What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Sunday Sweets: Robot Rock

Robots are awesome.

Well, most of them, I mean. Obviously the Terminator/War of the Worlds/Furby models need to be killed with fire, but the REST are pretty dang cool. Cuddly, even.

No, seriously! C'mon, tell me you don't want to snuggle with K-9 here:

By Imaginative Icing

How adorable is he?! I just want to take him home and introduce him to my cats. After all, if they thought the Roomba was great...

Of course, some robots can be a bit more....debonair. Right, R2?

By The Uncommon Cakery

[beep boop WOOO-AAAH!]

That's droid for, "Check me out in my bow tie, ladies!"

Hey, kids, do you know what time it is?

That's right:

It's PRIME TIME!!

Submitted by Paula D. and made by The Bunny Baker

I guess technically Optimus is a kind of alien robot, but let's not get distracted from how amazing he looks on that cake stand. (Er, the stand made of cake, that is.) Every detail is just stunning.

Oh, and you can tell this isn't the movie version of Optimus Prime because he's not surrounded by a giant exploding fireball. Heh. Aheh. Heh.

When Doctor Who fans marry:

Submitted by Desiree L. and found here; baker unknown.

"CEL-E-BRATE."

I like how the cake uses the same gold studs as the Daleks - very geek chic.

Ah, but I can almost hear some of you complaining that the Daleks themselves are not cake.

Not to worry: Big Daddy Dalek is IN DA HOUSE:

By Stacked Cakes (process pics at the link)

This killer specimen is over two feet tall, and his head can rotate from side to side. WOW. (I'd be terrified, but there's a little step up to my office. So, you know, I'm safe.)

When Androids go green:

By Mike Terry, photo found here.

In case the little cake in his hand didn't give it away, this guy is a wedding cake. And check out how his head is balancing on that tiny post: that is some impressive cake engineering!

Btw, you know your mascot is adorable when your competitor's customers have toy versions of it on their desks. Just sayin'. (Although mine's yellow, not green.)

And while we're talking robot wedding cakes, you guys have GOT to see this one:

Submitted by Gina F. and made by A Cake to Remember

Hang on a sec while I wrap my brain around this:

It's a cake robot...with a cake cake in his lap... SITTING ON A CAKE.

Ok. Yeah.

That is awesome.

When Robots Meet the Robinsons:

Submitted by Julie B. and made by Jean S. of Cakes With Character

I admit it: I just made myself giggle with that joke. Mostly because now I'm imagining the Robot and the T-rex trying to play patty cake.

[imagining]

BWUAH-HA-HA-HAAAA!!

Here's another shot of him:

Plus, I'd say the only danger here is that I might start gnawing on one of those slinky arms.

And speaking of slinky arms, I keep seeing this adorable robot all over, so I finally Googled him to find out his name:

By Superstar Pastry Design

Turns out this is Plex from the show Yo Gabba Gabba. Which I'm pretty sure all you moms out there already knew. And since he's from a kids' show, I'm now going to be forced to go investigate what kind of Plex toys are out there. (You know, 'cuz my Android toy is lonely.)

Has anyone else noticed that Doctor Who has all the best robots? K-9, Daleks, and - oh yeah - CYBERMEN:

By Truly Scrumptious Designer Cakes

I've actually featured this cake once before, but the photo I had then was tiny and not the best clarity. This time, I managed to find a great close-up shot:

Just look at all that detail! And this guy is also pretty massive - I think over two feet tall. Wouldn't you love to see him next to the Big Daddy Dalek?

Ok, let's wrap things up with what is arguably the cutest robot in the whole galaxy:

By Kara's Couture Cakes

WaaaAAAaall-E!

Now, I've seen a lot of amazing Wall-E cakes, but the added details of the boot planter and Wall-E's pet bug make this one of the BEST Wall-E cakes I've ever seen. It's Awwww-Mazing!

I did my best to find cakes of every famous robot I know, but I couldn't find any for Rosey from the Jetsons, Metropolis, Atlas and P-body, or the Horizons robots from Disney - and I've already posted a personality core (ala Wheatley) from Portal. So, if you know of any robot cakes I missed - or have any other nominations for Sweets - then please send them to me at Sunday Sweets [at] Cake Wrecks [dot] com!

yeah, so I'm going to totally date myself and call out V.I.N.CENT from "The Black Hole". He was a cute little robot before Wall-E was a gleam in his daddy's eye.

Firstly: I agree, REAL Daleks are totally defeated by stairs. There are stairs to every entrance of my house, so I'm completely safe :)

Secondly: Sorry, but this nerd-girl just doesn't get a Dalek bride and groom. I mean, they're cool and it looks great and all, but daleks are totally emotionless. I just can't see myself thinking "What signifies our love best? I know! Remorseless killing machines that despise all emotions as weakness! Yay!"

Just sayin'

I second the vote for the MST3K Bots! And I hope someone makes a cake of Norm the robot man from Phineas and Ferb...

What about astroboy?

My favorite is Iron Giant, too. Here's one I found by Creative Cakes in South Africa: http://www.creativecakes.co.za/gfx/iron-giant-cake.jpg

It's not a 3d cake, but I did find this pretty well drawn Johnny 5 cake. It is pretty cool! http://www.tastycookiecreations.com/images/cakes/Large/short%20circuit.jpg

April 15, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterSerena

I love Wall-E!!! I totally just read that in his voice. He is so cute!

April 15, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterme

Check out Richard Sargent's very comprehensive group of the world's most famous robots. Would love to see some of these in cake too!

I am loving the Dr. Who cakes, today, guys! I had to link my local Dr. Who fan club to check them out. :)

April 15, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterValerie H

I love reading this blog, but the fact that this post had so many Doctor Who references made me love it even more!!! :D

April 15, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterkrhauser

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Tom Servo, Crow, or Gypsy for robots. Those were the very first ones that came to mind when I read the title of the post. MST3K forever!

And Bender of course.

April 15, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterkim

I need a Gort cake (The Day the Earth Stood Still). :-)

April 15, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterSue

How could you have a cuddly awesome robots post without Gir, the cutest robot in the universe???

April 15, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterLydia

@ Kara - thanks for clearing that up. It's such a neat idea and you did a great job. Kudos to you!!

April 16, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterhedge

Doctor Who! I'll admit it; I'm a huge Whovian and those cakes made me pretty happy. They're all so beautiful, though! I'm an amateur baker myself, and seeing the Sunday Sweets inspire me to bake. At the moment my skills are somewhere between a Wreck and a Sweet, but hopefully a little closer to being a Sweet.

Just for the record about WALL-E's friend (from wikipedia) :

"The filmmakers dubbed the cockroach WALL-E keeps as a pet "Hal", in reference to silent film producer Hal Roach (as well as being an additional reference to HAL 9000)."

April 16, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterPluytje

I know the Borg are just Cybermen with money but where are they? And Data is missing as well.

April 16, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJamie Jo

On another note, Hal the cockroach is cute, but I really don't think I could stomach putting a cockroach in my mouth, sugar or not. Sorry, Wall-E.

April 16, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAnna B

Love these but agree they are tons of robots out there deserving honorable mention. Would love to find a "Robots" Cake but here are some I found:

This list incomplete!
Why isn't my fridge a cake?
Why the short shrift, Jen?

(Seriously, I ask those two questions all the time. I know it's Florida and dash-it-all, but here's a slightly longer shrift. And just now, while staring at the dried-out baby carrots in the fridge, I murmured, "Why aren't you a cake?" to the magnetic door. It hummed back, but I don't know the tune.)

April 16, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterHaiku Joy

Where's Bender? Data? Replicators? Tik-tok?

April 16, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJoelle

Any of the characters from the movie Robots would be pretty cute. Ooh and Red Robot and the gang from Diesel Sweeties!

April 16, 2012 | Unregistered Commentertoast

I continue the sentiment that the Daleks and Cybermen are more living beings than robots... but they are pretty close to being robots. Incidently, this blog was one of the first things that introduced me to Dr. Who, now I'm an addict huge fan, and have watched almost everything there is on netflix. So, thanks for bringing me more geekery!

WaaaAAaaaLeeee...

April 16, 2012 | Unregistered Commentersam

That is just the cutest little Cyberman that I have ever seen. Not so scarey when its made of cake. LOL

April 16, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterHD

I gotta say, I can't stand K-9.

LOVE the daleks, though! I want that dalek wedding cake.

It probably says something about me that I'd kick K-9 through a window in a heartbeat, but I think daleks are adorable.

April 16, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterBewildebeest

I kind of wish someone had made cakes of the mars rovers. Which are REAL robots.

April 16, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterKate

I want a cake with Crow T Robot and Tom Servo from Mystery Science Theater 3000!

April 16, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJoAnna

What, No (half-robot) Cyborg from Teen Titans!?! I'm disapointed!! One needs to be posted, STAT(:

April 16, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterTeenTitansFan

Dear Jen & John thoj,

I don't have the photos, but here's some robots to add to your list:
Robby the Robot, (what a classic! Who could forget him? Maybe he's too good, too complicated...)
The melded robot probe on Star Trek TOS - "Sterilize...sterilize...sterilize"

and... (these are questionable)
The Black Hole movie robots
Tweekie from Buck Rogers (& maybe Dr Theopolis too)
Muffy the robot dog from Battlestar Galactica

And where the heck is C-3PO? And all the other Star Wars Ep4 'bots that the Jawas had for sale & the little black 'scaredy-cat' one that zipped away from Chewy on the Deathstar?

April 17, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterKarateLady

I'm not sure if someone else already mentioned this, but I think the robot sitting on a cake and holding a cake is actually the Tin Man from Wizard of Oz. You know, the whole "now I have a heart" thing....and marriage,,,I just think they made him look too robot-y, but still recognizable as mister Tin Man. What do you think?

April 18, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterBeth

I just had to say, since I was catching up on my reader feed...

FINALLY, SOMEBODY ELSE WHO THINKS FURBYS (ies?) SHOULD BE KILLED WITH FIRE!!!!

Man, I hate those things. It started out when I was poking at my sisters' (not a misplaced apostrophe, they were - and still are - twins) best friend's Furby. I swear the thing said "I hate you" in its annoying chirpy Furby voice. I scooped it into my winter hat, carried it into the room where they were playing, and informed the owner that she could have it back and I recommended killing it before it took over the world. A view I have held for the last fifteen years. Even now, when I'm in an antique store and I see a Furby, I shudder.

April 19, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterKate

All we're missing is the Iron Giant! I love that movie!

April 19, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterRachel

Where are Tom Servo and Crow?!?

May 6, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterRachel

ok, the fact that there are 4 Doctor Who cakes makes up for the fact that daleks and cybermen aren't actually fully robots.
i mean, when i opened this page and saw K-9, i squealed like a twelve year old fangirl meeting the members of One Direction in person. then i saw the other 3 and died a little on the inside (in a good way)
OOH! i just had an idea!
you guys should make a doctor who theme day some time.
now i'm all excited for nothing...

May 6, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMajor Whovian

Oh my GOSH! I want a K9 cake. reminds me of my happy Doctor Who lovin' childhood oh so many years ago.
... I never stopped loving Doctor Who
