What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Sunday Sweets to Make Henson Proud

I have a huge statue of Kermit the Frog occupying the corner of my desk. It has light-up fireflies behind Kermit and plays the Rainbow Connection. I love it.

I mention this by way of introduction to today's featured NON-Wreck, made by Heather Haynes of Clarksville, Indiana:

Yes, it's all the characters from the Muppet Show, modeled in fondant, on cake.

The Electric Mayhem is looking mighty groovy.

And I love Camilla the chicken. Say, have I mentioned that my hubby John does a fantastic Swedish Chef impersonation? Seriously. If you ever meet him, ask him to say "Bork bork bork" for you. It's downright uncanny.

Of course a Muppet Show cake would never be complete without their in-house peanut gallery, Statler and Waldorf. Still, I'm guessing even those two curmudgeons wouldn't find a thing to complain about on this sweet creation.

I don't have any info on baker Heather; I only know this cake won the blue ribbon at the 2007 Kentucky State Fair. If anyone has more info or a website for her, be sure to let me know.

Also, there's a nice slide show of these and more photos here. Thanks to all of you readers who sent in the link!

I saw this cake in person at the fair. The pictures do not do it justice--it was simply amazing. I know I looked at it for over thirty minutes!

Beautiful cake! I could never eat it though.

I love "The Rainbow Connection". I also love "The Muppet Christmas Carol". I wonder if anyone's ever done that for a Christmas cake?

I love this cake!
I live in KY and I now have made it my mission to hunt this gal down and have her make one of these cakes for me!
I just can't believe the likenesses. This is the most awesome cake I have ever seen!

September 28, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterHEATHER

Wow, that is an incredible amount of work! I LOVE the Muppets!

September 28, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterSheri in Rehoboth

I also admired (and took loads of pics) of this cake at the fair last year! It's SO amazing! Heather, if you are out there, you can charge any amount for a cake even half this good and my husband will get it for me for next year's b-day, at my command! We were anxiously trying to guess which cake at this year's KY State Fair was Heather's. (Perhaps the garden gnomes? Anyone know?) This is the best cake ever.

Since nobody else has mentioned it so far, I will comment that this awesome cake is based on the gala sequence from The Great Muppet Caper. Kermit and Piggy are posed in a pretty good recreation of the fountain that Miss Piggy does her synchronized swimming number in. (Minus the fountain part, probably because Piggy still has her evening gown on.) The outfits are all exactly right. She must have watched the sequence many times to get it so right.

Holy Moly! That is one fabulous cake! The Chef is my fave character too.

September 28, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterBlythe

Fabulous cake! I enjoyed the comments too. Perhaps you should rename the post: For the Lovers, the Dreamers and Me.

September 28, 2008 | Unregistered Commenternancy b

She definitely channeled Jim Henson on this. They are spot on replicas. In marzipan?!!? wow.

"We just watched The Muppets Take Manhattan last night!"

"Well, they finally made it to Broadway..."
"Yeah, I've got tickets!"
"Are they good seats?"
"Yeah; they're for the next train out of town!"

LOL, Statler and Waldorf...

I found this website:

One of the commenters on the post about the Muppet cake claims to be the baker's future sister-in-law, and stated that the baker, Heather Hayes, is not a professional, baking is just her hobby, but she hopes to one day open a bakery.

NIMAL ANIMAL ANIMAL!!!!!!!!! Love that cake its just way too cool!

September 29, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterLaura ~Peach~

What a wonderful creation...but how could anyone destroy it by eating it?? I'm in awe of the person who made that cake!

September 29, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterVH

Oh. my. GOSH! I love the Muppets! I love cake!! I love this blog! Put it all together... oh, man, I think I'm hyperventilating out of the excitement of it all. This is one freakin' sweet cake. Heather, whoever and wherever you are, I bow down to you!!!

September 29, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterSariah

That is AWESOME. Also, I need to know where you got a Kermit with light up fireflies that plays Rainbow Connection. I mean seriously, I NEED to know this.

Statler and Waldorf would probably manage to complain about the cake being fattening if they couldn't object to the artistry. Just amazing.

(Hmm. Netflix... now that I've graduated and passed the bar and have a job, i.e. now that I have more income AND more time, it might just be time for a Netflix sub. Muppet Show would be high on the list.)

September 29, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterKansas girl

That is fantastic!!!

September 29, 2008 | Unregistered Commenterlyzzydee

That. is so. AWESOME!!
The muppets have always held a special place in my heart, and seeing such an amazingly made homage to them is the coolest thing ever.
On a related note, it would have been a crime NOT to have put the Swedish chef on the cake. A crime I say!
Great to see some real cake talent on this site once in a while. It gives me faith in humanity.
YAAAAAAAYY! *flails!

September 29, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Love this! The baker is a true artist. I couldn't eat it, it's such a work of art!

September 29, 2008 | Unregistered Commenterjencoe

I absolutely adored the muppets growing up and I still love them!!! Especially the two old grumpy men! Thanks for the smile!!

September 29, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterBeckster

This cake is absolutely magical, I love it!

Just thought I'd share this with everyone: there is a Swedish Chef Google (i.e. Google Bork). It's one of google's funny language things, it's just like regular google, except that the opening google page is written as if by Swedish Chef. Your searches all come back in regular English though, so funny! Here's the link:

September 29, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterKaye

LOVE it - what a wonderful job on every single character! I wouldn't be able to eat it (don't like fondant that much) but wow!!! I'm with you on the chicken - so awesome!

September 29, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterDea

My fav has always been Dr. Bunsen Honeydew and Beaker the intrepid assitant. I see they are on one side of the cake and Beaker is surprisingly in one piece.

Usually Dr B blows him up.

September 29, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterMary Kay

Amazing, I couldn't draw that well, let along make those characters out of fondant!

September 29, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterEx-LondonMagnetGirl

The cake is awesome! Muppets are awesome! They need to cancel most of the crap that passes for kid TV these days and rerun the Muppets and Looney Tunes!

but I see one mistake - Floyd, the bass player in Dr. Teeth's band, is supposed to be pink

September 29, 2008 | Unregistered Commenterphillygirl64 fiance does a pretty good impression of "bork! Bork! Bork!" too. Maybe he and your hubby can have a contest!

This cake is amazing. WOW. My favorite is of course the chicken.

I live about 3 minutes away from Clarksville, Indiana. Possibly she works for one of our local bakeries! I will definitely be looking out for her name from here on out...

September 29, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterMichelle Baker

PS - to the person who asked how someone from Indiana enters the KY state fair: Clarksville is about 5 minutes away from Louisville, KY, which is where the state fair is held. They don't limit entries to residents of Kentucky. Just FYI!

September 29, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterMichelle Baker

For the one or two of you who have inquired about my Kermit statue: first off, you can't have it. :)

Secondly, my hubby got it a few years ago from The Art of Disney Store at the park, and it's called a "big fig". I don't know if they still carry them there, but I did see one over on ebay. Hope that helps.

September 29, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterJen

This is faaaaBBBBBUlous! I am a huge muppet fan! HOw awesome!

September 29, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterDawn

Totally amazing cake. I am so impressed, and I can't believe that she does this as a hobbyist! Such talent!

For all you fellow Muppets fans, if you ever go to Anaheim, CA, try to get to California Adventure (adjacent to Disneyland) and do the Muppet Theatre attraction. I was practically squealing!

September 29, 2008 | Unregistered Commenterraiuchka

That cake is rad. I heart the rainbow connection....

WOW, this is an awesome cake, well done! I admire you for your patience.

Cakes and baked good that are show items don't get eaten unless they are being entered as a taste item. At our state fair (which is still very agricultural and 4H-ish), there are many items that are submitted for taste contests. Then there are the ones such as wedding cakes, show cakes like this one etc, that are judged solely on the decorating, elaboration, constancy of theme, difficulty.

They're not cut into and eaten. And considering that they are baked and sometimes semi-constructed beforehand, and then they usually sit in a (dusty fairground) Exhibit hall for the 2 weeks of the fair....they're not anything you'd want to eat anyway.

September 29, 2008 | Unregistered Commenterholly

OMG, are you kidding me with that thing?!? that is nothing short of a-freakin'-mazing! the only thing though... i'd REALLY have to struggle with actually cutting in and eating it.

and thank god she didn't include those rats that show up in the later muppet movies (particularly the one w/ the jewel heist in london)...
