What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Do You Hear What I Hear?

We all mishear things from time to time. Heck, I still think Elton John just wanted a hug from Tony Danza. However, there are certain levels to auditory misunderstanding, which thanks to today's bakers I can now illustrate and then make snarky comments about. WOOHOO!

Level 1: The Simple Mistake

This is the one anyone can make, since at first blush the bungled interpretation almost makes sense:

Poor Chad. He went from rad to sunburned.

Level Two: The "HUH?"

This is a more convoluted level, and one that requires an explanation to understand. For example, this cake was supposed to read, "Happy 24th Birthday, Ashleigh. YOU ARE OLD!"

"Yes, I'm afraid you DO need to spell it out for me."

(This reminds me of the time in grade school when I had to interview my grandmother about her travels. She kept referring to Mexico as "Old Mexico" [presumably because she lived in New Mexico], but it sounded like she was saying "Oh Mexico." So that's what I wrote - about a billion times in that report. My family all found it quite funny. I did not.)

Level Three: The One You're Never Going To Believe

This is the level of misunderstanding that takes you so far down the wrong road that there's simply no turning back. So, little Seth, you just enjoy your "blue camo" baby shower cake, mkay?

"Watch out, they spit!"

Thanks to Lelia R., Joann R., & Yvonne D. for the "just deserts."

Blue camo on a baby shower cake? *Camo* on a baby shower cake?! I have to question the thought processes of everyone involved in that one.

January 10, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterElissa

I think we should applaud the baker on the last wreck. Even though it is not camo, you can definitely tell they are blue "camels". They should get some points for artistic ability.

Stupid Question here: could someone (just one!), please explain the Elton John hugging Tony Danza reference? I don't get it. That is a mental image I don't need this morning.

January 10, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSVF

At least you can tell that they are camels. And the palm trees were a nice touch that the decorator probably came up with on their own. Trying to go the extra mile for the customer, you know!

Sung to “Ding, Dong, The Wicked Witch is Dead”

It’s wrong that Chad is red
Poor red Chad, he feels so bad
It’s wrong that dear rad Chad is red.

Shaking her achy head
Poor Ashleigh is “O” they said
Oh well, she could be old instead!

Seth’s Mom said “Blue camo”
Camo, camo, camo
Oh no, those camels show that she should have spelled it out

Now it makes us laugh, you know, thanks to Jen, who tells us, so
We all know
What those cakes should have said!

As commenter, I must aver
That baker is a bad scriber
She has so few brains in her head
And those she has are mostly dead.

Blue camo! love it.

this reminds me of a friend's FB status update from the other day.....

because of a commercial, he found out what happened to the dinosaurs.
They had "a reptile dysfunction."

January 10, 2013 | Unregistered Commenteranonymous

Seth should be relieved. Blue camels are far less tacky than blue camo. In fact, any camels are less tacky than any camo.

January 10, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSuBee

#2 looks like someone vomited Skittles. (I'm home sick today- guess what I did earlier, I dare you [but I don't eat Skittles])

blue camo to blue camels is actually very, very funny. I laughed quite a bit.

Jen, my mother was doing transcription for an insurance claim on an "Errors and Omissions" policy a few months after returning to FL from a year spent in CA. She actually typed "Arizona missions" and didn't catch it; fortunately, her boss actually read the letter before it was sent.

I think the blue camels are secretly a win. Because oh the potential wreck that blue camo would have been, based on all the gree camo we have seen.

Old Mexico. hahahaha

@SVF The song Tiny Dancer has the chorus "Hold me closer Tiny Dancer." When not enunciated well, it sounds disturbingly close to "Hold me closer Tony Danza."

Careful, Maria! Theardare is listening! ;-)

@Barbara Anne - Thank you for the link! That clears it all up. I will *definitely* be the ninja trainer. Think I'll go update the gym now & add a rappelling wall to the outside. Will you be in charge of the icing instruction or is that Craig's department? I think Haiku Joy should teach the spelling, grammar & punctuation class(es) for our ninjas. (If we're gonna do this, let's get it right, people!)

PS And thank you for that heartfelt apology the other day! Much appreciated! <Smile>

@SVF-I'm sure I'm not the first to reply, but I believe Jen is referring to the Elton John song that goes:
Hold me closer Tony Danza.
Count the head lice on the highway.

January 10, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSuBee

What on earth O_o although I agree the blue camels WERE nicely done. Maybe one parent was in the Navy?? They have blue caom uniforms. Haikujoy and Sharyn XD XD

I see that Chad has also become Chaa.

Tom Lehrer had a song about "Old Mexico". Hooray for "National Gall Bladder Week"!

I think that blue camels are much more plausible than blue camo; I probably would have made the same so-called mistake.

@KarateLady ~ That comment was directed to your comment about Andrea's diodes. I have no clue what you actually look like but I was picturing this teeny woman getting all up in Craig's business making sure he didn't actually damage Andrea's person. Because, you know, in my head Craig is almost 7 feet tall, built like a wrestler and has a science lab in his basement like Dexter's Laboratory. But in the scene in my head that didn't matter because you are THE KarateLady and you kick a$$ and take names! :)

Perhaps the fever has destroyed more brain cells then I thought...

Let's put 60 seconds on the clock and see how many blue things we can put on a cake that are worse than blue camels. Ready? Go!

January 10, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterjack wire

I quite like the camels, I prefer them to camo tbh

January 10, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterLittlefox

I saw the Stone Temple Pilots with friends and they were all singing along. My friend said I should join in and I said I don't know the lyrics. She thought I did (doesn't everyone?). I sang, "Put another candle on my birthday cake, yeah!". She looked at me funny and I said, "See, I told you!" You know, I don't even know what the actual lyrics are, but I don't have the inclination to find out, either, so if any big STP fans out there would care to share...

Anyway, about the cakes.

#1: 'Chaa is red': I could not figure that one out until I read the caption below. Ohhh, they pulled the old Misspell 'Rad' to Hide the Fact That We Spelled 'Chad' Wrong routine.

#2: I don't have much to say about that one. Every time I look at it, my eyes begin to ache. Perhaps that's why the baker abbreviated the last three words? They could not look at the cake any longer for fear of it inducing a seizure?

#3: I must admit, it took me a minute(or three) to realize "blue camo" was NOT supposed to be blue camels. Better, stronger, faster, but not smarter. : - /

@Barbara Anne: Aww. Feel better soon. I think that Skittles cake is made of Pepto Bismol, so I saved you a slice. I'll send it right over! If nothing else, it will help you purge all the yucky stuff.

@Sharyn: Luckily for us, laryngitis does not affect your mad wrecky skillz, yo. Well done, as always!

@SuBee: Hee! I've heard the Tony Danza part before, but not sure I've ever heard about the head lice on the highway!

@mindy1: I was thinking the same: a military family welcoming a baby boy with blue camo cake would not be so bad....would it?

Why, hel-lo, Theardare! You're tail is twitching something aweful! Here, let me give your ear a nice scratch.....thaaaaat's better. Now, go meditate in the atrium for a while. Ah, ah, aaahh. No guns in the atrium. Hand it over.....atta boy. Off you go! (Theardare's meditation consists of standing amidst the figurines, sketches, portraits, statues and plushies of himself in the atrium and yelling, "I'm king of the world!")

January 10, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterAndrea

while i too find "camo" an odd choice for a baby shower cake and respect the quality of the execution of the camels, i can't help but notice that the camel on the left looks a wholelotta like the came of the eponymous cigarette brand.

Are you sure that Chaa being "red" is not referring to his political views?

January 10, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterkit

I can see the comment board spinning off a social network. 'CakeBook'...hmm...

@Barbara Anne and @Sharyn, I hope you feel better soon.

@Maria has been warned, check.

Icing instruction as time permits. I should note in passing that the door that @Andrea negotiated still serves as the main entrance.

@Jodee in WA -- LOL.

@Andrea, when did STP do a cover of Sheriff John's Birthday Polka? That that question would even need to be framed is a level of bizarre that fits right in with these cakes. (Link!)

#1 I expect Chaa was red when he saw that cookie. The person who bought it probably was, too, for a different reason.

#2 Perhaps the wreckerator thought 'URO' was some sort of in-reference / abbreviated superlative for Ashbigh.

#3 There are also camels on the sides. Not sure what camels have to do with a baby shower, but that goes double for 'blue camo'. And how does one pronounce 'Scth'?

January 10, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterCraig

@jack wire: How about a blue newborn baby?

January 10, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterAndrea

Because inquiring minds (Craig) want to know: apparently, in the song Dead and Bloated by STP the line is, "I am smelling like the rose that somebody gave me on my birthday deathbed" and does NOT refer to any sort of request for more candles on a birthday cake whatsoever. My bad. I may be mis-remembering what I sang, but it definitely involved "...birthday cake, yeah!" at the end there.

I'd insert a fancy link, but I have no idea how to do that. Go to if you really need to see/hear the lyrics for yourself.

January 10, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterAndrea

As a partially deaf person I find these cakes particularly HILARIOUS!

I learned early on to spell things out, literally.

And I frequently tell people if they say something to me and my response makes them think I'm nuts, probably what they said and what I heard are totally different things.

January 10, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterValerie

I love the little camels- at least you could actually tell what they were. I'm kinda afraid to see what some of the other baker's camels would look like. Also- ALADDIN reference FTW!!
