What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

The Day the Spaceship Earth Stood Still

Wow, is it Earth Day already? Hard to believe it's been almost a year since the Epcot Episode.

Yep, for you wreckies who've joined us in the past year, Epcot made its unintentional Cake Wrecks debut in honor of Earth Day, 2009. You can read the original post here, but in a nutshell: I posted a Spaceship Earth cake, and then made the mistake of calling it a Spaceship Earth cake. We then got about fifty billion comments (give or take fifty billion) telling us it was NOT Spaceship Earth, but Epcot. Many also helpfully pointed out that you could tell it was Epcot by the Disney font used on the cakeboard.

Now, as every Disney Geek knows, Epcot is the theme park and Spaceship Earth is the Big Golf Ballâ„¢ - and I am a huge Disney Geek. Plus, and here's the part that was especially painful/hilarious, John and I made the cake.

(Yeah, I know it's not great. That's why I posted it. However, I am one of only two or three people on the planet who've ever even attempted a Spaceship Earth cake. So, you know, I've got that going for me.)

Now, in honor of this auspicious occasion I would like to shower you with Earth and/or Spaceship Earth wrecks.

Unfortunately, despite extensive research performed during the commercial breaks for Dancing with the Stars (Go, Niecy!), I couldn't find any.

Still, I feel you deserve some kind of reward for reading this far without any new wreckage. So, here, I found you another Disney icon that's gray and round:

Piglet! What have they done to you?

Wow. Just look at the size of that head! I'm not kidding, that is a huge noggin'! It's a virtual planetoid! It has its own weather system! And it's giving me an excuse to quote Stuart Mackenzie!

Oh, and if you look closely, you can see that he recently swallowed a small globe. Or has a globe-shaped tumor growing out of his shoulder - take your pick. Whichever: Hel-looo! Earth Day tribute!

Mandy P., try to work "like Sputnik: spherical but quite pointy in parts" into as many conversations today as possible. Because the earth needs you, that's why.

I think Eeyore got all crumpled up inside one of those pathetically small "reusable" gift bags like they sell at Target in an attempt to trick you into thinking the rest of the merchandise wasn't made in a third world country where they can pollute to their heart's content, and thus cause you to feel superior to all your party mates who fell for that paper-crap which will decompose in minutes after it gets wet with party punch.

Glory be. I don't think I've laughed so hard at righteous indignation as I did over the "It's not Spaceship Earth, it's Epcot" comments! And THEN someone gets all huffy about not knowing the difference.

Google is your friend.

And btw.... that's not Piglet. That's EPCOT.

April 22, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterNancy D.

I am stymied how many people thought that Spaceship Earth was EPCOT. It actually makes me angry...very angry. And a little sad.

The "globe"/"golf ball"/"ball" at EPCOT (or EPCOT Center if you're old school) IS called SPACESHIP EARTH. It is a ride. It is a wonderful ride...or at least it was when Jeremy Irons used to do the narration.

OTOH...that is one messed up donkey!

April 22, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Wow, Jen. Kudos for revisiting this ugly little episode. As I recall, it drove you to drink last year. Hmm, were you just looking for an excuse to drink this Earth Day?

Well, whatever the motivation, well played indeed.

Isn't that first cake the thing from Epcot?

April 22, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

LMAO at RosieLB!

April 22, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterRebekah

It looks like Eeyore went on the Biggest Loser and lost too much weight too fast and has extra skin that will need to be surgically removed...

April 22, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

What an eyesore of an Eeyore.
At least he's gray; the Marketing Wizards usually make him blue.
(Is it to convey "being blue" or sad?)
He's not sad; he's just a pessimist.
I have always loved Eeyore..but I wish that it had been PC in his day for him to have had access to a bit of counseling...maybe some meds. (Yes, I know he's *eternal* and current, and Forever...but I think of him as veryvery aged. He's been around since even before me...)
I know some humans who have his *outlook* on life--which could be called their "downlook"-- and they are, frankly, a pain in the tail.
With or without nail.
Frankly, I've come to look at that nail as representing a symbolism OF a P. I. A.
(How very Freudian, Mr. Milne...!)
MAN, that's a freaky-looking cake.

Eeyore as depicted by Picasso. See? It's Art!

April 22, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterElissa

Picasso made cakes??

April 22, 2010 | Unregistered Commenterdiddleymaz

It's like they were going to make a 3D Eeyore, but then flattened him out... poor Eeyore!

April 22, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterJulie

I was recently at Epcot and I made sure to go on spaceship earth just for you!

Stuart Mackenzie FTW!

Jen -

I knew we were kindred spirits for other reasons besides making fun of other people and their silly cake creations. The Axe Murderer quote clenched it! BEST, MOST APPROPRIATE movie quote/cake reference ever. I'm touched. :)

Bahahaha, my 4 year old came in here while I was reading today's post and he says to me "Who is that?" I respond "I don't know, who is that?" He tells me "PIGLET!"

See, Jen knows what she's talking about!

April 22, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterJessica

Oh my gosh.. I just read through all of last year's EPCOT/Epcot Center/SSE/Disney debacle and I have to say that it was the best laugh I have had all week!
I am not a huge Disneyphile but I know my Disney and a few of those comments cracked me up... the things people come up with to say.

April 22, 2010 | Unregistered Commenterjennylou303

Do I get points for catching the Dr. Horrible reference? Right... Freeze Ray!

April 22, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterMrsCyg

Eek, Eeyore has goiters!

My favourite part of that scene is that LaPaglia was clearly totally cracking up for real.

April 22, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterKimberly

Eeyore must have been heading to a costume party and the only thing the costume shop had available was this over-sized pig snout.

Yeah, that HAD to be it! No other explanation!

To me, the Eeyore cake looks like someone frosted a baseball mitt...

I agree! Are there mitt-shaped cake pans?

Jen, after your So I Married an Axe Murderer comments, I thought maybe the Eeyore cake was made from Stuart Mackenzie's beloved Haggis. Blech!
I love your blog!

@ Brian,
who said:
"And yet they INSIST they are correct about being COMPLETELY wrong. (Tea Partiers anyone? Can we do politics here? ;)"
See, if the Baggers were actually insisting that they are completely wrong, they WOULD be correct!
I DON'T like the idea of politics here...(or in general, really)...beCAUSE...welll... a certain person only has to open her (did I say, "her"?) mouth to turn my brain into a pretzel'd-up, goose-bumpy, quivering mass of "IIIEEEYYEEE!"....
....don'tcha know.
Better leave lousy enough alone.

Now, back to the FUN!

So, hey, um, Jen, I just thought I'd let you know, 'cause I'm sure no one else in the 100+ comments before me has pointed this out: that weird squished-up Disney character is actually Eyeore, not Piglet.

I know because I'm a Disney fan.

My favorite Lost blog referred to Sayid as "Iraqi Eeyore" this week. It appears I have stumbled on a theme. Oh, bother.

Maybe we should call this sad offspring of Eeyore and Piglet "Eyelet"?
I L'EYEk it !!!!

Can't you just imagine the possiblities?

Eyelet could have a sister named "Veyeolet" and a brother named "Geyelet."

April 22, 2010 | Unregistered Commentersendingtheclowns

All the Disney geeks should know that the park is actually The Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow, or EPCOT, not Epcot!!!! (who's the geek now ;))

Well *I* know the difference between Epcot and Spaceship Earth. Good for you Jen! (And I thought it was a cool cake.)

Anything that leads to a Stuart quote CANNOT be a total loss. (But have you TRIED the Garth Brooks, Weekly World News juice diet?)

April 22, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterMelvira

This is an early Picasso rendition of Eeyore. Marvel at it's pre-Cubist qualities: disproportioned body shape, questionable appendages (are they legs or...), the shape of the face into the body (where is the actual lower mouth chin), etc. Exquisite my dear.

April 22, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterJulia

Perhaps the "Happy Irthday" cake would have been appropriate for today.

April 22, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterFanboy Wife

Oh, look! It's Eeyore, Salvador Dali style...

April 22, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterCharlene

I don't know that you're going to get 'Eeyore' to become the new 'Epcot' for this next year, but I'd like to say that 'Epcot' has brought me a lot of laughter.

(Although, was that ONLY a year ago...) :D

April 22, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Poor Eeyore...and as an EPCOT cast member I giggle every time I hear people calling Spaceship Earth EPCOT. Oh sillies! :P

Love you guys!

April 22, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterJessie Elyse

If Eeyore is so depressed, it might have something to do with the large goiter he's become.

April 22, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterMelanie

I think that Epcot planet thing rocks! I mean, how are you supposed to make that boring thing better than that? For a replica of a boring giant ball, it's pretty damn amazing. And good disney writing too. Poor self-deprecating cake-wreckee.

April 22, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterTrish

OK, so I went back and read the comments on the Spaceship Earth cake in your original post. I too am a Diz Geek or dizzy geek whichever it may be!!! :), and I think they must not be afterall.

OH, I am friends with the voice in the Spaceship Earth ride. OK so not the voice itself, but the man with the voice of SSE.

I like the cake and I think you did a good job personally.

April 22, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterKristan

Poor Eeyore! I think he may need a breast lift! Don't be sad, Eeyore... plastic surgery is your friend! Hollie

April 22, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

I think it's supposed to be a (misshappen, circular) baby Eeyore.

No, I know. IT'S EPCOT. You can tell by the decorator's attempt to include a Disney character. You know, Eeylet?

What do you mean that's not a real character? It's a unique and logic defying amalgam of Piglet and Eeyore. Some people call it Pigyore (which can also be used as an insult. And insults are AWESOME).

April 22, 2010 | Unregistered Commenterpurplewowies

LOVE the Heed references. Hilarious!

I had been wondering what the Epcot references were all about, but going back to last year's Earth Day post had me CRINGING for you guys. Good Lord, people! It's hilarious in a painful kind of way... or painful in a hilarious kind of way?

April 22, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterHeather

love, love, love the Axe Murderer lines, which are the most oft quoted in our house!

April 22, 2010 | Unregistered Commentergclyne

Wow. Has it been a year already since the Great Epcot Debacle? That's incredible.

I don't think I ever knew, or at the very least I didn't recall, that you made the infamous Epcot cake! It's pretty cool. :)

And poor, poor Eeyore. I won't show this to my father. :( He'd be so sad.

April 22, 2010 | Unregistered Commentershadow

Goodness me. Poor Eeyore has traded in his Prozac for doobs. Now he's just another statistic!
