What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

What Do You Mean, "Last Minute"?

"We pride ourselves on having every detail planned out - nope, nothing unexpected happened here!" [whistling]

And you're right, Nicole P.: it IS a little dotty.

Hmm, looks like the shower was planned too close to the due date! :P At least they were able to recycle the cake!

January 17, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Is there a story that goes along with it? Like, was Megan having a baby shower, but the baby (Ashlie) came early?

January 17, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterErica

lol - a good friend of mine had the same thing happen - she had to go in for an amergency C section about 2 days before her shower! Not many babies get to attend their own baby shower, but Emily did!

January 17, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMomofthePolka-DotPony

It would have been a cute cake if the baby hadn't arrived early!

January 17, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterKate

it's actually kind of a cute cake, aside from the white edging and the obvious lazy cover-up. would it have been terribly hard to grab a spoon and flick off the bottom row of green dots, smooth over the chocolate, and THEN proceed with your bienvenidos? if you're going to be slack, at least have the decency to cover it up.

Is it a riddle that I'm too dumb to get? Is Megan the mom and Ashlie the baby?

You'd think they'd at least use the same color icing...

January 17, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterJen H

You know, if they'd just left it at "Congratulations Megan", it'd be a half decent cake. But no. Had to add on.

January 17, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMadWoman

All Adither:
They had a baby shower for Megan planned, but then the baby, Ashley, came early. Instead of getting a whole new cake, they sent this one back (or maybe one of her friends did it) to have Welcome Ashley written along the bottom.

January 17, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterWrath

Is there a back story? It looks to me like the cake was congratulating the mom-to-be, and welcoming the new baby who although unborn is already named. (I hate it when people do that. How do you know she has an "Ashlie" personality? Not to mention "Ashleigh" or "Ashley" is misspelled. Whatever.)

Anyway, what I mean is, was this really a wreck, or just a cake with too much writing in too small a space? Because it's still pretty and tasteful, I think; it just has some room for improvement.

January 17, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterFreedomFirst

at least there were no horrible images used of ashlie's entrance into this world. (real or made of cake)

January 17, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterDiana

Megan is the mom hence the congratulations text, and Ashlee is the baby since it says welcome to her.

Too darn cute!!!!! We planned my baby shower when I was 6 months along...just in case :P No worries however, my son arrived 2 weeks past his due date hehe.

January 17, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Baby was early, bakery notified of change, but someone decided to write Ashlie in blue, instead of green, totally wrecking a good cake....SIGH
~Amy B.

January 17, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAmy

Actually, the blue "Welcome Ashlie" writing matches the blue border and the blue bows on the shoes. All they needed to do to make it passable was scoop off the green dots at the bottom before more writing was added. Oh, well. Welcome, Ashlie!

January 17, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterKore

I don't think it's that wrecky. They couldn't write Welcome Ashlie in green; you'd never separate it from the green dots! Maybe they wanted the cake to be updated. That's not the bakery's fault.

I think it's a cute cake, even with the obvious last minute addition.

January 17, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterLori

I wouldn't say the blue text would be the wreck in this case - however, leaving the green dots behind the text would be. :/

January 17, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAshura

looks like the cake's a little sick with all those dots.

and i agree...pick off the little green dots along the bottom before writing on top. it just looks VERY strange...

WVOTD: cookin
wow, i never would have imagined this one. 'when ashlie was born early, megan's best friends got cookin' and made sure ashlie was greeted on her own baby shower cake.'

January 17, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterLindsay

Hahaha! I'm seeing spots!

It's kinda cute all the same and if it was because baby came early I'm sure everyone got a laugh from it.

January 17, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterCyberrblue (Colleen)

The real wreck here is getting cutesy with the spelling, not to mention there are - what - 10,000,000,000,000 Ashleys roaming the face of the Earth???

January 17, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterTeacher of the Year

Mmmm peas and chocolate icing. Frozen peas would be more suited to a Happy Vasectomy cake.

Darn babies, can't you tape a copy of their schedule to your tummy so they know when it's time to arrive.

wvotd gazes..(really, a real word this time). Everyone avoided each others gazes as they all thought the same thing, "Are those frozen peas on the cake?"

January 17, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterHyena Overlord

Now the welcoming message looks like an afterthought .

January 17, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMella

baby came early!!!

January 17, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterSarah+2girls

You can buy cupcakes for pretty cheap.

January 17, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterHall Monitor

i didn't know what was supposed to be funny about this. fortunately, from the comments, i can tell i'm not alone.

January 17, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Yeah, I'm going to have to go with "not an actual wreck" on this one. I think it's a pretty cute cake.

January 17, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterKaren

Looks a bit like they scattered peas around the edge. :) Really cute cake, though, even with the surprise baby writing.

January 17, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterCrazy Raven Productions

The first time I saw the cake, I looked over it quickly and didn't realize that Megan was the mother, so I figured that they didn't expect a second baby but ended up having one anyways (okay, I was probably tired or sounds rather implausible now, because women have all sorts of checkups, but hey, there's a rare chance it could happen, right?).

January 17, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterNatalie

I love it! I think it tells a great story about nature doing what it does best--surprises! I love the little booties.

January 17, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterBecky B

This is similar to what my shower cake looked like because the shower was purposely planned for a month after the baby's arrival. Not that it excuses the spacing, but it's not that uncommon to have a cake say congrats to the mom and welcome to the baby.

January 17, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Why on earth wouldn't they pick off the green dots? That's one of the weirdest cake mishaps I've seen - it doesn't take ANY skill to pick things up. Okay, maybe an opposable thumb.

My youngest was born 10 weeks early and we had the shower while she was in the NICU. I got a CCC.

January 17, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterHeidi

This is one of the better wrecks, I'd say.
At least the lettering is good and they spelled "congratulations" right...

January 17, 2009 | Unregistered Commentersupersonic-gabi

My 4 year old just saw the picture and said "Look mom, a cake with peas and shoes on it."

January 17, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Man, they should have just left it, it's such a cute cake otherwise!

January 17, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterHannah

I had baby showers with all three of my children. Two of them attended their own showers - one because he came five weeks early, and one because it was planned that she'd be few weeks old so that people could meet her and spend time with her.

January 17, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterdgmommie

Wrath and Anonymous at 10:30,
If you are right about the baby, then why do both of you spell the baby's name differently than the Wreckerator did?

January 17, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterheartafire

I'm guessing there's some kind of temper tantrum story. "omigod, Megan is gonna be sooooo pissed. She totally said she wanted the name of the baby on the cake. I can't believe you seriously went to the bakery and told them to put 'congratulations Megan' without saying anything about the baby! You gotta fix that NOW or this whole baby shower is a f***ed up pile of baby doo-doo."

January 18, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterHeather

heartonfire, I don't think Wrath and Anonymous are presuming to know for sure what happened or to know Megan and Ashlie personally, they're just telling what they think happened, though I understand why their wording could be interpreted differently.

(No offense meant to anybody; both sides have valid reasons to write or interpret how they did)

word verification: ingonst=ensconced in goo, like "Welcome Ashlie" is on the cake (the green dots=the goo).

January 18, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterNatalie

Overall, though, it is a pretty good cake... no clashing colors... no random toppers... no airbrushing...

January 18, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

I don't know. With some of the stuff I've seen on here maybe it's SUPPOSED to look like that.

January 19, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterSport's Mom

That's funny! Actually, I had my shower (for twins) at 30w0d and delivered at 31w0d, so this was close to being me!

January 19, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Better than the version I got for my high school Child Development class for our end of semester mock baby shower. They forgot to write anything on it at all.

January 20, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMichele

as none of my close friends have had children ( or baby showers), my immediate reaction was that they unexpectedly ended up with twins. that happened to my friend. her older sisters were in identical positions and their hearts beat at the same time, so the doctor mistakenly thought it was just one baby.

January 25, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAri

Ashlie got second billing on this one...really?

January 29, 2009 | Unregistered Commentersolvency ii

Has anyone noticed that the cake is in the wrong colors for a girl? Was it a surprise gender baby as well as an early one? I didn't get a cake for my baby's shower (she attended, it was intentionally late since we wanted to be surprised about her gender). We had strawberry shortcake instead. Yum!

lovely wedding cake!

November 8, 2010 | Unregistered

Um, pretty sure it's meant as a graduation congratulations, and Megan had a baby at the same time. Or i have just been watching too much Teen Mom?
