What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

What's Wrong With This Picture?

Murphy wanted one of the Avengers on his birthday cake. I'll give you two guesses which one:

"By Grabthar's hammer, by the suns of Warvan, YOU SHALL BE AVENGED."

To be fair, it's not like the character's name was written right on that big piece of plastic or anyth...

Well, look on the bright side, Murphy: now you've got a cool new nickname, and your Iron Man cake probably would have looked like this anyway:

Thanks to Molly P. and Deborah for letting me work in a good Galaxy Quest quote. Never give up! Never surrender! Can you form some sort of rudimentary lathe?

Sung to the original Spiderman Theme (It was the obvious choice...)

Iron Man, Iron Man
Hammer's part of his iron plan
He borrowed it from Thor
That's what his super friends are for
Look out!
They've smelted Iron Man!

On the bright side, I'm sure Murphy's mom got a discount, so, "By Grapthar's hammer... what a savings."

(Look! I have one job on this lousy ship, it's *stupid*, but I'm gonna do it! Okay?)

....At least the lettering is pretty? And it's all spelled correctly?

January 2, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterAmanda H.

Love the WALL-E reference, Sharyn.

January 2, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterCyberjar88

Obviously the decorator is a miner.

("Minors! Not 'miners'!")

Ahh! Love GQ!

January 2, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterTammy

Are we sure this is a fail ? Because sometimes people want things written on cakes that make absolutely no sense to anyone else but them. Just something to consider.

January 2, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterCrissy

I have so much love for this post for many reasons. But, most all, because you used a Galaxy Quest quote!

January 2, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterLynaa

are you sure that "Iron Man" cake isn't a bloody wife beater T-shirt?

January 2, 2013 | Unregistered Commenteranonymous

It took me a moment to realize the second one wasn't supposed to be a piece of raw meat.

January 2, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterHeather

@Amanda H. Yes, the lettering is pretty, and spelled right. And it is even in the right colors, so how could they miss the fact that Thor is TOTALLY the wrong character??? I thought MAYBE (since bakers can't read) they thought he was the Man of Iron requested. Then I noticed the coloring was perfect for Iron Man. Well, there went that attempt to credit their intelligence!

January 2, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterMommy23Melody

Bwahahaha. I wonder about people sometimes... Sharyn, perfect song :D

January 2, 2013 | Unregistered Commentermindy1

Murphy, don't be Thor,
even if, on your birthday,
your cake got threwed up.

January 2, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterHaiku Joy

Galaxy Quest for the win! *Does the rolling help?*

Also, peeps: PLEASE tell me we're not going to the Epcot bunker over whether or not this is an actual wreck... For crying out loud, the year is only 2 days old! A little humanity, please!

January 2, 2013 | Unregistered Commentermichelej

it looks like that second cake is decorated with cooked strips of pig....making it both a verb and a noun: bakin' cake.....

January 2, 2013 | Unregistered Commentermel

"By Grabthar's Hammer'.... SNERK... Snicker... (spewing coffee)... BWA, HAHahAHAhahAhahAHAhaHAhahAhaha...

"ROCK, ROCK, ROCK, ROCK... etc."

January 2, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterBADKarma

Good lord, I thought that was bacon on the second cake. Mmmmm, bacon.

January 2, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterdutchgirl

I think that last one is made from Kep-mok blood ticks. (Just like mother used to make.)

January 2, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterZoomom

Don't feel bad, Heather... *I* looked at the second one and saw a plus-size swimsuit spread on a bloody field.

(Don't laugh! A swimsuit *does so* relate to Iron Man, really. The triathletic competition, anyway. Those people swim, and they're probably chafed bloody by the end of the biking and running parts, right??) (And now I think of it, they're probably pretty Thor when it's over, too.).

Whoever designed this should be SHOT!

January 2, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSaraCVT

"What is its motivation? You were never serious about the craft!"

January 2, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSalannB

Iron Man: "Dude, I'm a rich genius. I don't do birthday cake appearances. Get Thor to do it. OR, if you really want to liven things up, get the Hulk...."

@Heather: that's what I thought!

January 2, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterAndrea

NEVER have a cup of coffee near your lips and read Cakewrecks at the same time. It always ends in disaster.

Also, did anyone else think of 'Fringe' when they saw the iron man CCC (ptooie!). Y'know the episode where people have their facial features sealed over with skin?

Also, ALSO, 100 gazillion geek points to Sharyn for quoting 'Galaxy Quest". My personal fav is "What is this thing? There's no useful purpose for there to be a bunch of chompy, crushy things in the middle of a hallway! It makes no logical sense! Why is it HERE ?!?!"

January 2, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterDev

I'm on a new device; it put a capital on "zoomom" on my previous comment, but it's still me!

January 2, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterzoomom

Wow,a Beggin' Strips cake!!

January 2, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterThe Former CB

And now I hear Alan Rickman in my head - thank you so much for giggle!

January 2, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterLori T.

Ah, Galaxy I love thee and Jen for using quotes from thee!

Sharon - perfect, perfect use of a quote!

January 2, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterlisadh

Have you ever thought that maybe you're the plucky comic relief?

January 2, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterAnne

I love the Galaxy Quest reference! Now you've done it. I'm going to have to watch that DVD tonight!

January 2, 2013 | Unregistered Commentermargo

Too funny! If I were to ask for a "Galaxy Quest" cake, I wonder what I would get. Rock monster, miners, sigourney Weaver's cleavage?

January 2, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterK8brandt

There's a Robocop joke in there somewhere, too. Waiting for one to coalesce.

January 2, 2013 | Unregistered Commentermike k

Rudimentary lathe ba ha ha ha ha!!!! Love it!

January 2, 2013 | Unregistered CommenteraMY

@Merry: I applaud the cheesiness of your pun. Nicely executed.

New Year resolution: See Galaxy Quest before end of January. I almost feel like I need to turn in my geek card because I haven't seen the whole thing.

January 2, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSaraV

If I hadn't known it was *supposed* to be Iron Man, I totally thought #2 was Cassandra from Doctor Who with her eyes shut..

January 2, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterScaperMama

What about the pig-lizard?

"It was inside out....And then it exploded."

Love GQ!!

January 2, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterKirsten

Don't worry, the baker can just activate the Omega 13 and fix the cake... Oh rats, now he put Doctor Doom on there. Well, they're almost the same guy, right?

January 2, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterTechyDad

My 13yr just shook her head and commented that her brother (6) would be very upset if he got that. (Truth be told she said he'd be pissed, but didn't know if that kind of language was allowed. Lol).

January 2, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterLeah Good

(head tilted, looking at the 2nd cake) The animal is inside out. And it exploded.

January 2, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterKellyH

The second cake reminds me of the exploding pig on GQ (it's inside out ..... and it exploded!). But, .......I'm just jazzed about being on the show!

January 2, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJoy

So what is the second "cake?" I've turned it a couple of directions and I'm still clueless. Someone dropped off the package from the deli/meat counter?

January 2, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterNorine

Maybe it is Thor himself wishing Iron Man Murphy a Happy B-Day?????

January 2, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterBCpam

Hmm, let's go through our wreckerator checklist:

1. Good penmanship - CHECK
2. Correct spelling - CHECK
3. Correct character - I'll cancel this out because of the first two

Oh, how my standards have fallen....

January 2, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterDaisy

"Never give up, never surrender."
Unless you are a wreckerator, then please, please give up your icing bag.

January 2, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterRikki

@mel ~ "bakin' cake" Bhahahahaha

@Merry ~ very nicely done!

Poor poor Murphy. Hopefully his presents made up for the wreckerators stupidity...

January 2, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJodee in WA

To use MY fave Galaxy Quest quote... "That was a hell of a thing!"

January 2, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterLee

hahahahahahaaa oh my lord, Haiku Joy, you are killing me

January 2, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterDegera

It looks like he's HOLDING an iron--is there a superhero who does that??

January 2, 2013 | Unregistered Commentercarrie

Theardare's tail is twitching... [pre-emptive ear scratch]

#1 I would love this cake for my dog, Murphy, who turns a healthy & reasonably active 16 this month.

#2 I see bacon.

Sorry, my train of thought derailed. What was I saying? Oh yes...bacon.

January 2, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterCraig

I thought those white squiggles at the top were supposed to be abstract figures in martial arts poses. I guess I have an over-active imagination. Lightning? Oh. Okay, I can see that too.

January 2, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterCasey

Is Meaty Iron Man related to Bacon Bieber?

January 2, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterLaxmom

The god of war rode out one day
Upon his favourite filly.
"I'm THOR!" he cried.
The horse replied,
"You forgot the thaddle, thilly."
