What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

- Jen

Head Scratchers

Fellow wreckies, you will never in a million years believe what this cake is supposed to be:

Go on. Try to guess. I'll wait.

Did you guess a buck-toothed snake?

Did ya? Did ya didyadidyahuh?

'Cuz that's not it.

Here, I'll give you a hint. It's the same thing THESE are supposed to be:

(Pay no attention to my snazzy photoshopping; I had to take out a piece of flotsam that might give it away.)

So now you're wondering what a buck-toothed eel has to do with a leprechaun's pots of gold.

Good question.

Ah - but the plot is about to thicken!

Much like these mashed potatoes.

And yes, this is also the same thing those other things are supposed to be.

Ok, if you haven't figured it out by now, here's the clincher:

All clear now?

Ok, ok, then THIS one will do it for sure:

Or maybe I'm just messing with your head.

(So that's, you know, coming along.  I've been working with a vocal coach. Which, come to think of it, doesn't make much sense when I TYPE everything...)

Thanks to Zack Z., Jayme H., Jason C., Colin G., & Melissa K. for the boot to the heads.

I was thinking hockey until I got to the 4th one. Then the last one reaffirmed hockey. But that 4th one is an outlier messing things up - it sort of looks like an upside-down football goalpost...

A Kids in the Hall AND Dr. Horrible reference in the same post? I loved your blog before, but now I LOVE LOVE LOVE it! I have to regularly contain my snorts of laughter at work, so big thanks for the chuckles!

January 31, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterCarey

I... I don't know.

I'll just go with the football theme. But if that's the case, I'm frightened.

Also- I wasn't aware Dr Horrible was a Cake Wrecks fan.

January 31, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterHannah

I'm going with...
#1 A wildly grinning goose
#2 A feuding pumpkin patch (line down the middle to indicate 'This side is my side, that side is your side')
#3 A Smurf on some really, really bad acid
#4 A... football helmet! Yes.
#5 ...Is that supposed to be a shoe?

...Yeah. I see everyone else commenting about football helmets. Only one of these looks even remotely like it could be. XD The sad thing is, everyone else is probably right.

January 31, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterLibby

That last one smells like cumin.

January 31, 2012 | Unregistered Commentergeeky Heather

I love Dr. Horrible's Sing along Blog!!!!!

January 31, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMelody

The last one struck me as being a feminine hygene product... perhaps as a "Welcome to Womanhood" puberty celebratory cake?

January 31, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAlyssa

My initial guess on the first one was an albino flamingo. Although by the second one I had guessed football helmets... perhaps these designs explain why there are so many mTBIs (aka concussions) in football. And do I suspect a CCC(patooie!) on that first one?

Sharyn - I concur with the violent swans. I was once bitten by a swan as I sat on the edge of the lake at Furman University gazing at the beautiful landscape. Unbeknownst to me, an apparently very hungry black swan was silently sneaking up on me (gliding soundlessly on the water, in that graceful manner of swans) and tried to take a chunk out of my leg. Thankfully I was there for music camp in that go-round, and not soccer camp, and therefore my legs were not essential.

January 31, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAnna B

Football hellmets, yeah. But that last one... I thought it someone's... personal parts, who also had strange taste in tattoos.

January 31, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMumsykat

While the football helmet attempts are humorous, the geek in me is more entertained by the Dr. Horrible and Boot to the Head references. Love it!

January 31, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterCarol

I thought number four was Hannibal Lecter in that cage mask thingy: "Hello Clarice, are you ready for some football?"

January 31, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterSuBee

Those are football helmets?! D:

January 31, 2012 | Unregistered Commentermindy1

Honest to god, I thought the first one was supposed to be basketball hoop. When I saw the next one, I thought, "oops, wrong sport.' But the pink thing? Looks like a very elegant maxi pad.

January 31, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMelonie

The first one is either a football helmet or an armored nun's wimple.

(Obligatory squee for Dr. Horrible)

January 31, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterChristi

I guess it's a testament to our loyalty to Jen if we can look at the first cake and not only immediately know what it is, but see where the post is going...and still laugh! :oD

January 31, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterWendy

The first one is obviously a sock puppet made from a tube sock with a button eye sewn on! So cute! ;)

January 31, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterNekussa

Happy Birthday, Zoomom!

January 31, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterSuBee

1-4: Epcot helmets.

5: Before settling on the famous yin and yang symbol, the ancient Taoists experimented with different iconography to depict the balance of elements in the universe. The name of this particular symbol is lost to time, but it is believed that the black, white, and pink elements represent night, day, and smallpox, respectively.

@Carol: I also thought it was a fancy orchid, or a wad of tissue paper.

January 31, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterNaomi

I get what they are supposed to be, but before I scrrolled down to the second etc. pictures, I was totally gonna say a three-billed swan. :p

January 31, 2012 | Unregistered Commentereniko76

Dr. Horrible, first thing in the morning! It's going to be a great day.

Also, didn't even want to venture a guess... Not to mix my sports metaphors, but I believe that base has been covered.

January 31, 2012 | Unregistered Commentermichelej

I saw a swan with a muzzle on that first one too!! There are three of us at least that did! LOL!!!!

January 31, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterShawnee

Holy crap, I have no idea. However, I did love the Doctor Horrible reference. I've never bothered to comment before, but that, that deserved a comment. :D

January 31, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterhi-d

The only one that made me think of football helmets was the 2nd one, partly because I hate the Packers and therefore recognized their loathsome green "G" on top of the piles of leprechaun-gold. But then the pile of mashed-potatoes...really that looks like a monster I might find under my bed!

...and that pink thing...really? That's a helmet? For who? An alien species?

January 31, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterred

i figured it out from the first cake but only because it's about to be the superbowl and you always post sports cakes before big games.

January 31, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterjess

I suppose I've been following this blog for too long, because I recognized the first one as a helmet right away. Sigh.

January 31, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterkayk

Clearly, these cake decorators each have a Ph.D. in Horribleness.

January 31, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterkcwc

Are you sure the first one isn't a horse's head - bridle, eye, long neck - makes more sense than a helmet?

Really, anything makes more sense than a helmet.

January 31, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterConfused in Canada

You think Bad Horse didn't work on his whinny? His terrible death whinny....

It's about standards, which obviously these wreckerators do not have. The last one reminds me of a personal object that a woman might buy.

January 31, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterKim

If you turn your head severely to the right (or, turn the first picture to the left.....whichever is easier) that is a baker's way of using December's candy cane cake mold to make a football helmet. See? The black is the mouthguard with the space left in the middle for a face to go into. Frankly, my face is going into my palm, as in smacking myself in the face every time I look at it. The last one.....looks like a really fancy maxi pad. *snort*

January 31, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterTerry

Hockey...ball...sticks..foot..helmet...nah, I got nothin'...ooh, hang on, I think that last one is a nice pink slipper?

January 31, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterCaroline B

It's equipment and protective gear for the newly-created game of HockeyBall.

January 31, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterBADKarma

Did I detect a "Tae Kwan Leap" reference in the closing there Jen? Or am I the only one that remembers The Frantics? For the record, I thought the first pic was a buck-toothed albino flamingo!

January 31, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJen @ Cup a Dee Cakes

These cakes are a mind control plot on behalf of Bad Horse. They confuse us while he attacks with his terrible death whinny!

January 31, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterExpedition Eat (DIna K)

They're obviously all multicolored flamingoes. Duh. And a boot to the head.

January 31, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMimiheart

I guessed a faux 'European' symbol for basketball on the first one, until I remembered hearing there's some sort of football deal this coming weekend (or is it the weekend following?). Then, the universe shifted and these all made some sort of sense. Except the last one.

Hearing weird guitar music, I spun around to see, as expected, Rod Serling grimacing at me.

January 31, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterCraig

#1: a faucet? a cast? an elephant head?
#2: feuding pumpkins?
#3: angry ball of soapfoam?
#4: did they confuse helmet with football field with goal post? and what's with the eyes?
#5: ah, the pink slipper gourd red herring.

January 31, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterfootballfoe

and wherever did they get the idea that a football helmet is shaped like a cane?

January 31, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterfootballfoe

I'll be honest, I'm more than a little frightened that I knew exactly what the first one was supposed to be without scrolling any further. Perhaps I'm starting to "speak" Wreckie, simply by immersion. Perhaps I've been hanging around the Cake Wrecks water cooler a bit too much... (Is that even possible?)

January 31, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAymieJoi

I thought the first one was a very small ball being thrown into a very large basket. A sport in which even I might be able to score something!

January 31, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterPenny JG

That top one is OBVIOUSLY a blue flamingo in a hockey mask!

January 31, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMaria

I've been reading Cakewrecks too long: the last cake is for the launch party for a new feminine hygiene product being test marketed and surveyed on the internet ... Coming to stores near you, soon!

January 31, 2012 | Unregistered Commentergobbler

When will you tell us???!!! Others seem pretty confident they know but me.....uh....nope.

January 31, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJeffssis

People! People! Tsk Tsk

These are obviously Moods of the Uturus, painted by various artists, now showing at MOMA.

BTW is football STILL going on?

January 31, 2012 | Unregistered Commentermocking

grass, trapped under a steel pitchfork,
petitions its god.

January 31, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterHaiku Joy

If I squint hard enough and possibly stand on my head, I can kind of see football helmets in all of these but the last one. On what planet is that a football helmet? Also, the 2nd wreck looks like those french fry things from McDonald's. I can't remember for the life of me what they're called...

January 31, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterTiffany

The first cake needs a quater turn counterclock-wise. Then you can totally see that it is in fact a helmet!

January 31, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJenn

Did you just end that post with a Frantics reference?! That's the nerdiest thing I've seen in a long time. So you are Canadian. Or maybe you only know them through Dr. Demento, in which case ... nope, still nerdy.

January 31, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterZac

I see by all the comments that these are really lame attempts at football helmets. Never woulda guessed that. I suppose it's a measure of...something...that I had absolutely no idea what the cakes were meant to be, only vaguely knew that the Superbowl was coming up, but immediately picked up the Dr. Horrible reference. No, I'm not geeky, not me.

January 31, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterSaraCVT

Thanks SuBee!
(I was having a little trouble graping the fact that I am 40 today: I only feel about 12. Then I put on a pair of jeans fresh from the dryer and I felt every one of my 40 years!)

January 31, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterzoomom

I'm waiting to see what shaped heads these "helmets" are supposed to fit on.
