What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Sunday Sweets Visits the 80s

Sunday Sweets is my weekly NON-Wrecks feature, the better to show how wrecky the Wrecks really are.

I grew up in the 80s, so I have a bit of a soft spot for the music, the movies, and the retina-searing color combinations of that decade. I also make funny squealing noises when I see references to nearly-forgotten loves like the Wuzzles or that Hugga Bunch made-for-TV movie. (Hey, even geek girls were girly girls at age 6, right?)

All that to say, here are some fun 80s-inspired Sweets for y'all.

Remember these guys?

Sing it with me, Carrie G.: "Gummi Beeeaars! Bouncing here and there and EV'rywhere..."

This next one combines 3 great 80s icons: the Rubik's cube, Super Mario, and the oh-so-popular Garbage Pail Kids. (I had a whole album of those cards growing up. I'm guessing a little after the Hugga Bunch phase.)

Marylse found this on Jessica Claire's photography site (which you should check out to see pics of the raddest 80's prom-themed shower ever) and it was made by Sweet Gems Custom Cakes.

And I know Wheel of Fortune is still on the air, but since I had a Vanna White t-shirt in 4th grade it will always be 80s to me.

Sara D., would you like to buy a vowel?
(Note: sorry, I've once again lost track of the original e-mail link, so if you know who made this, please let me know so I can credit the baker!)

And lastly, Karen C. found a cake that really takes me back...

Love it love it love it. And I still have a crush on Michael J. Fox. [wistful sigh]

Ok, this was just too much fun to stop the 80s theme now. That's right, you heard me: the e-mail lines are NOW open, folks, so go forth and find me 80s Sweets! I'm talking the cartoons (Snorks, anyone?) the games, the toys (Slinky, My Little Pony, Cabbage Patch - you get the idea), the movies (GhostBUSTERS!), and yes even the music (I know there's a Thriller cake out there somewhere). Send your finds to Sunday Sweets [at] Cake Wrecks [dot] com.

And if you find all these blasts from the past just as fun as I do, you should check out the sticker section on Branded in the 80s. Anyone else remember Poochie the dog? Anyone?

Gummi Bears!! That was the best cartoon EVER! I can't believe I've forgotten them until now.

Though, I was just a wee little thing in the 80's... I missed half the decade.

Sweet cakes, Jen!

The Gummi Bears one is my fav. I mean, they're all pretty much rad, but...I dunno, I've got a soft spot in my heart for those bouncing bears...

February 22, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterDangGina

Jen, I totally remember Poochie! I had a Poochie stamp ... -loved- her!

February 22, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterHolly

I loved Poochie the dog. One of my most vivid childhood memories was getting in trouble for putting Poochie stickers on the fridge. I still claim it was an improvement.

February 22, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterJulie

I was a kid in the 80's, too. And I loved Gummi Bears, but couldn't remember their name until I scrolled to the beginning of the song. As soon as I read the first line, I could sing the whole theme song! I'm sure I'll really annoy my children today :)
Beautiful cakes, of course!

February 22, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterLeslie

I used to bring mine to school. ALong with my tape player to play music.

February 22, 2009 | Unregistered Commenteranisaerah

Oh my goodness, I am so glad that there is someone else out there that remembers the hugga bunch kids! Anytime I ask someone about them they look at me as if I were insane. Also, I totally want that gummi bears cake for my 30th birthday!

I was singing the gummi bears song the instant I saw those little guys. I think that most be the most earworm of a theme song ever.

Here's a yoda cupcake cake:

Oh my god!! Thank you for the awesome trip down memory lane. It may be the thing that gets me through this last bit of winter. I'm now tempted to write a post about the 80's and if I do, I'll link to your blog. You do some mighty awesome work here!

Born in 1981
I only know the German Gummi Bear theme song and now I'm going to look for it on YT

February 22, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMella

Funny, I just passed a DeLorean while driving my daughter to work this morning. I was missing the Back to the Future extras, though.

February 22, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterOutbackJon

I remember Poochie.

Also, the Hugga Bunch movie scared me half to death.

February 22, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterNessa

LOL! Wow - that really took me back! Now I have the Gummi Bears theme song in my head.

Who remembers: Jem and the Holograms (vs. the Misfits of course!), Rainbow Bright, or Popples?

February 22, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMrs. Comet Hunter

"Sing it with me, Carrie G.: "Gummi Beeeaars! Bouncing here and there and EV'rywhere...""

... was singin' it in my head the moment i saw the picture, before i even got to your text!

February 22, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterlinz

i named my dog Poochie! she was a very sweet doberman. :P

February 22, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterliliana

Ah Love it!! Gummi bears were awesome. And I still know the song.

February 22, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterErin

Even though Michael J Fox is the same age as my mom (augh! I am so young!) ... *I* have a crush on him and was born on his birthday.

February 22, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterKamity

Awww - I was so sure we were the same age! But now I see you are a mere youngster. I was too old to collect Garbage Pail Kids cards, and I don't recognize the Gummi Bear things. I was too busy listening to Quiet Riot to pay attention to such kitschy-ness :) But the Rubik's cube - now that rocks.

February 22, 2009 | Unregistered

And also, you know what would be *really* totally awesome? A Kroft Super Stars themed cake. H.R. Puff'n'Stuff anyone? The Bugaloos? Fun!

February 22, 2009 | Unregistered

OMG yes Poochie. I never had one, but my friend did. But, because of her we still call pig tails "poo-chie chies" after her rad pink ears.

February 22, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterSandi

Ohhhhh my gawd! I simply must have the DeLorean cake. I watch the Back to the Future movies all the time - my 5 yr old is hooked on them now too.

February 22, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterJessica

I STILL have my little stuffed Poochie puppy! She's kind of old and my 8 year old daughter plays with her now. It cracks me up that My Little Ponies, Cabbage Patch Kids and Rainbow Brite are all becoming popular again. They were HUGE 20 years ago when I was my daughter's age.

February 22, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterJenni

@Mrs.Comet--omg! There should totally be a Rainbow Brite cake!!

These are so awesome. Makes me feel like a kid again. *love* the DeLorean. "Great Scott!!"

February 22, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterBuffy

I am so in love with these cakes! And I absolutely love the link to the 80's Prom Baby Shower!!! WOW! Fantastic!

February 22, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterErin
