What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

A Comic Situation

Thanks to Michele for the Starr wreck-porting.

(note from john - wait... what?!  We posted this cake on April 12th?!?!  I guess that's what you get for writing a post at 3 am.  Bwoops.)

Yea! A post with my comic name sake in it. As a little kid there were very few Brenda's around and so I had a peculiar bond with Brenda Starr. This made my morning!

Sung to Veggie Tale’s “The Pirates Who Don’t Do Anything”

The Pirates Who Bake Cakes Anyway

Arr, arr, arr, arr

We are the pirates who bake cakes anyway
We just turn out cakes that will confound
And if you ask us what it’s supposed to say
We’ll just roll our eyes. Can’t you read anyway?

Well we’ve never been to cake school
And we never watch Food Network
And you might find it surprising we’ve had no training at all
You asked for a “star with 2 Rs”
That’s exactly what we made you
It’s all you fault and we’re not taking the fall

We are the pirates who bake cakes anyway
We just turn out cakes that will confound
And if you ask us what it’s supposed to say
We’ll just roll our eyes. Can’t you read anyway?

Well we’ve never rolled out fondant
And our buttercream is iffy
And we don’t follow directions if we write them down at all
You just seem to be so angry
And that right hook was uncalled for
Don’t you know when you hit cucumbers they fall?

We are the pirates who bake cakes anyway
We just turn out cakes that will confound
And if you ask us what it’s supposed to say
We’ll just roll our eyes. Can’t you read anyway?

Well we think the border looks fine
And we wrote out “Happy Birthday”
And we piped two pretty flowers, not too big and not too small
And you say the cake’s moronic
And it isn’t what you asked for
And that we’ll be back on Cake Wrecks in the fall

We are the pirates who bake cakes anyway
We just turn out cakes that will confound
And if you ask us what it’s supposed to say
We’ll just roll our eyes. Can’t you read anyway?

Oh NO! Jen, could we possibly be at the end of the wreckiverse? We have seen the "Starr" cake before. Why the recycling? Didnt you get the lovely picture of the pustule cake i sent you? Still, great site. Darlin you're still the be eest that i evah had.

Perfect assembly, Jen.

I kept looking at this trying to figure out what was disturbing me (other than the name thing) and then I realized the border and the flowers were all done with the same tip. Not sure WHY it bothers me, it just does. Seems to make it a little off-kilter...head tilting

See, I got there in four steps! And I didn't even use any bone borders or albino cacti! I bet I could skip the first day of wreckerator school!

June 5, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterDB

Another priceless Sharyn "tune" to start off my morning. At least they got the "I Can't Believe It's Not Buttercream" really smooth!

June 5, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterDonna`

Hey, TECHNICALLY, they gave her exactly what she asked for... TECHNICALLY...

June 5, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterBADKarma

Sharyn, I think I love you.

June 5, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterKdot

This is great! Brings back all kinds of wonderful memories from thirty-six days ago. But seriously, I love Brenda Starr and this post made me chuckle.

June 5, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterNaomi

Sharyn please write a song book XD XD as for the cake, talk about taking things literally D:

June 5, 2012 | Unregistered Commentermindy1

Ehh, it's funnier this time around. The addition of the comic (especially the "pow!") makes this an instant classic!! :D

June 5, 2012 | Unregistered Commenteranony mouse

Lol @ Sharyn. I love Veggie Tales! I think I'll have to dig out my copy of Jonah now.

I remember seeing this cake not too long ago, but the comic book presentation makes it even funnier. Thanks!

Talk about deja vu. Although, I do like this version so much better.

I give it a gold starr.

June 5, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterangie

The repeat is totally worth it just for Sharyn's song version! Love it :)

June 5, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterkhiemstra

Sigh, if only I could remember half the things I need to remember every day as well as I can remember that you already posted this cake. Just shows how important you are to me compared to everything else.

Well, I started my morning like every other - perusing the comments I missed from yesterday's post. There must have been quite a kerfuffle because the comments are off! Which, is fine with me because I get to say kerfuffle (I'm sure all of Haiku Joy's kidlets know that one), however, I am sorry to have missed the Epcot.

Hopefully, Craig's lab down in the Bunker basement was not disrupted in the brouhaha.

How is Theardare holding up? I'm afraid the hurly-burly might have caused a relapse for the poor dear. He may need another saucer of warm milk laced with sleeping pills.

So, I was not at all surprised to find a revised STARR post.

@Sharyn: Hooray for Veggie Tales!

@DB: Hee!

June 5, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAndrea

Can I demand a guest appearance or two as a poster from Sharyn?
Like if you guys go on vacation have Sharyn do songs for the whole week?

June 5, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterDread Pirate Robyn

Maybe the "RR" was supposed to be a sexy growl.
Brenda would have loved that.

June 5, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterSuBee

I don't recall seeing this cake before (and the Unsee Machine didn't exist, then), so it's new to me. Not really unsee-worthy (see what I did there?) in any case. I do wonder if the 'decoration' is the only frosting on the cake.

No damage to the lab -- the outage appears to be confined to yesterday's comments.

Theardare is fine, I'm sure -- in addition to wrecks, he just has this 'thing' about people who question whether certain weekday cakes are wrecks. They (the people, not the cakes) tend to wind up in 'Room 5' (the number read as binary), listening to songs that were unaccountably popular in previous decades, and over-dramatized poetry readings. (Thank goodness he hasn't discovered 'nogoV' poetry!)

June 5, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterCraig

Thanks for the update, Craig.

*whispering* If I ever question the wreckiness of a posted cake, I will be sure to take Sharyn's cue and do it in igPay atinLay. I wouldn't know how to post it in binary code. Does Google have a translator for that? ; )

June 5, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAndrea

@Andrea -- Google has an igPay atinLay translator, too. I discovered it AFTER arynShay had almost finished the comment. My hubby is my binary translator.

@Craig -- Are you sure Theardare doesn't have his own "Unsee Machine?" Or possibly one of those Men in Black "flashy thingies?" You see, I've been noticing a few things lately that (FLASH)
...wait, what was I saying?

June 5, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterSharyn

As soon as I saw the comment to the tune of VeggieTales, I knew it had to be Sharyn! LOL You, woman, are brilliant.

So are you, Jen, even if you accidentally recycled a wreck :) Honestly, if you hadn't mentioned it, I wouldn't have even known :)

June 5, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJules

careful, Andrea! Theardare has very good hearing.

I think I'm sorry I missed the excitement yesterday but I'm not sure. think I'll just enjoy today and rroll with it.

June 5, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterBarbara Anne

I second the motion for Sharyn doing guest posts when possible. I played the Veggie Tales song while reading Sharyn's lyrics. So much fun!

I think there should be a video contest as well. Some time, some place, all your fans singing Sharyn's songs. Woot!

And no worries about repeats. Love the way you dressed it up!

June 5, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterTLC

@Sharyn, his own unsee machine / memory zapper might be what Theardare has been working on. But I can't quite grasp the intent. I know cats are devious, but this takes the...well, you know.

@Barbara Anne, not sure how to explain yesterday without risking re-igniting it. Let's just say that the comments that weren't posted must have been much worse than the wrecks. I really feel for J&J at a time like that.

@Andrea, there are a lot of binary / decimal converters on the web. It's actually easy to do. I'd explain it, but I don't feel like listening to another 16-hour Manilow marathon when Mr. Have Gun, Will Travel cracks the code. Even if I am intrigued by how / why Manilow almost always wound up in C, no matter what key he started in.

"I write the songs that make the whole world sing..." Great -- now I have to build an unhear machine. That's unheard of.

June 6, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterCraig

Well at least the flowers are sort of pretty..even if that background is very yellow. Ah well it could have been worse I suppose as I know there are even more disturbing cakes just waiting to meet my acquaintance and scar me for life lol.

June 6, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterArlene

Am I the only one who thinks the first image of Brenda Starr bares a STRIKING resemblance to Wynona Judd??? Seriously, go back and look. Its Wynona in cartoon form.

June 6, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJessica

Dear Sharyn,

I love you. That is all.

June 7, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMelindaB

Can I suggest that you triple-post this in another four months, but with a guest appearance by Ringo Starr?

It could become a tradition . . .

June 16, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterHP

I am so late commenting on this, but that cartoon lady? Totally Winonna Judd. (3 n's and 2 d's)
