What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

The REAL King Cake

In honor of the 34th anniversary of his death yesterday, I'd like to do an Elvis post. However, I realize many of our younger readers may not be familiar with The King. So listen up, whipper snappers! Picture an older, more talented, better looking, Southern Justin Bieber wearing a white, bedazzled jumpsuit.

...

Also, he may or may not be dead.

...

Maybe don't picture that part.

Right. All together now? Then let's get started!

This is Elvis:

Rawr! Ffft ffft...

This...

...is not Elvis.  I'm thinking either Ray Liotta or Wayne Newton.

Elvis:

Not Elvis:

John claims this looks like Jimmy Durante. It's like I don't even know who he is anymore. (John, I mean. Jimmy I had to wiki.)

Elvis:

Um...

I'm going with Liza Minelli.

Elvis:

Oh! Wait! I know this one!

The Brawny paper towel guy!

And finally, Elvis:

Annnnnd:

Queen Amidala. Or maybe one of the guys from Menudo. (Thanks, John!)

No, no, I'm staying with Amidala.

Thanks to Paula H., Diana C., Connie B., and Chrissy K. who are all, collectively, nuthin' but hound dogs. And oh! The crying! ALL the TIME! Enough, already!

Ah thank you. Thankyouverramuuuch.

Update from john: The Munsters!  The last one looks like the kid from The Munsters!  I knew it was something with an "M" from my childhood.  Thanks comment section.

The second cake looks a little like John Edwards - you know...the guy who 'talks' to dead people? Maybe he will ring up Elvis (astrophysically or via cell) and help these wreckorators out! :P

August 17, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterApril

The 2nd one is actually Zach Braff on a low-mousse day.

And the last is Eddie from the Munsters. The widow peak gives it away!

Spot-on with Liza Manelli, though.

August 17, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterNyl

Cake #1 is obviously Christopher Walken. Obviously.

August 17, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterCarol

Elvis has truly left the building.

August 17, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterSaraCVT

Nope, that last one is most definitly Eddie Munster!

August 17, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterTina

The second wreck made me think of Nixon

August 17, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMary

You're totally wrong about that last one. That cake is definitely Edward Cullen of Twilight.

August 17, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMonica

I was thinking that first cake looked more like Christopher Walken. Maybe the cake needed more cowbell.

August 17, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterLydia

Actually, I thought Jimmy Durante's nose, but on Fred Rogers. And maybe that's Ray Liotta AS Wayne Newton?

August 17, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterjunebug

Okay, the last one reminds me of Eddie from the Munsters. lol

August 17, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterRachel H.

I think the second one is an excellent rendering of Steve Buscemi.

August 17, 2011 | Unregistered Commentersarah

This post is a total example of why I refuse to do cakes trying to recreate actual faces. that's why we have edible images. :)

August 17, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterTrevor

I feel like I'm in a Sesame Street episode
"One of these things is not like the others,
One of these things just doesn't belong,
Can you tell which thing is not like the others
By the time I finish my song?"

Unfortunately in this case there is more than one.

August 17, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterKristen

The last one is Jerry Lewis, isn't it obvious?

August 17, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJoely

I was going to say Eddie Munster on the last one, too. Hopefully this doesn't turn into Epcot

August 17, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterSaraV

But if Elvis is everywhere, and Elvis is everything, and Elvis is everybody, not to mention, still the King, then could everyone have a bit of Elvis in them? After all, none of the cakes look like the Anti-Elvis.... So, technically speaking, the individuals the cakes look like could be calling on their inner Elvis...

(Michael J Fox still doesn't have any Elvis in him. Sorry.)

For those that get this, admit it, it's all stuck in your head now.

August 17, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterIsabella

I definately agree the last one is Eddie Munster and the one you thought was the Brawny guy is Michael Landon from Bonanza.

August 17, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAlexis

The last one definitely looks like the young kid from The Munsters.

August 17, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJess

Elvis looks WAY more delicious in the photos than on the cakes...

August 17, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterCourtney

Wow. Some people should never draw faces. I'm one of those people, but I know better than to try to make a living drawing faces, at least!

August 17, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAllison

Thank you for not sharing bloated Elvis... can you just imagine that massacre in cake :P Blahhhhh

August 17, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterKimberj

Now that I've stood on my head to try to see the Elvis in each of these wrecks (my office mates are thankful I'm not wearing a skirt today)....These wrecks need to have their eyes and perceptions adjusted...No Elvis likenesses in any of these wrecks! Now...the photos...mmmmmhhhhmmmm....Yowza!

August 17, 2011 | Unregistered Commentermiss_paper

That one needs a Brawny paper towel to mop up the hot mess at the top of that cake. What IS it anyway? Oozing donuts? My eyes are starting to hurt. Must. Look. Away.

August 17, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJulie G. from Iowa

The last wreck looks like John Travolta as Vinnie Barbarino to me, but I never watched The Munsters.

A few years ago I saw Elvis on the Green Line here in Boston. I don't know where he is now, though.

August 17, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJoan

I thought the Jimmy Durante one looked more like Don Knotts and I was surprised when I scrolled to the caption of the last one and saw that neither one of you initially saw Eddie Munster. :)

[Editor's note- I know, right?! I was standing behind Jen and I was like, "I want to say 'Menudo' but I don't think that's right! Mmmmmah, mmmmmeh, mmmmmih. I give up. The comment section will know."]

August 17, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterkaisee

Isabella -
Actually, what I now have in my head is:
"If you ain't got Mojo Nixon, your store could use some fixin'!"

August 17, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterCarol

it's not the brawny guy (though the red complexion makes that a good guess). It is, in fact, Tom Jones! look, you'll see it. All he needs is a pair of granny panties thrown at him.

August 17, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterLizard

Brawny Paper Towel guy... hee hee
I'll be different and say Adam Lambert on the last one. But it really doesn't matter... they are all horrifying.

Waaaaiiit.... are those DONUTS on that Brawny cake?!?!?!

August 17, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterFluffy Cow

Elvis is dead, the cakewrecks prove it. That one does look like Lize... after a characturist. Other ones do look like Elvis era comercials or else something some knockup artist threw together at the alst moment. Either way, at 25, I know Elvis when I see his picture, and those cakes are not Elvis. Got any good Elvis cakes?

August 17, 2011 | Unregistered Commentershikiblade

This would be one of the few good uses for edible paper printing on a cake...too avoid messes like these!

August 17, 2011 | Unregistered Commentersue

I think Jimmy Durante Elvis would be happy to find himself sitting between the egg salad and the Chex Mix. Didn't Elvis sing a song called, "Egg Salad Annie?"

August 17, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterSuBee

You had to Wiki Jimmy Durante? Ha cha cha!

August 17, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterCurrer Bell

Yup, def. Don Knotts in the second one.

August 17, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterme

Elvis hasn't left the building...he was never in the building to start with...he was in a limo driving very fast away from this particular building in order to disassociate himself from these cakes!

August 17, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterCaroline B

I think the second one looks like a cross between Captain Kirk and Spock!

August 17, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMichelle S

Do these people even know what Elvis looks like?? D:

August 17, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMINDY1

I used Google Goggles to take pictures of the Elvi and this is what it came up with:
Cake 1 (Liota Elvis)- Paul McCartney from the Beatles cartoon
Cake 2 (Durante Elvis)-A chinchilla
Cake 3 (Elvis with a Z)-an absolutely gruesome photo of people doing CPR on an accident victim.
Cake 4 (Brawny Elvis)-The corpse of a goblin shark.
Cake 5 (Elvie Munster)-A chinchilla

So, what have we learned?
A. None of the cakes look anything like Elvis.
B. Elvis looked somewhat like a chinchilla
C. I'm home sick and have too much time on my hand.
D All of the above

August 17, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterSuBee

Are they all banana and peanutbutter on the inside?

August 17, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterKatja Boumans

Good call by the hubs on Jimmy Durante! hachachacha!

August 17, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterLeslie Y.

The first one is definitely Shakin' Stevens. And brawny guy could well be Tom Jones.... And none of them look like something I want to eat.

August 17, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterNette

I'm always amazed at how someone can turn one of the most gorgeous faces God ever made into a frightenly ugly piece of "art". THAT takes some talent!

August 17, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJamie S.

Long live the King. (But let those cakes be sort lived... please God... I'll never ask for anything ever again.)

August 17, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMelvira

Toooooooo funny! In recalling a previous blog...it seems "King" cakes are a problem for a lot of people....auh, thank you, thank you very much.........(throws scarf.....)

true story: the day Elvis (may or may not have) died, a secretary at work was so upset, the next day she wore a black bra in his honor...under her translucent white blouse....you just don't see that kind of sheer grief anymore....

August 17, 2011 | Unregistered Commentermel

I think the Brawny Elvis looks more like OJ Simpson than anything else! That's the first thing that came to mind... the others are scary!

August 17, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterBrobee

If he wasn't dead before seeing this, he is now.

August 17, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterPriscilla

I thought the second cake looked like Don Knotts. And I love Don Knotts enough that I wish someone would put his face on a cake for me--just as long as it's not supposed to look like Elvis.

August 17, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterCori

I wonder what other wonders can be found at
www.ElvisRomania.ro ?

August 17, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMe

I totally agree with Joely on the last cake! The first person that came to my mind was Jerry Lewis, too.
That's a lot of black hair and really big lips. Def Lewis circa Cinderfella!

August 17, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterHeatherB

second to last looks more like Gaston from Beauty and the Beast.
final looks kinda like the kid from Grudge.

August 17, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterDouglas

That's it, Brobee! I was struggling for a name there. And for the first one, I saw Donnie Osmond. No?
