What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

- Jen

Head Scratchers

Fellow wreckies, you will never in a million years believe what this cake is supposed to be:

Go on. Try to guess. I'll wait.

Did you guess a buck-toothed snake?

Did ya? Did ya didyadidyahuh?

'Cuz that's not it.

Here, I'll give you a hint. It's the same thing THESE are supposed to be:

(Pay no attention to my snazzy photoshopping; I had to take out a piece of flotsam that might give it away.)

So now you're wondering what a buck-toothed eel has to do with a leprechaun's pots of gold.

Good question.

Ah - but the plot is about to thicken!

Much like these mashed potatoes.

And yes, this is also the same thing those other things are supposed to be.

Ok, if you haven't figured it out by now, here's the clincher:

All clear now?

Ok, ok, then THIS one will do it for sure:

Or maybe I'm just messing with your head.

(So that's, you know, coming along.  I've been working with a vocal coach. Which, come to think of it, doesn't make much sense when I TYPE everything...)

Thanks to Zack Z., Jayme H., Jason C., Colin G., & Melissa K. for the boot to the heads.

@Tiffany - The Fry Kids!

@HaikuJoy - Thank you, I cannot complete my day without a comment from you. :)

And to all those who mentioned the Frantics, thank you for helping me NOT be the only one who really thought Jen was referencing a song from the Dr. Demento Show. Love you all!

My Little Brother thought the first one was a duck!
But when we scrolled down, he was the first one to guess!

January 31, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterNausicaa

First: I'm glad I'm not the only one who figured out they were football helmets.
Second: I'm REALLY glad I'm not the only one who thought the last cake had a "personal massager" on it.

January 31, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterSyl B

I saw the operation the bakers tried to pull today.
But their humiliation means I still vote nay.
And now wreckeration is just the only waaaaaaaaayyyy

January 31, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterflarglepuf

100,000 points for the reference to Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog. (hmm, I should go around the internet and give points out to everyone who references DHSAB...nothing better than good old positive reinforcement to keep the magic alive)

Tilting my head 90 degrees to the right helped a lot with that first wreck.

January 31, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterWee Fishie

This is called a football helmet epcot.

January 31, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterDS

Football helmets?
The first one looked like a swan wearing a muzzle. (Well, they CAN be tough. Very tough. I wouldn't mind seeing a Savannah Swans football team...)
Where was I?
Yeah, helmets.
That last pink thing, you HAD to be messing with us. It looks like an unecessarily girly field hockey stick.

January 31, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterBlondie's Mom

Actually,as I look at that pink thing is REALLY obscene.
Or it might be a slipper.
I don't know.
But it's...yecch.

January 31, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterBlondie's Mom

Feel like a to read comments before making mine.
Well, that's 4 votes for muzzled swan.
And many more for obscenepersonalfuntoy.
At least we know great minds think alike.
I'll shut up now.
*But would someone explain Dr Horrible and Epcot to me?

January 31, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterBlondie's Mom

Is that a Dr. Horrible reference I see at the bottom?!

January 31, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterKat

Baaahahahahahahahahha!!!!! Bucktooth eel!!!! Priceless!! Maybe the first picture is of some redneck high school mascot?!?!?? :D The Bucktooth Eels. They'll getcha every time... one way or another!
I did figure it out fairly quickly, however, I did suspect for a few seconds that perhaps the first & last ones were meant to be some sort of hockey stick. (I'm Canadian, what'd'ya expect? lol!!)

January 31, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMartha

That last one has me a little, er, excited. Wonder if it comes with batter-ies, get it batter, it's a cake....

January 31, 2012 | Unregistered Commentervicthsht

I am reminded of the Garrett Morris quote; "If it were not for Football, I would not be playing football today."

January 31, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterDana

I think the first one is an amputated "U"

January 31, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterSusan

The first one is clearly an albino flamingo with a beak deformity from being used as a croquet mallet a la Alice and Wonderland. No clue on the others.

January 31, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterZoe

I'm pretty sure that even that last pink one is supposed to be a football helmet, though it looks like the picture was taken upside down. And heaven help the person who thought that pink stars on a football helmet seemed like a good idea.

January 31, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterCourtenay

I was thinking football helmets from #2 on, until I got to the last one. What the..?!

And kudos to you for not only getting a Dr. Horrible reference in there, but a Frantics one, too! Boot to the head! *oof* And one more for Jenny and wimp! *ow!* *oh!*

January 31, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterStefani

I was going with "Duck" until about the 4th picture, when I just gave up and went to lie down.

January 31, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJeneric

I know the first one...that's Garfield Goose

January 31, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterEve

Well, it's QUITE clear to me:

1. An Anteater in a turtleneck
2. Two African Pygmy Hedgehogs wearing glasses
3. A Tortoise in a parka
4. A goat in a burka
5. A Snail wearing a poplin blouse

All for the re-release of the book, Animals Should Definitely Not Wear Clothing.

January 31, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterCheri

(In Mr. Gumby voice) My brain hurts!

January 31, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJules

I thought the first one was a swan, or maybe a hockey stick in dire need of some viagra

January 31, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAudrey

You know, a lot of guys ignore the laugh, and that's about standards. I mean, if you're gonna get into the Evil League of Evil, you have to have a memorable laugh. What, do you think Bad Horse didn't work on his whinny? His terrible death-whinny?

January 31, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterKL

Ok, anyone who tries to tell me that the second picture is NOT of two pumpkins with really big smiles is WRONG! Wrongwrongwrongwrongwrongwrong!

January 31, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterUnknown

The buck toothed eel had me doing that sideways head tilt as I tried looking at it from different perspectives for clues...I'm Canadian, so of course my first thought was a bad impression of a hockey stick ;) The next picture of the yellow pumpkins with the little bits of fences in front of them and your hint that they were the same, resulted in a blink... then an 'OH! THAT'S what it is... wow, that first one is BAD..." lol

As always, thanks for the laugh. I work in a bakery and I'm glad to say the few theme cakes I saw for this week end so far bear a much better resemblance to things... then again, I haven't seen our cake lady's interpretation of one of THESE yet ;)

January 31, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterSkye

That bucked tooth eel looks like the the little dental suction tube, you know, Mr slurpy

January 31, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterDonna

That last one looks like a crookneck squash. Could it be an homage to the vegetable?! :P

January 31, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJen

I had to really LOOK at the top pictures, and I see what they are...but I don't understand what a house shoe has to do with everything else? 'Cuz that's what the bottom picture looks like!

January 31, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterRia

After the first one I was thinking "swan" but now I'm pretty sure the answer is "football helmet," though if that's the case these bakers clearly are unfamiliar with the shape of a human head. Or they don't know that helmets are meant to be worn on the head.

January 31, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterBluejay

For the first one, I was thinking Gym sock with a Pirate's curse of death, but, since I have to pull each photo up individually(computer sucks), I inadvertantly saw the pic's description...but I never would have guessed it right!!

January 31, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterwanie

Kudos on the Dr. Horrible shout-out!!

Also: WOW. Craziest football helmets I've ever seen to be sure!!

January 31, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterBrenna

I grasped that they were all helmets by the second picture, poor as the renditions are.

The last one looked more like a protective cup to me; apparently for a very girly kind of boy. Not that there's anything wrong with that. There's room in professional sports for players of all persuasions, right?

January 31, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterEsty

Maybe the wreckerators have spent too much time in Tae Kwon Leap.

January 31, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterRachel B.

Anyone with have a brain could tell that making cakes has gone insane . . .

And I was thinking fancy (sports) cup on that last one? I'm really trying to think of it as a football helmet . . . or anything that has to do with football . . . and I'm failing miserably.

But reading your posts, Jen, makes it plain to see, rapture inside of me is on the rise. <3

January 31, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterChris

I thought the first one was a buck-toothed snake wearing a football helmet. lol

January 31, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMeg

#4 looks like how I feel when I have a sinus infection.

January 31, 2012 | Unregistered Commentergabsmom

Doctor Horrible reference FTW

January 31, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAli

A lot of guys ignore the laugh... and that's just standards.

January 31, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterNikkiO

I was so sure they were something political, because I thought the first one was a mutant elephant.

It all went downhill from there. "Football helmets" never got anywhere near entering my mind.

January 31, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterPostmenopaws

Is anyone gonna tell us what it is?

January 31, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterKim

That's about standards. I mean If you're going to get into the Evil Bakery of Evil you have to have a memorable wreck. I mean, do you think that The Mad Bad Baker didn't work on his frosting... his terrible death frosting.

January 31, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterRob

football helmets?

January 31, 2012 | Unregistered Commentertiny p. elephant

Love the Dr. Horrible reference at the end there. ;)

January 31, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterNay

I've been here too long... knew right from the start what they were supposed to be.

Except for that last one. Jen, aren't you supposed to mark photos like that "NSFW"? It's clearly a [CENSORED!].

January 31, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterDances With Lasagna

Ridiculous wrecks and a Dr. Horrible reference. Oh Jen, how I love you!

January 31, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJill M

Doctor Horrible reference!!! You guys win more and more each day!

January 31, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterSami

A quote from Dr. Horrible! You just made my day!

January 31, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterDawn

Also, I've now had Boot to the Head stuck in mine since I first read this about 8 hours ago. :P

January 31, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterCarol

Bonus points for the Dr. Horrible reference. I just watched that this morning. Good times. Bad cakes! :D

January 31, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterTheresa

I actually guessed it from the first one...which is super sad considering I'm Australian. Perhaps people who have awful art skills can recognise one of their own? ;)

Also...Dr. Horrible, yayayayayay! :D
