What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

The Far Side of Cake, Vol. 6

Suddenly, through forces not yet completely understood, the center of the soccer field turned into a black hole.

They were a cheerful group, bobbing and dancing through the summer breezes, but somehow little miss scared-of-heights always managed to spoil the moment.

Harold tried not to let others' labels define him, but some days were harder than others.

Thanks to Helen L., Katherine S., & Melissa M., for the "hahahaawwwww!"

At least the "black hole" cake comes with a warning...

Sung to "That's Amore"

Wheeeeeeennnnnn the cake eats your guys and nobody knows why...
That's the Far Side
When the rest all seem fine but that one balloon whines...
That's the Far Side
Hairy thing, ding-a-ling-a-ling, ding-a-ling-a-ling
And we'll sing, "Steady, fella!
It's OK, don't heed what they say, 'cause you look
Very bella!

When the cakes catch your eye and you're wondering why
That's the Far Side....

October 3, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSharyn

Seriously!? They originally wanted to charge $25 for a bunch of plastic figures bowled over by a pea soup tsunami? ("Ah! The next waves are coming from all directions!!!")

October 3, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterShirley Fowley

I wonder why the price on that first one was reduced.

October 3, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterKate

Now we know why it's reduced...

October 3, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSaraCVT

I feel so bad for Harold. Like I want to take him home and feed him cookies and love him and pet him and brush out his hair and tell him he is good little monster that shouldn't care what others think of him.

October 3, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterHolly Folly

Sharyn hehehe. that last cake is kind of cute :D

October 3, 2013 | Unregistered Commentermindy1

Aaawww, poor Harold. He really is rather cute!

October 3, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterGingerSnap

Good eye, SuBee! I didn't even notice the sticker at first. It's always good to be safety conscious ;)

Sharyn, yet another fantastic song! :D

The Far Side series of posts are among my favourites. I love how you nail the commentary, Jen. It's very Larson-esque.

Thoughts on a rainy day….

Soccer players, lying down,
On each face, I think a frown,
And, the reason, I deduced:
They saw their cake had been reduced.

Soccer shirts of different hue,
Two are white, one green, one blue.
Three teams take the soccer field,
But the rules say one must yield.
No, all can play, judges decide,
‘Cause after all, this is the Far Side.

* * * * *

Five balloons take to the air,
All having fun, floating there,
Except for one, who starts to squirm,
“Put me down, for I’m a sperm.”

* * * * *

“Hairy thing!” the pink one shrieked.
“That isn’t nice – you must have peeked!”

Youngest Daughter looked at the first cake, looked at me and said, "Mom, what is that?" I gave her Jen's version. This time she looked at me with eyebrows raised. "Mo-oom! It's probably just a cake where all the stuff fell down." (Probably?) "Yes, but isn't it funnier to think of it this way?" No response but a sideways glance. She's 10, and I'm already senile. I shudder at the years to come.

October 3, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSaraCVT

At least the balloons didn't look like...well... at least they looked like balloons.

October 3, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterakathleen

Love that last one!!
@Sharyn -- perfect, as always

October 3, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterMaureen

I agree with Holly Folly, that little guy needs cuddles asap.

October 3, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterhppire

I don't know what you're talking about. The first one is a perfectly accurate representation of the Premier League. (Search for "diving in football" if you don't now what I'm talking about.)

#1 "Soccer in the Pond" was a clever promotional idea, but everyone pretty much knew what would happen. Also not sure that a prominently displayed warning label is the best way to sell cakes.

#3 I see what they were going for, but 'hairy' and food just don't go together.

October 3, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterCraig

I can't be the only one that is grateful that little miss scared-of-heights at least *looks* like a balloon.

@Sharyn ~ For some reason now I want spaghetti and meatballs. o.O

I want a plushy Harold for my desk!

Anybody know the Etsy page where somebody was selling the snowman thing she made for Jen? Or how I can contact her? I've decided I need one for Christmas. Or my birthday.

October 3, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJodee

They're huddling. No, really. The voices say so. And the voices are never wrong. Well, except for that one time...

"WARNING! CHOKING HAZARD" is ONLY to cover the store's virtual butt. We've likely all heard some stupid story (sometimes referred to as a "testimonial") about someone suing for some lame thing. A recent case-in-point: "I got a dumbillion bucks because I slipped on broken eggs I just picked up for myself and then dropped! The floor was RIGHT there! No one warned me that the floor was THAT hard! OR that you are not supposed to turn an open carton of eggs upside-down! (I just wanted to make sure the other ends of them were okay). I was SO traumatized and worried about falling that I ALMOST fell for real! Thank goodness for Sue Widme & Yule Wynn for getting me my money!" -A.Nidyit) =^-.-^=

I believe I took a photo of Harold's long-lost brother Harry at a fireworks show this summer. Tell me if you can see the resemblance:!i=2617259337&k=68kqv3L&lb=1&s=A

Brilliant, Jen! (Again.)

At least the first cake is on sale. The Hairy Thing is adorable. I'd take Harold home.

October 3, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterBarbara

Is the choking hazard warning on the first cake for before you look at the cake or after or for the poor plastic soccer players with their faces stuck in the...uummmm...mud/field/icing? cough cough, hack hack ;)

October 3, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterCharis

"WARNING! CHOKING HAZARD" is ONLY to cover the store's virtual butt. We've probably all seen one (at least) of those commercials/ "testimoniasl" touting some attorney's prowess "in the ring". You know how they go! "Oh, I got a dumbillion bucks because I slipped on broken eggs that I had picked up for myself. They fell right out of my hands, and that stinkin' floor was RIGHT there, and broke 'em! I was devastated, and traumatized, and SO worried about falling that I ALMOST fell for real! Thank goodness for Sue Widme & Wynn, for getting me the money I deserved!"

October 3, 2013 | Unregistered Commentersendingtheclowns

Wow, so there's apparently four different teams on the field in that first one, and NONE of them has control of the ball.

October 3, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJodi

Well, Harold was at least happy that he got not recognized as a muppaphone member because anything was better than to draw the attention of Marvin Suggs again.

October 3, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterHartmut

I seriously love the far side humor! You make my day every day :)

October 4, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterCarrie

Hair thing!
And a downed soccer ring.
You make scared balloons...

(With apologies to The Troggs)

Harold -- or should it be "Hairold?" -- is too cute. I want to hug him and pet him and call him George.

October 4, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterZippy

I find Harold kind of cute so I wouldn't want to eat him. Lol he looks more like a prickly thing than a hairy thing though. I think the price of that first cake was reduced due to the deaths of the plastic toys on it. That frosting would do it to ya lol.

October 4, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterArlene

Actually there are only two teams depicted on cake #1. Two field players and two goalkeepers. They wear long-sleeved shirts in different color than the field players. However, it is rather peculiar that both teams' field players wear shirts of the same color... And I think they fell on top of each other due to the sudden massive shrinkage of the soccer field. Or they ate from one side of the mushroom...

October 4, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterEnione

The last cake is kinda cute. For $8.99 I would buy it just to see what the frosting tastes like.

October 4, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterHeidi

the soccer field made me LOL. Sitting alone in a restaurant. with my mouth full.

October 4, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterAlex

I kind of love Harold

October 4, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterNiki M

Awwww, hairy thing! :D And @Sharyn, Malto Bene!

October 4, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterStoich91

Your comment about the Hairy Thing cake was too funny. Thanks for the laugh.

October 4, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterKatrina

Good one.

October 4, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterLaura Saxon

The first one is ridiculously expensive because it's an Australian supermarket. The players fell over in shock when they saw the $24.95 sticker.

October 5, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterKelly

The sign on the last one says HAIRY THING. Makes me think of the bakers NOT wearing their hair nets. XD

October 5, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterliv

I kinda like the balloons one; who knew if a balloon was afraid of heights?! She'd have to make that face! :o
And I agree with everyone, Harry is kinda cute. A little frosting-y, but cute.

The Far Side wrecks are pretty much the best thing ever.

The balloons one reminds me of this scene from Adventure Time:
