What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

We Moved!

If you can read this, that means you've successfully navigated to our new website. And if you didn't even realize you had navigated to our new website, then we'll just be congratulating ourselves, uh thankyouverramuch.

You RSS subscribers may have noticed some "wonkiness" with our feed. Sorry 'bout that. It should be fully functional from here on out, though, so there's no need to make any changes to your existing subscription.

As for the rest of you, you may want to double check that you've bookmarked us at to avoid the extra few seconds our redirect from blogspot will take you.

John and I (but mostly John) have been working on this move for nearly two months, and we're super excited to be in our new virtual digs. If you haven't been able to see our photos at work in a long time, check again; you should be able to now. Load time should also continue to improve (we're continuing to work on that), although it's already faster for some of you.

If you notice any problems with the site: pictures not showing up, broken links, etc., please let us know by commenting on this post or via e-mail. We'll be hunting down and fixing any last-minute bugs this week, so your help and patience and continued wrecky loyalty are much appreciated.

Under Neat That

Update from john:  Hey everybody! If I sound a bit fuzzy it's because I've had a good 20 minutes of sleep.  But I wanted to answer a couple of questions that I've been getting from you all.

Q.  My RSS Feed!!!  AHHHHHH!  What have you done?!?!

A.  In short, I updated it like 6 times which flooded your feed.  Bwoops.  The good news is, I've checked the feed with every reader I can find and with the exception of Yahoo, everything is swell.  Yahoo doesn't show the first picture of any of the feeds in my reader so I'm guessing it's on their end.

Q.  Where is the older posts button?

A.  You can find older posts at the bottom of the main page in the form of numbered pages.  If you click on an individual post, just above the post are three button for previous post, home, and next post. Pretty cool.

Q.  I can't find you on my blogroll.  Why not?

A.  If you put Cake Wrecks in your blogroll as, it won't show up anymore.  The good thing is you just have to drop the blogspot out of the name and it will work like it used to.

Q.  There's no word verification in the comments!  I love word verification.  Why?

A.  I love it too as it adds a layer of fun to a lot of comments.  The only option with Squarespace is an actual captcha and it adds an annoying step for our commenters so I opted not to use it.

Q.  What happened to the archives?

A.  That's the best we have for now but I'm working on it.  Hopefully, we'll have a fix this week.

Q.  Why is the site loading so slowly?

A.  Mainly, it's the load order of the site.  It's very technical but with blogspot, we were able to change the load order of the site so that the content came up before anything else.  In reality, Squarespace is lightning fast compared to blogspot but I don't yet have the ability to change the load order.  Getting the site faster is my current obsession so I'll be working on it until it's perfect.

Q.  Why doesn't the site load correctly in IE6?

A.  First of all, why are you using IE6?  It's like watching Return of the King on a vcr with a black and white tv.  UPDATE IT!  In the meantime, I'm working with my designer to try to fix the IE6 issues though he did chuckle at me when I asked him about it. (NOTE:  We fixed IE6.  Booya.)

And finally:

Q.  Why did you have to move?

A.  Well, over the past three years, we have received hundreds and hundreds of emails and comments from people who either couldn't view the site or the pictures or both.  Six months ago, our biggest fan, my mom, told me that the public library where she volunteers had blocked blogspot sites from their computers and I realized it was time for a change.  Our new host, Squarespace has excellent customer support, a great design system and they are hosted on Amazon's S3 servers which are the best out there.  With any luck, everyone should be able to see the site again.  Which is pretty cool.

I'll be updating this as I get more questions but I appreciate your patience and general awesomeness.

Congrats on the New Home for Cake Wrecks.

Well, I see no worse when I look in the mirror some mornings LOL. But we did have a cake disaster. For our daughter's baptism, they put Happy Batism!

Why'd you move? What was wrong with the old page?

August 6, 2011 | Unregistered Commentermyself

(looks around curiously) nice place you have here, J & J(thoJ).

I'm kind of excited as Blogger hated me and for several weeks was eating my posts (which is why I stopped writing on my own blogs a few years back). Either that or I was being way too rude but I don't think so.

I'm going to pretend we still have a wv and make up my own occasionally- just because. :D

Though I'm sad to see word verification go, you definitely made the right decision not to use captcha, which is a big stinking pain in the butt. Thanks for looking out for your fans.

wonderful. marvelous. love it. rest up and wreck on. I just gotta get me a phone with a camera because my Tom Thumb grocery store loves to do half cakes, slather them in a horrid color and call it a kids cake. maybe if I sneak my little digital camera into my purse...

Everything works great from my end. Clear and fast! It took courage to make the change, but will be well worth it before long. Congratz!

August 6, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterLauralee

Cohgardutitations! You got a new domain! There is one thing that bothers me though, the archives on the right. I like the old version better where, when you wanted to look at the blog posts for, say, August 2010, there would be a little drop down thing where I could pick whichever one I wanted to read.

Now, I'm just redirected to the actual blog posts, and it bothers me.

August 6, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMe

Congrats on the move!

B-b-but...what about the Cake Wrecks song? IT DOESN'T WORK ANYMORE! The rap portion is ruined. I am saddened.

But other than that, congrats! It was a well-done move. *clapclapclap*

Frist - ossum site. ossum new home. tanks.

third - the archive section used to have helpful little drop-down arrows so you could navigate to a specific post on a given month. where did those go? if i promise to send sprinkles can i have them back?

If people are upset about the wv, how about we all just start making up our own? I'll start by randomly mashing my keyboard (a la Homer: )

Lol@the cake. Good luck :D

August 7, 2011 | Unregistered Commentermindy1

I have been reading through the archive in chronological order, and because I'm only new to the site I'm only up to October 2010. I scroll to the bottom of the page and press Newer Entries, which is all good, except now, once the new page has loaded, a few seconds later it tries to redirect me to your new home page. So I have to sit over the address bar and hit Stop so I can continue to read the older entries.
I love te site and I hope to be caught up to current entries soon =)

August 7, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterCarlz

OK, I didn't have time to read everything that others said, but from the FAQ above, i didn't find an answer...

I noticed while reading Sweets this morning that I can't click on the pictures to make them bigger and see detail.... I want to see details! Especially of the good ones, but ya'll know the wrecks are better bigger, too! :-D

Just wanted to let ya'll know that.

August 7, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterstaxia

The redirect worked fine, but I have a comment about the links to other posts. It is something that I've noticed on lots of blogs and it bugs me.

The link to other posts is labeled "Next 2 Entries" on your blog, and just "Next" on other blogs. When you go to the "Next" page, you have a "Previous" button to take you back to the first post. That is logical from a navigation perspective to follow your navigation trail, but it is not logical from a chronological perspective. The "Next 2 Entries" are really the "Previous 2 Entries", that is, the entries from the past, not the future.

Is there anyway that you could fix that? I suppose I could pose the same question to the other blogs I visit.

Other than that, I don't see any issues.

In closing, Congratulations on your move. From my point of view, there is no difference, and that's a good thing!

August 7, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterbelphebe

I would love to see threaded comments (so you can reply directly to a previous comment). Is that an option on the new site?

August 7, 2011 | Unregistered Commentersunnycyclist

Well done on such a smooth change over!

Redirect worked fine. Everything shows up OK on my Vista/FF 3.6.8, and on my laptop (MBP OS 10.6.8/Safari 5.0.5) it was super fast. (Figured I'd check on both home computers... all that's left is to check the work one. Which is XP and probably IE6 [sigh])

It's too bad about the WV, those were fun. But if it means that those unfortunate souls who were having trouble seeing the site are no longer deprived of their daily CW fix, all is good.

My only thoughts are: the comments are showing up as white on medium blue, which could be a problem for those with vision problems who need the high contrast of black on white. And the posts are spread out more now than they used to be-- a lot more scrolling. While the new system for inputting names is great (fewer anonymouses!), I see that a few people haven't noticed that the names are in the bottom right corner and have commented on the "missing" names; can they be moved to the top of our comments?

August 7, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAliza

Congashrualtions on the big move! I have one fairly minor quibble. The carrot jockeys and the buttons for RSS feed, Facebook and Twitter seem to be superimposed over the top corner. They cover the right hand top corner of the post at the top of the page as well as the link for the Cake Wrecks book. It's a little bit distracting. Other than that, I've had no issues and the site looks great!

August 7, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterKate

Can you let me know what browser you're using? It would be very helpful.

August 7, 2011 | Registered CommenterJen

Hey. I just wanted to tell you that on, if you try to view the pictures larger by clicking on them, it does something error-y which I really don't understand (no matter how hard I try). It's not on every post, though (I checked another and that feature works fine), so I don't know if it's a switch thing or just that one post... I guess only time will tell.

In other news, thanks for all the hilarity!

August 7, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMidge

Actually, the old site worked better for me. Is that strange?

August 7, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

I use squarespace for work and I love it.
Ask them about may be something they can do that no one has asked for before now?

(but is there any chance, once you've gotten a WHOLE LOT OF SLEEP, that maybe pretty please we could get the archive list to expand like it used to? I often have to catch up on several days (or even a whole WEEK *gasp*), and it was soooper hard to figure out what I had and hadn't read. It took me, like, two minutes. I totally could have used that time to learn enough about cake decorating to get a job at Stop and Run Away Bakery, but I digress. So, um, please?)

Thanks for the FAQs because this morning I had the following thought, "I know I'm behind on my Reader, but how have I built up 29 missed CakeWrecks!?!?"

August 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterKatrina in Seattle

I love Love LOVE your blogs!
That being said this is confusing me. Over on the right hand side with the months and years it would have a pull down menu of that months posts and I could just click on them. I admit I don't get here everyday, but I do come back and read them all! Maybe it hasn't added that yet? Or will we not be having that feature? Please explain so I can enjoy all of your awesomeness!!!

The site looks great, though I thought your last one looked great as well. I had no problems getting to the site because you are in my Facebook feed. : )

Missy : )

P.s. Technology and I are not besties so the most simple explanation of how to find these posts in the future would be best. : )

August 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMissy

THANK YOU!!! <-for the archives being listed out, and for being amazingly awesome, and for not getting any sleep. I dunno why that last one, but I'm pretty sure it is true, so there you go.

And I'm sorry I posted what a bunch of others already had - I didn't know there was a second page of comments. :o I'z embarassed, Sanks again!

August 9, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJude

OK, Jen - new site looks great! Now it's time to update your link to Cake Wrecks from Epbot (I often read Epbot first, then click on the link to get here - and it sent me to the old site). Congratuikjsnkjnsd;gouyhn on the move!

August 9, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterKate K.

FWIW, the site is loading a lot faster for me (Ubuntu/Chrome)!

I hate word verification. Glad it's gone!

Should not have looked at this page while my daughter was behind me... Guess what she now wants for her birthday party? "That kind of cake with balloons on it!"

How do I ask her aunt to make her a deliberately ugly cake?

August 12, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAdelle

The new site works ok for me now, although Squarespace seemed to be having issues last night.

And congraduations on the new book, too!

August 17, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAaron of Minneapolis

Ironically, I could see the site at the office before, but Squarespace is blocked at work. I miss you guys. (Clearly my employers are anti-pastry-related-humor, woe.)

August 24, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterNSW

Ahh, so this is why Cake Wrecks disappeared from my feed reader! (Google). I did have to re-subscribe for it to show up.
