpiece, during which time he subsisted solely on prune juice and Ranch flavored Bugles."

Aimee+W+.+ow+.+colorful.jpg

"It sells for $893,000.

"The much lauded Yuki Grohs is known for her daring and unconventional techniques. This piece, for example, was constructed using squeeze mayo while the artist was blindfolded and spinning around on a wheelie office chair."

Alyssa+H+.+ow+.+swirl+generic.jpg

"It sells for $10 million.

"Another avant-garde darling of the art world, the 'Do' Dude uses his trademark combination of gold leaf and 'personal bodily secretions' to both shock and intrigue viewers."

holly%2Blaf.ow.golden%2Bpoop.jpg

"This mixed-media masterpiece sells for 11.2 million.

"Please feel free to browse the rest of our gallery, where you'll find even more distinguished masterworks, such as:

Speaking of art, anyone remember these?

(Spirograph Design Tin Set)

This is a smaller "travel size" kit that's only $11, but there's also a big deluxe set for a few dollars more. I'm tempted to get one with some neon gel pens and relive my middle school years. :p

Sunday Sweets: A Disney Movie Marathon, Part 2

Ok, so let's get back to our classic Disney movie marathon!

It's Bambi's mom! Ack! All the feels.

Disney sure knows how to play the mom card. Remember that scene in Dumbo? o.0 But don't worry; this Dumbo cake is nothing but happy:

Gotta love those bright circus colors.

I spy some hand-painting on this Pocahontas cake:

...but whether they used all the colors of the wind is up for debate. ;)

Here's one from John's favorite:

Lady and the Tramp!

With so many big sculpted cakes out there, it's nice to see such a brilliant 2D design for single tiers. Check out the ruffles on the table cloth, the texture of their fur, and the spaghetti noodles! Plus the cake has Lady's collar wrapped around the outside edge. GENIUS.

We've devoted entire posts to Alice in Wonderland before, because it has inspired SO MANY amazing cakes. And here's one more:

Look at all the detail! From the dormouse to the card doing a backflip to Alice stuck in the side "rabbit hole." Hee!

The Jungle Book still has some of Disney's best songs - so let's all hum "The Bear Necessities" while we look at this next cake, k?

Humhumhum, HUM HUM HUM ha HUMMM...

(That waterfall is stunning. And the palm trees! Look at the palm trees!)

I'm not sure I've ever seen Tick-Tock the croc look so happy:

Perhaps that floating hook has something to do with it. :D

Speaking of lovable villains, anyone remember Madame Mim?

She's from The Sword in the Stone, and looks pretty fabulous made out of sugar, don't you think?

I think we should call this one "Pinocchio's Birthday":

What a cool concept! And so many details! I'm in awe of the tools, the wood shavings, and the gold detailing on the books spines.

I know we had a Wreck It Ralph cake last time, but these Sugar Rush Racers MUST BE SHARED:

Squee!!

And finally, I thought I'd end with two more Frozen treats, since I just can't decide between them:

Check out that sugar sculpting!

And then there's this one, starring Olaf:

So much to love here, but that lacy snowflake airbrushing on the cake board really brings it to the next level of gorgeous. SO COOL. (pun intended)

Hope you guys enjoyed our extended movie marathon! Happy Sunday!

Here's a Disney Sweet even I can make:

Mini Mickey Waffle Maker

Plus I like how the waffle bits in the middle make it look like the Spaceship Earth logo with Mickey Ears. BONUS.
