What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

True Colors

You with the baaad eyes

Don't be discouraged!

Oh I realize

It's hard to read orders

In a shop full of people

Who drive you up a wall

And the bakers beside you

Can make you feel so small

But I see your TRUE COLORS

Writing through!

I see your TRUE COLORS

'Cuz that's how I write, too!

To let them flow

Your true colors

True colors are literal

Like a "stilleto"

And I'll see your TRUE COLORS

Causing "boo"s!

I see your TRUE COLORS

But don't let that stop you!

So don't be afraid!

To let them flow

Your true colors

True colors are "beautiful,"

Like this raaaainbow:

A big "thank you in puce" to Andrea P. Mark A., Caylin C., Darnie S., Lezlie S., Paula P., Andrea H., Christine F., & Lacey for today's colorful characters.

Yay! My favorite--the literal LOL's!!

February 28, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterHairproductjunkie

I'm definitely going to start saying 'Thank you in purple' to people from now on.

February 28, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterBriony

These ones always just kill me. I don't understand how so many people do this, and how many examples are on this site alone.

It boggles the mind.

February 28, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterKristin

How em-effin' STUPID can people be at all???

Or are they all just color blind???

Blue written out in yellow and yellow written out in blue... it's mindboggling. Just mindboggling.

February 28, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterBea

Wow. That "rainbow" looks like someone mixed together all of the play-doh colors and smeared it on the cake!

February 28, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterTeish

Up too early with a sick little one, but my day's better already: giggles at funny cakes, and Cyndi Lauper (who will be stuck in my head all day, no doubt!). Thanks! :)

How I will place my next cake order:
"I Drove All Night to get to this bakery. All Through the Night, I contemplated my order and some things I have learned from reading Cake Wrecks and Time After Time I came to the same conclusion; you get what you pay for, so Money Changes Everything. That and to carefully interview your decorator, because Girls Just Want to Have Fun (She Bop!).
Now, if you get this order right, I'll Kis You."

February 28, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterzoomom

I'm sure "Son", "Brondi" & "Samanta" are happy with their wreckerator's choices of colors. MUCH better than what was specified. :P

February 28, 2012 | Unregistered Commenteranony mouse

It's really embarassing to be sitting at my desk laughing out loud and spitting on my computer screen!

February 28, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterjust me

HOW??? How how how how how??? Are bakeries all staffed with ESL-speakers?

Couldn't bakeries develop order forms in which you write the message you want on the cake in one box and then beneath it specify the font color for the message? Or could someone develop an app that shows bakers how you want the cake to look - so that these kinds of things don't happen anymore???

February 28, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterDeafMedievalist

I'm usually appropriately shocked and horrified on behalf of whatever poor soul unwittingly walked in to pick up their cake order and was presented with one of these monstrosities. But honestly, mauve? "MAUVE"?!?! If you need to ask for "mauve" writing, you deserve what you get.

February 28, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterFaith

This is my all-time favorite song and you JUST MADE IT EVEN BETTER!!! You rock Jen!

February 28, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterTanyaK

Somehow, it's always more painful when the wreckerator has nice handwriting, like in the first and penultimate ones.

February 28, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterelissa

My favorite is that even when the baker had a 50/50 chance of getting "Samant(h?)a yellow" and "Bro(a?)ndi blue" correct, they managed to eff it up.

Not sure there are words... they've all been taken. Too literally in mauve.

Why do we call it COMMON sense, when it obviously isn't?

BTW - Love Cyndi Lauper!

February 28, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterDi

You did a FAB job with the song! I loved this post. I now have that wonderful song looping thru my brain, and the images that it will bring from this day forward will be of cakewrecks.

I wonder what kind of experiences one has during a year that classifies the prior 12 months as a "purple" year.... And, what I don't understand, is someone gives instructions to have the colors be only green and yellow..... Where did the pink come from?

February 28, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterSandy C in SoFla

Well, at least Andrea got sprinkles. I hope that Cristina was happy when she got her cake, or at least laughed.

Cake #3 was presented to the staff of the mayor of Purple, Idaho, who had helped him through his first year in office. "Mauve Ben and Lurlie (Iwslie?)" was supposed to be "Happy Move, Ben and Lurlie (Iwslie?)" but having just made the mayor's cake, purple hues were on the baker's mind.

I have to wonder if not only was some poor child named after a style of shoe, but it was misspelled, to boot. (Hee! See what I did there?)

February 28, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMelindaB

There once was a baker named Roy
Who used pink to pipe "It's a Boy"
Every time he skipped sprinkles
His eyes shone with twinkles
"I LOVE having cakes to destroy!"

February 28, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterSharyn

Wow, I can't believe there are so many of these! I don't know whether to laugh at the customer for writing/saying colour information in the wrong place or groan at the cake makers for taking everything SO literally!

February 28, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterthinkellen

I love how on Wreck #7, the one that specifies blue icing is the only one NOT written in blue. It's as though the wreckerator just wanted to add a tiny little additional insult.

February 28, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterA Hicks

Near where I live, there's a "gentleman's club" (that's what it calls itself) named Stiletto's. Given its reputation and its frequent appearances on the police blotter, it's rather appropriate that the place is named for a concealed weapon.

Makes you wonder how many times bakery managers have told their employees, "We don't pay you to think."

February 28, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAnna B

This is actually bugging me. Who is that "mauve" cake for? Does it say "Ben & lurlie"?! Forget the weirdness of mauve, what kind of a name is "lurlie"? Who names their kid "lurlie"?

February 28, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterzoomom

The literal wrecks are one of my favorites! Especially when the specified color isn't used! Bwahahaa!

Well, at least Andrea DID get her sprinkles!

February 28, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJuice

Ahh classic cakewrecks-the literal LOL's-too bad-some of them had potential for being nice, if they'd been done by literate people.

February 28, 2012 | Unregistered Commentermindy1

Any guesses who Ben is with? My best guess is Leslie. Because Iuslie? Not so much. Although I suppose it could be Ben Eluslie... Though if you're asking for mauve writing, anything is possible.

February 28, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMuria

My least-favorite Cyndi Lauper song, EVAR gets the treatment it so richly deserves!

As do these "cakes"!

February 28, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterBADKarma

Oh, I love the literal LOL's!

That first one looks photoshopped! I have, of course, seen a great many shopped images in my time, and I can tell by the pixels. Does anyone else thinks it looks a little weird?

And is it Cristina Noh, or a non-small font? And why is Cristina happy?

February 28, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterCaren

#1 Somebody FINALLY got sprinkles!

#2 Glad you're so happy, Cristina--we got you this cake to show you!

#3 The mayor of Purple, Ohio commissioned the cake for his constituents after his first year in office--you know politicians!

#4 Happy Birthday to a redhead!

# 5 This cake is for a three-way couple--Mauve, Ben, & Lurlie (?) How nice that they get along so well.

#6 Somebody REALLY loves their shoes

#7 WTF does this cake say?!?

#8 Lifelong Packers fan

# Taste the rainbow if you dare

February 28, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterSaraCVT

What is wrong with the people that take these orders... perhaps you can start an online course for talking a cake order. Oh sorry that's called 'common sense'! I guess you've either got it or you haven't... Great blog btw!

February 28, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJane

#4 Oh no! "Happy Birthday" in red -- and I used all the red icing on Valentine's day! Wait...maybe if I write 'red' on the cake, it will still count!

#6 Maybe the recipient's nickname is 'Stilleto' -- and she (?) spells it that way on purpose. Right.

#7 This could be one of those brain teaser things where you have to say the name of the color instead of the color of the text. Or not.

#8 "Green and yellows only!" Except for the pink flowers and the black message, I'd say they nailed it.

#9 "Let's it ROY G. VIB? GOY V. RIB? GOV. BIRY? Never mind -- I'll just smush them all together. The correct sequence is bound to be in there, somewhere. Let the folks on Cake Wrecks figure it out.

DOC alert. DOC alert. This is not a drill. Be sure to carry all colors today. That is all.

February 28, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterCraig

Oh man, green and yellow only is so tragic. It's such pretty penmanship!! XP

February 28, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAddy

Like most of the others, I just am mind-boggled by the number of times that this happens. Just why?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

February 28, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterCarol

February 28, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterSunshine Mary

Cruel and unusual punishment for those that are color-blind.

February 28, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterlisadh524

That second one is a beautiful cake, though. I think it's supposed to be Cristina (no "h") -- most people would spell it Christina.

But.... Happy Birthday, Stilleto? lmao

February 28, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterPatti

Why do people keep questioning my name???

February 28, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterLurlie

I bet Ben had a heck of time explaining to lugie (Lusie?) who Mauve was. And why she was on the cake!

February 28, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterIsabella

As someone who works in customer service I have to wonder if any of these were done accidentally on-purpose, say from an annoying customer? If I worked in cakes I confess that I would be tempted.

February 28, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterPee Jay

The literals are the best!!!

cake #1 - If the icing was supposed to be blue, why didn't the baker just make blue icing??!! Why the bad blue airbrushing job??!!
cake #3 - Wendy and Lisa gave that cake to Prince
cake #7 - my favorite! definitely a new classic!
cake #8 - I love how enthusiastic the baker is over the colors. "Green and yellows only! how wonderful! Now I can make the roses pink!" Actually it's a little known fact that the color scheme green and yellow has only been around 90 years.

February 28, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterFlower Girl

oh wow! I really needed that song stuck in my head like I need one of those cakes... :P

February 28, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMichelle D
