What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

I don't like any of these cakes except for the all-white one and maybe the half-white one. They're all too busy and ugly and look a bit tacky, less is more sometimes :/

[Editor's note- I always wonder what it is that compels a person to take time out of her day to say something negative about something beautiful. Perhaps it's just the anonymity of the internet. Ah well. For what it's worth, the blue poppy cake is probably the best cake I've seen on Sweets in quite some time. Try to have a pleasant day and may your negativity not affect those around you. -john (thoJ)]

One of my favorite songs, and that was pulled off beautifully! Well done! :)

Hello! Another amazing round of Sunday Sweets! So inspirational :-) A while ago, I think I saw a Sunday Sweet cake that was iphone app floating up off the cake. Now I can't find it, but know I am not creative enough to have dreamed it! Do you remember that cake?

November 11, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterPeggy

The last one. Oh. Wow.
And Sharyn, I heard the Genie's voice before I saw anything other than the title.

November 11, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterspidey

Amazing cakes, but I need to stop reading the text. This song has been stuck in my head for 45 minutes. Aaarrrggghhhhh....

November 11, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterLauren

Beautiful cakes, brilliant parody, Sharon. For those who don't know the song:

I can show you the caaakes, shining, shimmering, splendid
Tell me, Princess, now when did you last let your stomach decide?
I can open your mouth, take you wonder by wonder,
Over, sideways, and under on a magic fondant ride,

A whole new Sweeeeeets!
All new fantastic daisy cakes!
No one to tell us no, or what to do,
Or say it can't be dooone!

A whole new Sweets!
That's where we'll be!
A thrilling cake!
A wonderous place!

For you and meeeeeeeee~

Awesome. And the brown one doesn't look like poo at all…"He can be taught!"

November 11, 2012 | Unregistered Commentercorie

Lol. Love it and did "hear" it in Genie's voice.

November 11, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterErin

If that brown one is covered in chocolate and not fondant, then I could happily fall face-down into it and experience death by chocolate. YUM!

Do they specially train people on how to cut into cakes like these? Because I don't know if I could actually cut up and serve creations this beautiful.

November 11, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterTLC

Beautiful! haha idk @Loz what kind of awesome world you live in, where the cakes clearly transcend these jaw-dropping, talant-teaming beauties, but I would love to live there someday! :D

November 11, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterStoich91

The Tiffany cake is scarily impressive, and the daisy cake made me squee. But my favorite was the first one - that little detail of the bent cage bars just made my heart melt; how much more romantic can a cake get?

November 11, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterIkwig

I'm sorry but I just want to see the wrecks of those cakes. They would be awesome!!

November 11, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterPennyJG

Fantastic. All of them. Wow. Loz, if you call these tacky, how would you describe the wedding cakes that appear in non-Sweet posts?

November 11, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMorag

how funny - your first poster doesn't like any of the cakes EXCEPT the one i don't really love. huh. well, whatever works for you. anyway...
as always, some truly amazing work on these cakes. i am particularly impressed with the all white and (almost) all chocolate cake. they've managed to get a lot of depth and texture but with a very very limited color palette. this is a pretty impressive feat!
congrats to them and all the bakers for their great work!

November 11, 2012 | Unregistered Commentermickeyp415

I have to agree with Loz, while the bakers obviously have skill and talent, I find the composition of most of them unsettling-way too much going on. The best were the all-white and daisy, the rest were seizure-inducing. More isn't always better, sometimes it's just more.

November 11, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterdiane

i would love to know the story behind the half'n'half cake. anyone?

November 11, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterLcP

Oh soo pretty :D

November 11, 2012 | Unregistered Commentermindy1

I normally love all the sunday cakes! These just seem too cluttered. There's definitely a fine line before it's too much and subjectively I think these have crossed it.

November 11, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterLoz

That was a wonderful parody! Absolutely loved it - and the cakes weren't bad, either!

November 11, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterLMP

I sang along to this post because that's one of my all time favorite movies, thank you! Also, there may be clutter on some of these cakes, but overall they are amazing. The amount of skill involved, how much time it would take and the artistry - I'm in awe.

November 11, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterDegera

Can your friends do this? (waa waa WA) Can your friends do that? (NANANANANA!) CAN YO' FRIENDS PULL THIS, OUT THEIR FROSTING BAAAAAGS

I love Aladdin!

November 11, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJenna

I immediately heard the title in Genie's voice before even reading the rest. My hubby is now singing "Friend Like Me" in the kitchen. The Genie is his all-time favorite Disney character EVER.

I like all these cakes, and I absolutely love all except maybe the first two which are not my "style" but still amazingly well-executed and gorgeously detailed. If I had to pick one favorite I'd have to toss a coin between the blue flowers and the daisy cake that is second-to-last.

November 11, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterKat

Daisies !!

November 11, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterDiddleymazi

Then call me tacky. I felt like I do at the Rose Parade, where each float is more incredibly intricate and unbelievably detailed than the last. But then, I love the Rose Parade, and I suppose many don't.

November 11, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterKay

First time I've sung my way through a CW post. I bow to you, again.

November 11, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterLo

As much as I love the re-worded songs, I tend to scroll fast through those posts and don't get to experience each cake-y wonder (or wreck). I appreciate when you guys take the time to describe each cake just a little bit, usually hinting at some tiny part that I would normally miss. (Just my 2 cents!)

November 11, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterBeth

Do we get extra extra geek points if we "hear" Dan Castellaneta singing it?

November 11, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterSharon

Sharyn, I'm so happy you're writing for cakewrecks now. These cakes + that song = awesome.

November 11, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAmberK

That watering can is exquisite! And those doilies on the 2nd cake look like she took the ones my grandma crocheted and pasted them right onto the cake. Excellent.

November 11, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJen

Jaw-droppingly beautiful creations. I lingered over each picture trying to absorb every detail.

P.S. Did anyone besides me read "The Fondant Finger" instead of "The Fondant Flinger" as the creator of the third cake? Ha!

November 11, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterCarol

Robin Williams FOREVER!!!!!!!!!!

November 11, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAidan

That Tiffany cake has been posted before. A few times actually.

November 11, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterHannah h.

Who else had to "read" the song before going back up and scrutinizing these amazing cakes??

November 11, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterrouschkateer

Those are gorgeous!

November 11, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterBookwyrme

I don't comment often, but these were too amazing not to say something!! Where did you FIND these? I think this post, the India one, and the Japan one are my absolute favorites ever. Absolutely stunning!

November 11, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterKathleen

I love this website. I really do. But I just have to say that the frequent posts inspired by Disney (etc.) songs, but with cake-themed (etc.) words, is getting a little stale. Clearly not all readers agree as the comments are so frequently filled with readers' own cake-themed songs based on popular tunes. I'm thinking that maybe the excessive use of this approach is due to the frequency of guest posts. Perhaps all the posters throughout the week don't coordinate with each other and realize that there are so many other song-centered posts back to back. Maybe I'm alone and the rest of the world just can't get enough of these, but I really miss the days of Jon and Jen related their cakes of the day to some funny story in their own lives or when they make up a story centered around the cake theme for the day, notably, "The Story of Amber." I applaud your "art" and attempts at lyricism, but please, please, let's limit these types of post to, say, once a month. Even once a week.

November 11, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJessica

How do you even decide which one is your favorite! Amazing. Would love to know some prices, 'cause I would think that they could cost an arm and a leg and another leg!

November 11, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterBeckie

Awww, there's just no pleasing some of us. I agree with Beth that I scroll through lyrics posts faster, but not having one of Sharyn's songs is painful, and we haven't convinced her to add a song in the comments on her own non-lyrical posts.

November 11, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterHappy Camper

How perverse is it that after oohing and ahhing, my primary reaction to Sunday Sweets is always to think, Oooooh, I can't wait to see the wrecks based on that one!

November 11, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAlicia

So excited to finally see the Fondant Flinger on Sunday Sweets! She's an old high school friend of mine (as is the submitter) and an amazing cake artist. Everyone should check out her Facebook page. Also, sweet that she was featured on Veterans' Day, since she is a devoted Coastie wife.

November 11, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterLee

@Carol- up! missed the L, too :D

does anyone know the name of the blue flower represented? it's breath-taking and I want to look at real ones to see how they look (or am I a moron and the baker just created it?).

@Sharyn LOVE the parody and now I'm off to watch that movie for the...hmm, I'm way past all my own fingers and toes- gonna have to call in reinforcements to figure that out!

November 11, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterBarbara Anne

I really, really like that Tiffany cake. Beautiful.

November 12, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterWill

I thought of the Genie when I read the title of the post. And I want the brown cake.

November 12, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterPrudynce

I love all these! Too pretty to cut!!

November 12, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterPat

I'm with Loz and Diane - I think everyone has a different threshold and most of these cakes have crossed mine! The all white and the daisy one are nice (although even the daisy one is a bit cluttered). That doesn't take away from the fact that I can clearly see some amazing techniques being applied in these cakes - I just wish they had stopped a bit sooner.

So glad that there are so many different styles and preferences out there so we can ALL see and drool over the cakes that make us happy... Love CW and all it stands for! Oh, and I too have gotten in trouble for taking a picture of a cake at a local grocery store bakery. =)

November 12, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMBS

Yes, let's complain some more about how the completely free humorous cake blog doesn't live up to your standards on every. single. post. they do.

I know I couldn't do as well as Jen, John, and the rest of the cake wrecks crew. Sure, not every post is my favorite, some I like better than others, but overall this place makes me smile.

Thanks guys for all you do, keep on being awesome.

November 12, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterKat

Free to the visitors, sure, but it's not like someone isn't making money off the website. You don't get a book deal if your website doesn't generate traffic and interest.

November 12, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJessica

Your first commenter said they didn't like any of them... and yeah some of them are busy, but I LOVED the first one! I'd love to remarry my husband and have that as our cake!

November 12, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterStacyQ

Cakes like these aren't for everyone's taste, sure, but that doesn't mean that they aren't beautifully made.

@Sharyn ~ I just love you. You have an amazing talent!!!
