What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Something's Afoot

Sadly, the Sesame Street Paving Company never found the rest of Elmo:

Thanks to Timberly M., who knows the baker was trying for a carrot. I'd say they nailed it.

What ARE those brown things???

This will give me nightmares of a three horned slug slithering out of the shadows......*shudder*

August 25, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMichelle

I'd be sad, except it's Elmo. Elmo used to be cute. Then he TOOK OVER Sesame Street. This might be the right idea.

The toenails are frightening me. I don't think I want to know what they are.

August 25, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMimiheart

What are those brown larval things????

August 25, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterCarol

It looks like three slugs coming out of I don't know what...

August 25, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMary

What in the name of all that is holy is that supposed to be??!!! I'm honestly drawing a blank right now.

August 25, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJess

Elmo needs a pedicure!

August 25, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterkwege

I second the ^EWWW !!! I can only see disgusting, old, brown, horn-like toenails! I would never eat that!!!

August 25, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAJ

.... No, no, no, now, breathe slowly, in through the nose, that's right....
*hurk* Nope, not gonna make it!
.... You can do it, just breathe. Okay, now, what is it about the photo that is making you feel like this?
*sniffs loudly, wipes nose* Honestly? Alright, how about the fact that those three WHATEVER they are look like maggot heads poking out of a 5-day-old piece of Grade F chuck, THAT'S what?

I think they are pickles. Or maybe gummy slugs.

"Strange things are afoot at the Circle K"---quick, name that movie!
The top the 'carrot' looks very much like tiny, sweet pickles.

August 25, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterCeeCee

Eww, of all the things that 'carrot' could be, Elmo's remains are the least disgusting.

August 25, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterGretchen

Wow. If that's what the carrots in your garden look like then you either need to buy the more expensive soil next time (go on, it's worth it!) or stop weeding with your work clothes still on. You know, from the reactor you work at.

Reminds me of that line from Oliver Twist -- "Please, sir, I want some Mo."

August 25, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterSharyn

@Ceecee, Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure. :-)

August 25, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJami

Carrots shouldn't bleed, even when nailed.

August 25, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterKimberly Chapman

My mother used to have one of those fox-fur stoles that was actually the entire fox, head and paws included. (Don't send PETA after me - she'd already had it for decades by the time I was old enough to realize what it was.) This wreck bears a strong resemblance to one of the paws on that thing!

August 25, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJules

I have seen a commercial for a medicine that Elmo can use. I don't remember the name, but it had little critters making themselves comfy under a man's toenails, Elmo looks like he has such friends...ew.

Your welcome for the visual of toe fungus friends. :)

"Crikey! Look at this beauty! This is the rare 3 horned blood slug! Isn't she gorgeous? RIght then! She looks mighty happy slithering along on that cake so we'll just leave her be then"

Can't bring myself to find that appetizing...nope, no sir, I didn't like it

I have been having an awful day and this post has cheered me up and grossed me in equal measures, thank you.

Who knew that raw meatloaf jalapenos could sprout when placed on a ghostly white disc?

August 25, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterDB

This reminds me more of Gossamer's arm than Elmo's. :-D

You know... the red haired monster from Looney Tunes that chased after Bugs Bunny in a couple episodes? The one Bugs gave a mousetrap manicure?

I also noticed that no naked mohawk baby wants to ride that carrot either...

August 25, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterLoo-E Loo-I

Whoa! Looks like Elmo got crossways with the mob.

... And the butler didn't do it. (How could the butler do it?)

August 25, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMetzgirl

Now that is a tragedy.

August 25, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMay

Looks like the foot of a Gruffalo!

August 25, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterHeather

I figured out what the 'carrot' is missing! A mohawk baby! If it had a mohawk baby it would be far more easily identifiable as a carrot... with toenail fungus.

How To Make a Radish Cake

1. Take your favorite carrot cake recipe.
2. Substitute radishes for carrots.
3. Garnish with salmon puree and pickled garlic.

Serve in a take-away salad container with flat 7-Up and a side of crackers.

Maybe it's the angle of the picture, but... what the heck kind of bakery item is that round white disc supposed to be? It looks too low in the box to be a cupcake, too weird to be a cookie, too small to be a cake... Is it just a slab of a buttercream frosting disc with Elmo's fungal foot on it? I mean, I love icing as much as the next person, but are we down to leaving out the baked part entirely?

Are those sweet gherkin toes?

Oh, sweet mercy, I may be ill. While I love a good gherkin, they should never adulterate a cake.

This is, of course, a tribute to the spectacular failure of the Accidental Trading Company, an over-seas exporting business that tried to latch on to the “lucky rabbit’s foot” keychain craze. At the first production meeting there was a colossal misunderstanding when the boss, with a burst of unrestrained enthusiasm, held up a rabbit’s foot and said. “I want you to nail this!” The staff, unfortunately all unemployed literalists, carefully followed his dictum. (Later, in a moment of mental hostility when the workers were all unemployed again, that became the boss’s nickname….) The results, to be kind, were disastrous and, alas, the company went out of business. On a side note, this experience with the boss’s dictum is where the expression “got the shaft” came from.

@ Andrea K

I was curious after your post and decided to investigate further....I shouldn't have! While enlarging the picture to see that I think it is indeed a cookie, though not a large cookie, it unfortunatly also enlarged those...toe-like...things...and that was frightening. Trust me when I say they do NOT look better life size and I still can't tell if they are nuts or chrysalises. Gross!

August 25, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterBecky

A carrot? Really??? I thought is was a hot chili pepper!!

My husband would cheerfully eat this cake, thinking of Elmo's demise. Even my toddler has been known to complain about not liking Elmo.

August 25, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterStephanie

Am I right in thinking the toenails are made of green beans??

August 25, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterClaire

This cake cracks me up! And it's perfect for what just happened to me. I recently checked out the cakes at the State Fair that were competing and the only one decorated (not just competing for taste) was white with a giant carrot iced on it (funny enough as it is!). I was with my uncle who I had to explain to why I was laughing.
I just asked him what kind of cake he wants for his birthday and what he wants on it. He said just a carrot cake. I told him I really wanted to decorate it. And he said yeah, with carrots. !!
You have yourself a deal sir!!!
Expect a wrecreation/actual wreck-since-it's-my-first-cake picture soon!!!

August 25, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterGingerfish

LOL DNAMom...My stars...those lines were exactly what were going through my mind! Also the "Evil Scientist"..."Boo!" neon sign. :-D

August 25, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterLoo-E Loo-I

Claire! That's exactly my first thought! The sprouty things look like green beans!

August 25, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterStacey

Such snobbery! Like you don't all use canned green beans to decorate your cakes.

August 25, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterKrista
