What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Easter Sunday Sweets

Hey all! John (the hubby of Jen) here. So my dear and wonderful wife, knowing how I get all weepy when I see kittens and bunnies and tribbles and the like, has asked me to take care of this week's Sunday Sweets. I'd like to think this is due to my incredible wit and charm, but it's probably more because she has to write a bazillion posts in the next two days. So, with no further ado, I give you: Easter Sweets!

This first one may be the most adorable bunny I have ever seen. Reminds me of those "Dunny" dolls Jen likes:

(Amy F. found it on Chocmocakes' Flickr stream here.)

Who's a cute widdle Dunny bunny? It's you, it's you!*

Next we have some fluffy bunny 'tocks. Jen thought the bottom texture looked a little like floral foam, but I think it's funky-cool.

(Found by Linda A., and made by Newsums of Cake Central. )

This next one has an unusual color scheme for an Easter cake, but it's nice and the bunny on top is super well done:
(Another find from Linda A. on Cake Central - this time by Dutch-Cakebox.)

As you all know, Jen is not overly fond of Easter lamb cakes. (Hey I just thought of a joke: What do you get when you eat most of an Easter cake? A quarter SHEEP cake! Booyah! Next stop, Reader's Digest!)

*ahem* As I was saying, Jen doesn't usually dig the lamb cakes - especially the smoking kind - but this one earned her seal of approval:

(Made by Andrea Schwarz. Thanks to Heather R. for submitting it!)

Personally I love the looks on their faces; like someone just jostled the cake and they all fell over. Cute!

And what would Easter be without a giant Easter egg and some lazy bunnies?**

(Pamela found it on Flickr and it was made by Cakes by Ashley. Thanks!)

This next cake is freaking amazing:

(Submitted by bunches of you, and made by the fantastic Fantasticakes.)

From the embossed pattern in the chocolate fondant to the sweet little chick on the top, this is one gorgeous cake. I've kneaded and rolled my fair share of fondant, so I can tell you that that egg was not easy. (If I had done it, there would be a big jagged seam up the back and pleats all over the place.) Also, Jen says the colors are "faboo", which I think means "cool."

And finally, here's a cake that both Jen and I looked at for a moment and said, "Wow, it's beautiful - but what is it?"

(Also submitted by a ton of you, and made by the one and only Highland Bakery.)

After a few moments we figured out that it's an Easter bonnet with a bunny cameo on it. (It's probably hard to tell because the edges are slightly cropped.) The skill shown in that ribbon and feathers is super impressive.

Well, that's it for me. Thanks to everyone who sent in submissions, and Happy Easter!

* I sounded very manly when I said this in my head.
** Great name for a rock band.

The Dunny cake is awesome!!!!! And I couldn't tell it was a bonnet either.

April 12, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterGossamer

that Easter bonnet is amazing!

John, I hope you do more posts in the future on occasion. Your commentary is as hilarious as your wife's. What a team!

The chocolate egg cake is my favorite I think.

April 12, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterNakia

wow, those are some intense cakes!

April 12, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterveggievixen

That bonnet is insane! Great sweets! :)

April 12, 2009 | Unregistered Commentermommadisco

Isn't that last one a top hat?

April 12, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterGaladriel

I'm inspired!

Think the sheep look like those cute guys on the mattress commercials.

I'm gonna have to give fondant a try.

April 12, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterValerie

Aw, I love a good Serta Mattress cake.

That is so funny that you said that about the band name... I'm constantly saying random stuff and then saying "That would actually be a pretty good band name!" -- My husband just jumped on the band name band wagon, so we're pretty pumped to see other people do it too.

ANYWAYS... those were super cute. I can't even believe the detail on the easter bonnet. That's insane!

April 12, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterZ's Wife

A man wrote this post, and the blogger and her husband are two separate people? I refuse to believe that. The commentary and style are identical to all other wrecky commentaries. Alas. Pretty cakes are pretty.

April 12, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterNove

Wow. Ya know what's funny is I don't evenlike cake but I love this site especially on Sundays. I love sing the insanely skilled ones. These cakes are clearly art.

That bein said I think I was more impressed by the last two cakes in todays post than any others. The chocolatey one looks almost like Faberge and the pink one...I just want to sit and admire it's beauty all day.

April 12, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterDani

Dear Nove,

I've spent 11 years married to the brains behind Cake Wrecks and 10 months reading and rereading every post and moderating most of the comments. It was kinda inevitable that I would end up writing like Jen.

I have even tried my hand at writing everyday funny posts but Jen always says something like, "No no, don't try to sound like me. I want it to be in your voice."

Ah well. This was my first shot and I hope it was okay.

You guys are the best.

April 12, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterjohn (the hubby of JEN)

Haha, John, I enjoyed this post. You and Jen are clearly a great team.

April 12, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterJulie

Nicely done, John (the hubby of Jen)!

I love that you're willing to talk a little baby talk to bring out the essence of a cute widdew Eastew cake.

Happy Resurrection Day to you and Jen!

April 12, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterDorci Harris

fantastic! How could you possible eat something so beautiful?

April 12, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterFiona

Like Galadriel, I thought the last picture was a top hat, but my first thought was actually that it was the Mad Hatter's (from Alice in Wonderland?) Easter hat.. hehehehe.

Faboo, indeed.

April 12, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

the Dunny cake is the cutest thing i have EVER seen!! awwwwww!!!! : )))
and that bonnet is freakin gorgeous! holy crap!!! wow. it's too pretty to eat!

Happy Easter! :))

April 12, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterGiusi.

At first I mistook the giant chocolate egg for a football. Still looks yummy.

It'd be harder for me to eat the 'tocks.

April 12, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterdeckardcanine

So, so pretty! This totally makes up for all the wrecks earlier this week. I cannot believe how many horrible cakes are actually for sale!

April 12, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterNikki

John, you were AWESOME. :) We should definitely have more from you (But tell Jen we missed her and want her back. Cuz no one can replace Jen. Ahem)

Fabulous cakes, as usual!! I made an Easter cake... looks nothing like these. Good thing you don't take non-professional wrecks. ;)

April 12, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterSariah

It's seeing cakes done to this level that make me despair of ever creating something half that good. Amazing, just amazing.
And today's commentary was pretty rockin' too. (Why are there so many Jen and Jo(h)n combos? I'm half of one too!)

April 12, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterJasry

Props for the awesome guest post!

April 12, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

very nice post, john! you are a sweetheart for giving jen a hand.

the cakes never cease to amaze me on sundays. wow. just wow.

April 12, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterElessa

That bonnet is something else! What nice cakes! All of them get an "A++" in my book.
Happy Easter~

April 12, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAmy

Hoppy Easter everyone!

April 12, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterChar

The last one looks like a version of the Mad Hatter's hat.

April 12, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Lazy Bunnies would be an awesome name for a rock band! I hear a random collection of words and tell her that would be a great name for a rock band. Sometimes she just rolls her eyes at me and sometimes she smiles. I do it for the smiles.

April 12, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterehudwill

I love the sheep!

April 12, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterksaldria

Great job, John! Love the "manly" comment at the end. :P

April 12, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

What is it about the inherent awesomeness of J-names?

The Fabergé Egg cake was faboo/cool.

And while I saw the bunny cameo it didn't take until reading the further commentary to spot that it was a hat. This makes it all the more cooler.

What I like about cake wrecks is that I could actually stand chopping them into little bits and eating them. These? Bring on the lacquer!

April 12, 2009 | Unregistered Commentergreen

They are all great cakes. Happy Easter everyone!

April 12, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterfabelicious

Awesomely wrecky wrecks yesterday, adorably awesome sweets today! Add in the first sunny day in a while, and I'm having a very happy Easter indeed. :)

How on earth is my word verification "potomac" today?

April 12, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Those are inspiring!

April 12, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMari

The Dunny Bunny cake is by far my favourite.

April 12, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMeagan

The egg was most likely covered in modeling chocolate which is easier to use on rounded objects and can give that shiny look

April 12, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterjbcpc

These are the sweetest of your Sunday Sweets!

April 12, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterJulie

I LOVE these, and I love Sundays at Cake Wrecks!!

April 12, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterJessica

Oh wonderfull cakes Easter, greeting from Belgium, happy Easter.

April 12, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterLouisette

I don't understand the quarter sheep joke D:

April 12, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterJess

John- yeeeah, when I read the commentary on the dunny bunny cake, I was TOTALLY picking up a burly man vibe.
I think the voice in my head while reading it was Mister T:
"It's you, it's you!... I pity the fool!"
Great job today!

I love the Easter bonnet. I want a bunny cameo pin.

April 12, 2009 | Unregistered Commentergingerzing1967

Thanks Manly John - very nice Sweets!

I am knocked out by their beauty and terribly disappointed to see that ALL the pretties are fondant. Doesn't anybody freehand buttercream any more?

REALLY glad I got all my bunny surprise cakes delivered before reading this or I would have been sad for them.... definitely not Sunday Sweets items. People love their Easter cakes so I keep trying, and entries like this one really prod me to try harder and harder. Awesome cakes!

Thanks to Cake Wrecks, following links (LOVE those links you give us!) and doing some reading, well thanks to YOU I just finished my first truffle filled Devil's Food with ganache glaze & whipped ganache rosettes and it was KILLER! Thanks John & Jen

Happy Easter

Dear John,

Thank you for helping Jen. For coming along side, and weeding out the trash from her tender eyes. (well, at least the trashy comments).

The cakes today are so pretty--too pretty to eat. Some resemble play dough, and while I have never tasted fondant---the war stories here do not make it sound that appetizing.

Today's word verification was just too interesting not to comment on: unteat.

I am not sure of the word means the removal of a teat for a "G" rated cake, or the whole weaning process featured on the baby shower cakes.

April 12, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterjoyce

I love the stump and flowers in the second one. Incredible!

April 12, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterHolly

I love the cake with the bunny hiding in the tree --- these cakes are simply amazing! I love this site!!!

That chocolate cake is fantastic, but I'm pretty sure the egg on it is a mold, and not fondant. It's just too clean. Still, fantastic! My favorite is the first one. It's just so simple and adorable!

April 12, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterLizzy Leigh

The first one has the cutest bunny EVER! I wouldn't want to eat him.
The Easter Bonnet one is beautiful, but I thought it was a pink Mad Hatter's Top Hat. Very strange but well done.

April 12, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterSuzanne Dargie

Great guest post, John, and beautiful choices. Glad to see that Jen can pass the blog into capable hands, on days when it's needed. :)

(Elfie-that sounds delicious!)

April 12, 2009 | Unregistered Commentercygirlkat

These are beautiful! The rest of the site made me giggle hardcore. I don't know if I just haven't seen it yet, or if you can (amazingly) not have one, but you really need a "Happy Birthday, Brain" cake on here. My Uncle is named Brian, and I swear there isn't a single year he doesn't get a cake wishing his brain a happy birthday. :-)

Also, I hate you (but just a little), because now I want cake.
