What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

- Jen

To quote Bill Cosby: "Thebere ibis uh fiber in mah mabouth!"

At least, I *think* that's what's happening here.

More specifically: a squirrel with his ears on fire.

But then, I always get off to a Rocky start on Mondays.

Thanks to Jeff G., whose bottom lip is on the floor. I'll take that as a compliment.

There's a sticker on that "cake" that says, "Traditional" … WHAT kind of TRADITION is that… thing celebrating??? Hey, everybody, it's National Set-Your-Hair-On-Fire Day!

Rocky! I get it! I miss the old-timey cartoons :)

August 22, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMargaret

Here's a story about just such a squirrels. Sort of. You can listen to "Squirrel Cop" individually, or listen to the whole episode of This American Life.

August 22, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterGeorge P

I like that it's "traditional"!

August 22, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterBrenda

It's the traditional bunny-ear-bonfire. Duh.

For some reason I can't see the picture, but your description and the comments sure do have me intrigued!

[Editor's note- Sorry about that. We may or may not have possibly fixed it. Maybe.]

August 22, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAmy Dove

I can't really explain why it makes me think of Mojo Jojo from the Powerpuff Girls.

August 22, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterKara

I saw an evil face wearing fruit on its head. But maybe that's just me.

The cake the cake the cake is on fire
The cake the cake the cake is on fire
The cake the cake the cake is on fire
We don't need no water let the wreck burn
Burn wreck burn

August 22, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterScifimom

I thought it was DJ Lance.

August 22, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterbanjobraids

Rocky, cute. Yes, i do remember Rocky and Bullwinkle, and not in a cheesy modern remake.
Back on track. First, I couldn't make out WHAT this cake was supposed to be. When you mentioned your description, I got a bit more of a clue, but it didn't really strike me as a squirell. I thought a chipmunk perhaps, considering the cheek shape, but that's me. If your imagination is as twisted as mine, you can kinda see someone (upside down) having a bad case of 'Ring of Fire' if you get my drift. Maybe I should sleep, I'm seeing things.

August 22, 2011 | Unregistered Commentershikiblade

My 4 yr old son says it's a lobster and a crab. Um......okay..... I think it may be a CCC (ptooeeey!) of a camp fire? If you tilt your head to the right and squint and sing Kumbaya you can see it.

August 22, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterLatinmama

Ha! My husband's name is Rocky and people always say, "Like the fighter?" and I say, "No, like the squirell!"

On a totally non flaming poo CCC note, I just got word that the guy who host the costume friendly church service at Dragon*Con is planning on doing a Princess Bride theme this year and will be dressed as the Dread Pirate Roberts while preaching. "Inconceivable!"

August 22, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterRixie

hahaha yes! Mojo Jojo! I see it Kara! Except his turban is purple isn't it? My first thought was "Seriously, someone find the 'decorator' and ask just what the heck it is ACTUALLY supposed to be please......I've gotta know!

August 22, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterLisa

I still don't understand what I'm looking at up there.

August 22, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJulie R

That cake plus fiber comment hasn't spawned a poo joke yet? I'm shocked.

August 22, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterCat

Silly, Peeps ... it's a campfire cupcake cake (logs, flames). You know, a CCCC. And it's all traditional like. Seeing this makes me long for a CCCC of yore. Nowadays, all you see are modern CCCCs. They just don't make 'em like they used to.

August 22, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterKaren

WTH? No clue what that is supposed to be! and the "traditional" sticker? I think they just took wreck to a whole new level.

August 22, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterHeather

Am i the only one that sees flaming poo?

August 22, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJen Marie

I don't know why, but I keep seeing a very surprised 50's housewife with her hair in an orangey striped towel. She's wearing cat-eye glasses and is probably named Marge or Sheila. If you tilt your head just right, you can see it.

August 22, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterSaraCVT

@Kara - I thought the same thing!!

Mojo Jojo with a colorful turban

August 22, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterCaren

"Okay, rinse." haha I love Bill Cosby:Himself. Now that I've had my first baby, I think about that show a lot and just start giggling.

August 22, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMeagan

um... I thought it was a pile of flaming poo. Oops. Sorry.

August 22, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterdelphine

banjobraids, you made my day! DJ Lance indeed! Now that's all I can see!

August 22, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterLHM430

I don't see a squirrel, but I do see flaming poo!

August 22, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterRSE

I thought it looked like a reindeer with his/her antlers decorated with yellow and orange lights (for Thanksgiving perhaps.) However, I like SaraCVT's explanation, so I'm going with Marge or Sheila.

August 22, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterSuBee

Ok... I just saw some flaming poo. Think the wreckorator maybe had a curry the night before?!

I think this could possibly be the cake version of the ink-blot test. What you see in the pattern reveals something about your personality...

... and I saw flaming poo...

... I wonder what that says about me!

August 22, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterScotland

Clearly a campfire. Not beautiful, but probably yummy (as grocery store cakes go).

August 22, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterValerie Cudnik

Sorry, I've been wracking my brain but I just don't get this one? Bill Cosby? Fiber? Huh?

August 22, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterZizi

No part of this is "Traditional"
Is it poop on fire? No one can know.

August 22, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMarie-Eve Lohman

Looks like DJ Lance to me too

August 22, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterNora

I hear that's what happens when you eat Thai food.

August 22, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterKimberly Chapman

Okay, I don't get the Bill Cosby fiber thing either, but that cake is a deer with his antlers on fire, or maybe they're covered with orange and yellow flowers?

August 22, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterLily

Hehe, the ad at the top of this page has a picture of Smokey the bear and says 'Wildfires burn over 4 million acres a year. What can you do?'
Stop making cakes like this for a start!

August 22, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterCaroline B

It should come in a brown paper bag and be left on someone's porch!

August 22, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterkimberlee

You just referenced my favorite Bill Cosby sketch of all time. Just when I thought you couldn't possibly get any cooler... :D

August 22, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterStephanie

OBKB! Is it sad that when I first saw the headline I immediately heard Bill Cosby's voice? (This is before I scrolled down and saw Jen's comments). Best comedian ever!

August 22, 2011 | Unregistered Commentersundevils95

if they can't make it look like what it's supposed to look like then they shouldn't be making them

August 22, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterCD

I really don't know what that cake is supposed to be but I LOVE your blog. I came over via Lindsey's Better After blog and I don't think I have had such a great chuckle for days! The Elvis cakes really did me in! Thanks for sharing! :)

This is clearly a diagram from a nutritional textbook showing the value of additional fiber in a diet. It depicts not only the process of the fiber (the orange Metamucil-like stuff) moving through the intestines, but also shows the increased “end results” produced by the extra fiber.

August 22, 2011 | Unregistered Commentermel

I thought your Cosbyism translated as "there's fiber in my booty"
C'mon. I know you can see the psyllium in the intestines. Or the unfortunate result of the cat eating tinsel.

August 22, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAuntie Meme

Sooooo.....Campfire? O.o

August 22, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterTuesday

Zizi, this is what the Bill Cosby and Fiber refer to:
But check out the whole show since it is positively hilarious.

August 22, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAnon

Fact: Back when fibre in the diet was first recognized as important to health and there were no regulating rules regarding what constituted "fibre", a number of producers were found to be using wood fibre or paper and calling it "fibre". Filling, too!

August 22, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAnneke (Mudhooks)

Fiber! FIber! You know... Moke, moke, moke!
My favorite Bill Cosby bit, it's awesome! Great reference.

August 22, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMama Bear

Mopping keyboard ... come on people, that's Tigger and .... Poo.

August 22, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterRev W

Traditional? It must have been that fine tradition: "We made 20 dozen cupcakes, the manager only requested two dozen and she'll be here in an hour. Put your thinking cap on."

If only going to the dentist were as funny as Mr. Cosby describes.

August 22, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterCraig's all I can think to say about this...

August 22, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterkristine@SugarBeams

Man, oh, man, I luv me some Cosby! That man knew what he was talking about. Before I had kids, I thought he was just funny. After kids, he's still funny, but in a "preachin' to the choir" sort of way, if that makes sense. (Kids really do use "I don't know" as their go-to excuse for EVERYTHING.)
As for the sad attempt at a campfire in cupcake form, just burn it and put it out of our misery.
