What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

All Hail The Pink King!

Ever write an I and a C so close together that they kind of look like the letter K?

Why do I ask?

 Oh, no particular reason.

Thanks to Allison E. for the royal screw-up. (And how do you figure the baker knew to use pink icing?)

I C oops!

(Hey, it's early, and I have to get offspring to the orthodontist...)

Ha ha! Pink King! I once knew a guy who called his... You know what? Never mind.

May 21, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterzoomom

Hmm… which would be better? Pink King or pink icing?

May 21, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterCourt J.

okay, so I totally didn't get that until I looked at the comments. Maybe I need more coffee...

May 21, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterKrysmon

… and how come all the words are capitalized EXCEPT the kid's name???

May 21, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterShirley Fowley

I had to read that about three times to get it.
I'm glad I did; it was worth the brain ache :)

May 21, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJulie

that one took me a while. But I got it. LOL

May 21, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterMary Connealy

I want to see where the "a-y" went at the end of Birthd-. So many awesome fails on top of that cake!

May 21, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterdutchgirl

I used to teach at the Culinary Institute of America and the secretary transcribed all of the "icings" in my handwritten recipes as "King".....King for flowers, cake king etc......

May 21, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterTom

My son's nickname is the “Pink Thing." (It's what we imagined our cat, Inigo, said when we brought him home from the hospital --“ Life was good until you brought home the pink thing.") Maybe now that he, and the cat, are getting older, we'll change it to the “Pink King."

May 21, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSharyn

Took me a moment, but then I got it.

May 21, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterMaureen

I also have to admit it took me a little while to figure out ("Pinic?"...No, that's not the joke..."Pinic Icing?"....OHH..."Pink Icing.") But, that made it all the funnier when I got it. ;)

May 21, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterM. Dale

I have to wonder now, if they cut the cake with Pink King shears...

May 21, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterNyperold

that's one of them Cake Boss cakes that stores were/are still selling. No flavor and not worth the 25$ price tag and the icing was very thick.

May 21, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterCB

Pink King tappy birlhd chelsea. What alien language is this?

May 21, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJust Becky

Woo hoo!! I had to work a little for that one! I love it!! Tuesday Morning Challenge. It's a good thing. :)

May 21, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterabudoggie

@CB: I've seen those Cake Boss cakes in my local store. I'm surprised they aren't filled with rice cereal treats...

I do believe that says, "Happy Birlhd...". I think that means Chelsea has entered Berlehood, which is what they call it when you adopt a wild Milton.

May 21, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJust Andrea

Hehe ;)

May 21, 2013 | Unregistered Commentermindy1

My question is why is the writing ON TOP of the decoration?
LOL at the comment from the CIA instructor. The recipe for Royal King must have had students scratching their heads. Are there non-royal kings we weren't told about?

May 21, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterDonna`

I didn't get that either until I read the comments - I am slow today :)

May 21, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterLucie

Shouldn't this king cake have a plastic baby stuck in it?

May 21, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterjbrecken

@ Tom - Chef G., is that you? If so, hello! You were a great teacher.

May 21, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterCC

Nice. I spent the longest time trying to figure out what a "Pinic King" was before figuring it out, though!

May 21, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterTotalFluffster

Have to admit I was wondering where that 'IC' thing was, but mainly pondering why someone would take a picture of a cropped photo. Then I concluded that maybe the photo wasn't cropped intentionally, and was the only evidence for submission, at which point I was able to get past it and onto the other thing. (Note to self: might be time to go see that nice man some people keep suggesting I might like to chat with.)

I tried treating it as sort of a word search (if there were any such word as 'ic') and got nowhere. Then, deciding I might be over-thinking it, I backed away from the monitor -- and there it was. "Pinic!" No, wait, that doesn't make any sense. But there are no other Ks visible, unless... 'King' --> 'Icing'. Pink Icing! At last, a family-safe explanation for what 'Pink King' might have to do with 'Chelsea'! It's like a wrecky fractal -- it's two, two, two wrecks in one!

Happy CW anniversary to Jen, John (thoJ), Sharyn, Lindsey, Number One and "the regulars"* on the Board of Comments (shout out to DOC!). Theardare was searching for a special song to mark the occasion, but all the songs in his library suck fondant through cocktail straws, so he simply salutes you. I decided it was wisest not to say anything to Eddie 2.0, since there is literally no way to tell what might happen.

*Well, and the occasional visitors, too. You lurkers need to speak up. You people know who you are.

They forgot to cross the T. dammit.

May 21, 2013 | Unregistered Commentererin

I admit, I had to read the comments in order to figure out what a FUBAR cake this was!!

May 21, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterBelly Band Queen

They forgot to cross the t in birthday

May 21, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterdiessa

They knew to use pink icing because 'birlhd' means frosting in wreckeratese.

May 21, 2013 | Unregistered Commentergobblergobbler

@Nyperold hopefully the pink king shears aren't IN the cake!

May 21, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterEla

That looks like one of the Cake Boss cakes too. They cost a fortune and then the local bakery adds their "embellishments". Yowza!!

I've really missed you guys!!!
Sorry to be a downer but I need to get this out there...
The last week has been one I never ever ever want to repeat. Monday my girl was admitted to the hospital with kidney problems again. Tuesday morning my mother was admitted. Thursday morning my sweet mamma passed away peacefully. On Friday my girl was released from the hospital (they were in the same hospital, on the same floor!). On Saturday we had a service for my mom. On Monday (yesterday) my girl was re-admitted to the hospital and is still there as I type this. This Friday we will be taking my mom to Idaho for another service and burial on Saturday. Can someone please stop the ride? I would really really like to get off now.
I put this here because I have to tell you that when I was so sad I came here and saw all the hugs and prayers from you guys and read Sharyn's Hitchhiker's Guide post and couldn't stop giggling. Even at the worst time of my life, you guys were there making me smile.
Thanks Jen, john (ThoJ), Sharyn, KarateLady, mel, Just Andrea, Barbara Anne, Craig and all the rest for bringing a little laughter into my life when I needed it most.

< Couldn't agree more. They are dry and the icing is gritty. No filling either.

May 21, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterKrystal

Wow. I finally get my messed-up life under some small semblance of control, and decide to trot out a few old "friends" that I've missed. And WHAT do I find? I FIND that it is SO COMFORTING to see that this place is just as BEAUTIFULLY screwed-up as ever. Sometimes, I guess it really IS true that "The more things change, the more they stay the same." . ((SIGH!)) =^-.-^=

May 21, 2013 | Unregistered Commentersendingtheclowns

@Craig: it's not a cropped photo, it's the cake peeking out from within a box that has a transparent middle.

Now if they fubar'd parsing the "Pink Icing" then what prompted them to use pink icing? mind boggled.

May 21, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterBHC

Okay people, someone has to explain to everyone where the -ay in 'Birthday' went.
The cake was still in its box when the picture was taken. The window on the top of the box is blocking the -ay (and also the beginning of the H in 'Happy'.
(now watch them submit a picture out of the box, and it is spelled 'Birthdae' or something else, and I'll have to eat my words - as long as I can have them covered with cream cheese King)

May 21, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterCybrczch

I think the original request was for a cake for a frisky, all girl birthday party, requested by a poor speller who wrote "pinic icing." The decorator, realizing what she really wanted, but not sure how to do it, asked his boss for direction. “Should I make them by hand, or is there a mold?” he asked. His boss responded, “Just use the tips,” which the decorator obviously did, adding the blue balls to compete his work.

@Jodee: Hugs and prayers for you, your daughter and your family. When the ride stops (and it will!), get yourself some delicious cake and tasty ice cream to go with it. But make sure the cake is covered with Pink King so it will be perfect.

May 21, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterTLC

@Jodee -- No apology is needed...ever. The virtual community that Jen and john(thoj) have created here is made up of real people, people who not only can share a laugh, but can also share a burden. Just as we cheer each other on, we care about and support one another when life knocks us back a bit. This is a unique community -- one of compassionate, caring, commenting comedians, if you will. And, while we revel in comedy, we are not unacquainted with tragedy. Thank you for trusting us enough to share your sorrow, for in so doing it becomes our sorrow, too. And, until life eases up, we will stand with you and those you love, and will keep you, your daughter, and your family close in our thoughts, because you are a part of our family.

May 21, 2013 | Unregistered Commentermel

@Nyperold that was freakin' brilliant. I may love you. Sorry.

Jodee, don't apologize for letting us know how you are- ever. (((hugs)))
Hope your sweet girl is better and I'm so very sorry about your mother. (((more hugs)))

May 21, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterBarbara Anne

@Jodee -- I'm so sorry, and I wish I could give you a non-virtual hug. Take care of yourself and your family. I'm sending turbo-charged good karma to your daughter -- and you. Hugs.

May 21, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSharyn

Oh sheesh. It took a long while before I even realized they didn't mean to write pink king lol. I really couldn't see the i c thing so my eyes kept saying nope looks ok to me. Arghhh lol.

May 22, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterArlene

Aww Jodee, I'm sorry you've had such a rough couple of weeks...I'll be praying for you and your family.

May 22, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterPauline

Oy. The candlestick just resolved into two faces in profile. Thanks, @BHC.

Continued prayers, Jodee. Of the intercessory sort. Thanks for keeping us in the loop, as it were.

May 22, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterCraig

Mmmm,,, I bet that cake would taste good with a piping hot cup of Tasters Choke.

May 22, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterBob

I know where you are, Jodee. I found out last week that my husband had tried to kill himself (in a mental hospital in Austria, not the US) and was in the ICU in an induced coma. Week from hell does not begin to describe it. Fortunately your daughter is young, probably resilliant and modern medicine is getting better every day. I know you will miss your mother, as will your daughter, but death is the ultimate inevitablity and she was accompanied by family to the end.

I did not get this at all because I did not see the letters I & C but rather L & C and pinLc and Lcing did not say anything to me. Maybe I need new glasses.

May 22, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterAlison in Indiana

Lots of love, Jodee. I've been praying ever since you first posted about your daughter. Deepest sympathy on your loss. Make sure to keep taking Cake Wrecks, the world's greatest mood-lifter and host to the world's greatest commentator community, of which you are a treasured member.
