What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Sunday Sweets: Haunted Tour

[Dog howling]

[rusty gate creaking]

[muffled organ music]

Knock... Knock... Knock...

By Giggy's Cakes and Sweets

Oh, hello there. Do come in. You're just in time for some Halloween "entertainment." Just brush those cobwebs aside and make your way into this unnecessarily cold and dimly-lit foyer.

Tonight, you will join me on a tour through some of the creepiest, spookiest, and most haunting Sweets we've ever featured. Are you FRIGHTENED? {Evil snicker...} Excellent.

Follow me into the next room where I have a little treat waiting for you.

This was our last visitor:

By Becky S.

We thought he'd beheaded home by now.

Ahh, and please allow me to introduce my blushing bride:

By Debbie Does Cakes

If I can be frank, our marriage is a real scream.

Follow me into the laboratory where our scientists are tinkering with a few experiments...

Submitted by Miranda P. and made by Sami L.

We'll leave him be. It looks like he's got a lot on his mind.

Do be careful walking into this next room. You never know what might cross your path.

By Sandra (socake)

Oh, don't worry; she doesn't bite... hard.

Keep your eyes peeled while you're walking through the toy room. Someone might be in there clowning around...

By Mamma Jamma Cakes

Yes, his eyes and hair have a ghoulish glow, but that's only because he's so happy to have someone new to play with.

Did you notice our Jack O' Lantern?

By Dena's Sweetly Unique Cakes

I think there's candy inside. Why don't you reach your hand in to get some?

Or grab yourself an apple! I promise they're not poisoned.

By Mamma Jamma Cakes

Although they do have a bit of a bite.

Is that a shiver I detect? Then perhaps we should avoid the basement:

By Cake Rhapsody

It tends to give people goosebumps*.

(*Modeled after the second Goosebumps book, Stay Out of the Basement.)

I'm sorry, is my little tour making your skin crawl?

By DeadBright

I could lighten things up with a few jokes. They'll have you in stitches, I promise.

Oh, and stay on your toes as we enter the old Victorian ballroom. You never know what spirits might still be dancing around in here.

Submitted by Kelinda S. and made by Cake Opera Co.

Did you feel that?

I could have sworn I saw something in the corner there.

I must be imagining things.

Well, I'm afraid you must be leaving now. The missus and I are expecting more guests this evening. But don't forget our creepies and the crawlies, our spooks and scares, our evil demons and ghostly ghouls!!

After all, we want you to sleep well tonight.

LIKE THE DEAD, in fact.

Mwuaaah haaaa haaaa!

Oh, and don't miss the gift shop on your way out; we have rock candy and postcards for 50% off!

And one last thing:

October 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMegan

Hahaha. "Unnecessarily cold and dimly lit foyer". That's great. Also, I'm totally blown away by the apple cake.

October 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMeredith

*Sniff!* Tears of joy! Loved every detail, from the lacy curtains on the first cake to the little headstones in the front yard of the last cake. Thank you, thank you, thank yoooooooooooo!!!

The cat stopped me in mid-scroll. I even called my mother over to see that work of art. Of course, they're all beautiful but that one was stunning.

Love the commentary, No. 1. :D

October 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterBarbara Anne

Those women were amazing, but I think my favorite is actually the apple. Perfect.

October 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterLiz B.

I LOVE the apple cake. The peel turning into a snake, super metaphorically-symbolical (I made that up) and it did actually give me chills. Awesome! :)

October 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterErin

The cat cake is gorgeous, the ladies are divine, the goosebumps door is awesome... But why oh why does that clown cake even have to made!?!? Scrolling down and seeing that when you first wake up = no bueno :( :( :(

October 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterCallie

Can't sleep, clowns will eat me...

October 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterSarah

That clown cake is terrifying, but I am IN LOVE with that snake/apple peel cake. It is too freaky

October 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMags

Ok... Clown cake scared me nearly to death! I wanted to look away, but I couldn't!! Eeeiiii!! The gorgeous Victorian women cakes made me feel better though. Sooo pretty! :)

October 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJabby

The apple cake was gorgeous and so clever! Wow! All the cakes were amazing as always, but I was in awe of the 'skin' cake. So simple, so well done, so CREEPY!

October 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterLinda C

Love the Bride of Frankenstein cake. Perfectly captured the character as Elsa Lancaster portrayed her in the film. Wish I'd had that for an Art Deco festival back in September.

October 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterCharly

I can't believe how realistic the skull cake is! Amazing artistry on all of them but that one is superb!

October 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterLiz

This clown will kill you........ MUWA HA HA HA!!!!!!!!!!!!! Creepiness!!!!! These cakes are so well made, and so creepy! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

October 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterHannah A

It's hard to picture you putting a clown cake on the Sweets day, but there it is! These are creepy (for the most part) but well done.

October 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterDeirdre

That clown is going to eat me while sleep tonight !!!!!

October 30, 2011 | Unregistered Commentertiny p elephant

*eyes scrunched shut, fingers in ears*

hate the clown, hate the clown, hate the clown, hate the clown, hate the clown, hate the clown....

*one eye open warily* Is it gone yet? :(

October 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterCarmiehead, the Un-Stalker

Ok, that clown cake woke me up. D=

However, the ghostly ladies make up for it. I do have to provide a mild nitpick about something, though, and please don't anyone hate me for it because I'm just stating a fact- They aren't Victorian. If I had to guess, judging from the poofy hair and even poofier gowns, I'd say Marie Antoinette's time (Georgian era).

October 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterKim

*whimpering in corner* mommy.

October 30, 2011 | Unregistered Commenteramanda

The detailing of the Marie Antoinette cake is stunning. I love all the others too, they're either goolishly delightful or delightfully goolish. But that clown...uugghh...can't unsee a clown. Ever.

October 30, 2011 | Unregistered Commentermaggiew

That apple cake is ridiculous!!!

October 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterTerraD

"Victorian" ballroom? No, those ladies are from the Ancien Regime! (Not to start an Epcot here, just want to distinguish one epoch from another VERY different one . . .)

Anyway, these cakes are so many more reasons to be glad I have an October birthday!

October 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterCakelover

That skull cake is absolutely amazing!

October 30, 2011 | Unregistered Commentercelyn

That skin cake made me shudder. So beautiful but so gross. I especially loved the apple/snake cake though. The concept and execution are amazing.

October 30, 2011 | Unregistered Commentergoog

Am I the only one who finds the bride of Frankenstein a little wrecky? Not up to the high standard set by the others, IMO.

October 30, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterteresa

I can't get over that SKULL!!! HOW do they make cake look that much like the real thing? Do they sell their souls to the, uh... Devil?

October 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterBea

Creepy clown is creepy
and I'm no longer sleepy
If anything, I'm weepy
Oh God, that clown is creepy

October 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterHelene

That skin cake was creepy.....

October 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterHollie

OMG the skin cake...I'm speechless.

October 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJessica H

Gah, there should be a warning on posts that contain creepy clowns!

October 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterKristin

Those Victorian ladies are GORGEOUS!

October 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterEG

I am trying to figure out WHY in the name of all that's holy someone had to MAKE that skin cake. Did someone seriously request a cake made to look like stapled-together skin for their wedding/birthday/some other celebration?? WHY??

(It's well done... TOO well done, lol!)

October 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterElizabeth

I love, love, love you. I'm hoping that telling you that will make this a little easier to hear read.

Those are not Victorian ghost women. I know you must feel very silly for getting it wrong, so I'm going to tell you what they are because I'm so helpful. They are actually cakes. You're welcome.

October 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterKate

I don't know... are those evil brain-sucking doozers?

October 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterR3Test

I didn't even take time to LOOK at that clown cake. My finger took over and scrolled hastily down, to save me. Almost like it was possessed....

October 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJasry

wow, those victorian ballroom women - amazing!
the apple snake cake - amazing!
the skin cake - ackmazing!
clown cake - eekmazing!
basement door cake - uh ohmazing!

October 30, 2011 | Unregistered Commentersan

Question about the clown and Georgian lady cakes: Were they meant to be creepy, or did they just turn out that way? Pretty sure the clown was meant to be creepy, not so sure about the ladies.

October 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterTim

Finally - an answer to Schroedinger's Cat! It becomes CAKE! In the best of all universes.

October 30, 2011 | Unregistered Commentergobbler

"We thought he'd beheaded home by now." I. Love. It.

October 30, 2011 | Unregistered Commenteranonymous

That skin cake is giving me cold shivers. First time I've seen a cake that I really would not be able to eat...

October 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterSimone

I really like that black cat cake.

October 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterStefanie

These are fuh-REAKING awesome!!! The skull one was my favorite until I got down to the Victorian Ladies and I just died! Wow!

October 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterBrooke

Toronto in 2 days!!!
Borrowing Petula Clark's "Downtown" tune:

When you browse Cake Wrecks and you’re safe ‘cause it Sunday
You‘ll still be scared by
Death Clown
These cakes are so lovely, not like Monday to Friday,
But I’m terrified.
Death Clown

October 30, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterzoomom

Absolutely amazing and wierdly wonderful! A tip o' the cranium to all!

October 30, 2011 | Unregistered Commentermel

Love Love Love the Goosebumps cake! Too cute!!!! That creepy clown cake however......It was enough to put me off toyboxes for a long time!

October 30, 2011 | Unregistered Commentermiss_paper

<shiver> Those were perfectly creepy cakes! I was totally awe-struck by the skull! And I loved the detail on the clown cake where you could see the eyebrows that had been covered in the white face make-up. So cool! The apple/snake cake is the one that will keep me up at was bad enough associating worms with popping out of apples, but now snakes? <shudder>

October 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterLadybug914

I wonder, is the cat cake a Schroedinger reference, or maybe it's supposed to be a "cat box" (ew)?

October 30, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterHeather

The apple cake is AMAZING - concept and execution (not the dead kind of execution). Art that's edible. Fan-flipping-tastic!
