What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Teaming With Wreckage

The only thing I know about sports is that hitting the man in black over the head with a rock is NOT very sportsmanlike. Still, even *I* can see something's off with these sports team cakes.

I mean, c'mon, who takes a lovely sunburned R.O.U.S. like this:

...and turns it into Disney's Mushu, twisted up like a pretzel?

P.S. For you non-Disney folk, this is Mushu:

This next one is much better, though:

Yes, I lied. Get used to disappointment.

How about a simple star?

Think it'll work?

Correct answer: "It would take a miracle."

At this point it's just morbid curiosity keeping you going, isn't it? [nodding] Yeah. I'm right there with ya.

[blinking] Hoo boy. Anyone else have a bad feeling about this?

Oh. Well, I guess it could be worse..

It's worse, it's worse!

Hey, you know those videos online where you see the freight train headed for the tanker truck full of gasoline, and part of you is cringing and thinking what a horrible tragedy is about to occur, and the other part is all, "Oh man, this is gonna be GOOD!"

Well, allow me to introduce a tanker truck full of gasoline:

Now, heeeere comes the freight traaaaaiiiin!! (Choo choo!)

To be fair, it now occurs to me that the original Broncos logo looks like a thestral, too.

Ah, so many Princess Bride references, I love it. But, um what is that THING in the last wreck doing? Trying to cover it's privates because it's embarrassed? Well, it should be, shouldn't it?

November 30, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterTrevor

Ah, the Princess Bride quotes. They make me smile. :)

November 30, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterKatalina

A blue frog?? A BLUE frog?? A blue FROG?? Nope, I see no resemblance whatsoever to the logo. Are you sure that tanker truck wasn't full of radioactive materials that transformed the logo on impact? That's the explanation that works for me.

Congratulations! Today you made me spit on my keyboard. That Broncos cake... Loved the train wreck too. Kudos to an artist such as yourself.

November 30, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterLet Them Eat Cake

Loved the Princess Bride references! Now I'm going to go have to watch that movie...again...for the 3 millionth time.

November 30, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Oh, and I'm sure everyone will say this, but I loved the Princess Bride quotes.

WV: auteduck--when you see the train coming, you auteduck.

November 30, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterKeeley

Can't stop giggling... perhaps I can comment later.

November 30, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterFluffy Cow

Ahhh...The day could end now and I would be happy because someone quoted "The PRincess Bride." Now, if only they weren't highlighting such hideous cakes, it would be perfect. I guess we can't always get want...if only we had a wheelbarrow and a holocaust cloak, now that would be something.

These wrecks definitely fall in the category of 'classic blunders'...thanks for the Princess Bride references!

November 30, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterKEI

As for the last one does Miss Piggy know that Grover and Kermit have alove child?

November 30, 2010 | Unregistered Commentertina

all I did was laugh.

November 30, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterStella

A Razorback isn't a's a pig.

November 30, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

I know others have said it and will say it, but I can't resist, given today's theme:

"Dear God, what is that THING?!"

Hehe. Awesome.

November 30, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterPunk

I must concur with the 9:34 Anon- the Broncos logo does look a bit like a spectacularly colored thestral.

Given how the team has been performing this season (from what I hear) the harrowed deathly mutation on the cake is probably just what the orange and blue thestral should currently look like.

November 30, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAbys

A Razorback is not a ROUS, but that cake might be because it is most definitely not a Razorback...

Now I have another entry for our holiday movie marathon!

November 30, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterRoseAnn

Uh, ma'am? Ma'am?

I said "Horned Toads."

That's "HornED Toads." That's right.

Now, would you please move the toad's hands?

November 30, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterChristian Johnson

I fell out of my chair laughing at the R.O.U.S. reference - GO HOGS!

November 30, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAmanda Mac

To understand the last wreck, it helps to know that Texas Christian University's (TCU's) mascot is the "Horn Frog," and its school colors are purple and white. A "Horn Frog" is the spiny lizard more commonly known as the "Horned Toad" or "Horny Toad," as shown in the official logo (yes, we know it's not really a frog or a toad, but that's what people call it). It used to be very common around Fort Worth, Texas, and still can be found there occasionally.

So you can see how a combination of taking the word "Frog" too literally, poor drawing ability, and a color that was hard to mix resulted in this cake. That in no way excuses it, but you can see how the wreck happened, just as you can see how the gas tanker truck got stalled on the train tracks and ...

November 30, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterGary

heh heh. Ah, the horny toads, er, horned frogs. I had no idea what that friggin' logo was supposed to be, and that's before it was rendered in frosting.

This summer during a cheap-crap-haul at our local Ocean State Job Lot, my daughter dug through a bin of Crocs. She fell in love with a purple and silver pair and wore them home before I noticed that TCU creepy frog printed on the back. I had to google it. I'm guessing their athletic teams are a big deal, but what merchandising genius is ordering toddler-size Crocs? She wore them all summer with pride, until she kicked one off a pier into the ocean. Be free, horney toad. Godspeed.

For any of these to sell - "It would take a miracle"......thanks for the Princess Bride day. Peace....

November 30, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterJean Burke

In related news, have you seen these toasters that imprint your team's logo on bread?

November 30, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterLisa

I don't care much for sports, but The Princess Bride references were hilarious.

I just watched that with my nephew this last Saturday!

November 30, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterKatie

As a Denver Broncos fan, I hate to say that I almost like that particular wreck because it is a fantastic representation of my team's abysmal performance this season. They should be ashamed of themselves, but the Wreckerator should be proud of that cake. Proud, I say!

And "Princess Bride" references for the win!

November 30, 2010 | Unregistered Commenterphantomessj

1) You keep saying that word. I do not think it means what you think it means... Aheh...

2) At least both the "Saints" wreckerators managed to spell it correctly. That's something, right? (sound of crickets chirping)...

3) Okay, then... Well... I find it interesting that both "Saints" wreckerators, appropos of precisely nothing, managed to put a stylish belt on their manglement of the fleur-de-lis.

November 30, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterBADKarma!

Stop it now, and I mean it!

Anybody want a peanut?

November 30, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterMichelle

I can hear each and every Wreckerator saying "As you wish," when they were asked to make these cakes!

WV: caces - how Wreckerators spell cakes.

I never wanted this post to end.

November 30, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterThe Boob Nazi

As a TCU alumni, now living in Denver, you hit me where it hurts this morning. My beloved Horned Frog has been massacred into that blue blob creation. And the Denver Broncos logo? Shame.

November 30, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterKelli

The broncos cake reminds me a lot of this lady/man . . .

just sayin'. . .

November 30, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterLindsay

Love the Princess Bride quotes. Also never thought of the Arkansas Razorbac as an ROUS, but I totally see it now. The more things in life I can relate to the Princess Bride, the better.

November 30, 2010 | Unregistered Commenterzizouandbecks

I woke my puppies up laughing. Thank you Cake Wrecks :)

November 30, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterK

Great post as always, Jen! When you displayed the fleur-de-lis, I expected one to be (unsuccessfully) rendered as a dreaded CCC (ptooie!). Now that would be a wreck of grand proportions.

As for the last wreck, I, too, thought it was a cross between Grover and Kermit - great minds think alike.

November 30, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnne-Marie

Hahaha those are great! Tanker truck cake? INCONCEIVABLE!

November 30, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAmy's Cooking Adventures

The Broncos one looks like a cross between the baby alien at the end of Alien 4: Ressurection and the gremlin on the wing in the Twilight Zone movie. The last one? What the heck?

November 30, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

You keep saying "cake" weckerators. I do no think that word means what you think it means.

wv: derme Derme, Ah do declare, that Horny Toad has been de-horned.

November 30, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

I love Princess Bride!!

While I know it isn't cake related, I am having a free fudge giveaway on my it okay to shamelessly plug it here?

I will give you an extra entry into the contest if you mention you saw this comment on Cake Blogs and came to visit my blog for the first time because you saw it here!!

Crazy wrecks...bad, bad work, but the really important fact is that the Princess Bride quotes made me smile when I seriously needed it. Thanks Jen.

November 30, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterBakingdom

The last one is Grover!

Have fun storming the castle!!!

(I loves me some Princess Bride)

For the second Saints wreck I see, I see... a cartoon Karate man who has earned his Yellow Belt! yeah!

November 30, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

The last one is just ridonkulus. Instead of a horned toad it looks suspiciously like a playing piece from the Ants in your Pants game by Milton Bradley.

November 30, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterDanger Boy

I do believe the Dallas Cowboys wreckerator is a closet trekkie. The mishapen star vaguely resembles the Star Trek logo.

As for the Denver Bronco logo...what IS that?!?

November 30, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Heheheheheheheheheh... Especially funny because I'm a Bronco Fan (rabid - that one hurt). Hubby is a Cowboys fan. And as an Air Force Falcons fan, the TCU was quite funny!

November 30, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterToni W.

For the WIN!!!: Christian Johnson said...

Uh, ma'am? Ma'am?

I said "Horned Toads."

That's "HornED Toads." That's right.

Now, would you please move the toad's hands?

November 30, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterToni W.

That Broncos cake looks like it's trying to withstand the machine. But of course no one can withstand the machine.

Watching them this season has been torture too for this Broncos fan. The Princess Bride quotes make it all feel better.

November 30, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterJennifer

I assume that last one is the love child of Kermit and Grover. Or is that inconceivable?

November 30, 2010 | Unregistered Commenterladycrim

The Broncos one looks exactly like a Scarran from Farscape to me!
