What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

- Jen

If you're a geek like me, then you know all the lucky/crazy people are at San Diego Comic-Con this weekend. (Lucky because, c'mon, it's Comic-Con. And crazy because IT'S COMIC-CON.)

So whether you're packed in like a cape-wearing sardine at the event itself, or just watching the coverage online like me with a mixture of jealousy and amazement that people are seriously paying $50 a day just to park, this is for you:

Highlights from Batman & Spider-Man's Day At San Diego Comic Con:

1) The Road Trip:

"I believe that clerk gave us the economy 'mobile."

"Yeah, yeah. Hey, do we have to listen to your theme song the ENTIRE way? The nanananananas are giving me a headache."

2) The Restraining Order:

"Hey, it's not my fault those fans didn't appreciate my southern web-slinger. That takes real talent, you know!"

"Don't talk to me."

3) The "Comic Book Crafts" Panel They Waited 4 Hours In Line For:

"I still say it's not fair you used the Bat-Icer on yours."

"You're just jealous of my utility belt, Spandex-Man."

"That's IT. I'm telling Alfred."

 4) The "Hunky Heroes" Photo Shoot with Iron Man:

(Which Spider-Man's web-slinging ways gets them kicked out of. Again.)

"I think you have a problem."

"Oh, lighten up. At least Tony thought it was cool."

5) The Unexpected Early Departure:

"Wow. That Tannen fellow sure was spunky! Did you SEE his right hook? Although I could have done without the puns. Who says, 'now make like a tree, and get out of here,' anyway?"

"Just shut up and drive."

Thanks to Amy, Sara G., Mike L., Jennifer W., & Julia K. for bucking common conventions.

That Batman is a naughty boy!

July 19, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterDonna

Jeez, guys. Get a room.

July 19, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterDanny

OMG! These are hilarious!! And am I the only one here that sees Iron Man doing his best Señor Wences impersonation? S'awright!!

July 19, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJen @ Cup a Dee Cakes

Naked hero cake-must know backstory NOW!!!!

July 19, 2013 | Unregistered Commentermindy1

After the assorted webshooter innuendoes, are we sure that "spunky" is the adjective we want to use?

Also, shouldn't hunky!ironman have a hole gouged in his icing/chest?

July 19, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterkhereva

I am soooo out of the superhero link. To me it looked like the first cake was a hot water bottle--and it made as much sense as any of the rest of it.

July 19, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterdrgns4vr

OMG, coffee came flying from my mouth when I saw the hunky super heros.

July 19, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterKristin

You've heard about the old woman who lived in a shoe? Well that's nothing, compared to the fact that Spiderman and Batman live in a red Croc. I don't want to know if they have so many children that they don't know what to do.

July 19, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterCheryl

These superheroes
Do not inspire confidence
Too much 'webslinging'.

July 19, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJoan

Wait...the celebrator's name is Logan, and no Wolverine?

Just remembered that Logan could be a boy or girl. Hmmmm.

July 19, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSaraV

Best. Road trip. Ever. ;)

July 19, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterDebs

The most amusing thing about that naked-posing-heroes cake? It's for Logan. That's Wolverine's real name. So what kind of back story does that bring up?

July 19, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterEric Gjovaag

That first cake looks like the two are sharing Batman's racecar bed.

Superhero sleepover!!

July 19, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterLDM

"Happy birthday, Logan" and there's no Wolverine on the cake?? So WRONG!!

July 19, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterMisti

I read "Comic-Con" and instantly thought "Big Bang Theory" because the guys mention that frequently, and are "quite fond" of comics. A cake depicting those lovable geeks would be long as nobody put anything on "Sheldon's spot" on the cake.

July 19, 2013 | Unregistered Commentersendingtheclowns

Oh my word! I haven't laughed so much at Spider-man since I don't know when. It seems that this superhero business has gotten to his *ahem* head.

For half a second, I mistook Batman for Wolverine on the naked superhero cake (it's early here m'kay? and the fact that the cake was for Logan, didn't help! Plus his bat-cowl looks like Wolverine's hairdo, and he's looking all surly/grumpy like Wolverine does).

@ Jen @ Cup a Dee Cakes, you are quite correct, Iron Man is indeed missing his arc reactor. So, does that just make him Tony Stark in a funny mask?

July 19, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterEmily

I'm glad that I'm not the only one who wants to believe that the hunky super hero cake is for THE Logan, as in Wolverine. Please, please, be true!

July 19, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterBarbara

It's so nice not to be the only female geek out there, afterall. I almost spewed my coffee too on the "southern webslinger" comment! Love this blog!

July 19, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterShannon

I'm glad I had girls. And yes, I know Spiderman and Batman aren't just for boys...but my girls were more into Polly Pocket and My Little Pony. And for the record, Polly Pocket clothes and shoes rank right up there with LEGO on the pain level when you step on them.

July 19, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJodee

Are we ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN that first one isn't a two-person sleeping bag?

July 19, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterBADKarma

Hee, I cracked up severely at the term "Bat icer." Love the idea that Batman has piping tools in his utility belt! And, those Spidey cupcakes were AWFUL!!

July 19, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJodi

I never noticed Spidey was so.... Erotic. :)

My thoughts on the first cake were " Batman & Spiderman in a slipper!"

These comments have me LOLing in McDonalds again!! :P

July 19, 2013 | Unregistered Commenteranony mouse

Did we ever figure out which of yesterday's cakes were not served at weddings? And Spidey rocks!!

July 19, 2013 | Unregistered Commentergmarie

This is a road movie I would totally line up to see. Perfect, Jen!

July 19, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterlisadh

Everything's better
with ketchup, especially
the windshield wipers

And I love it when someone else also submits a haiku. Yay! Nice one, Joan.

July 19, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterHaiku Joy

Yeah, OK, I am getting a topless superhero cake for my next B-day.

July 19, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterReepicheep-chan

If Batman has piping tools in his belt, he must be a member of DOC. Cool -- that means the Commissioner can call on the Hot Line to report wrecks. But should our sky symbol be the bat, or a Carrot Jockey?

July 19, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterCraig

@Craig: definitely a carrot jockey.

July 19, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterPauline

That first picture, I swear, my first thought was "why are Batman and Spiderman in bed together?"

July 19, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterPan

@Craig ~ Carrot Jockey for sure! Or Theardare?

July 19, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJodee

I am glad I am not the only one who saw Batman&Spiderman in a slipper on the first cake! These cakes are just.....just........!

July 19, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterWildDuck

Carrot Jockey gets my vote.
Theardare is probably too sophisticatted to stoop to our level.

July 19, 2013 | Unregistered Commentersendingtheclowns

Okay, really?! A banner just popped up a the top of the page for "Cakes by T*****"-I'm not putting the whole name in.....but do you really want to advertise your cake businnes on a blog called and about "Cake Wrecks"?!!!!!

July 19, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterWildDuck

I just found out about Batman's secret baking hobby!

July 19, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterElphaba Thropp

That Old Spidey Cartoon Song.

Spiderman, Spiderman
Does whatever a spider can.
Spins a web, from his ****
Batman’s feelin’ tired and sick.
Look Out!
Here comes the Spiderman.

In the chill of the night,
Cuddled up, feeling glum.
Tucked in really tight,
Shares a bed with his chum.

Spiderman, Spiderman
Super buff, partially naked man.
He’s ignored.
Shooting web is his reward

Oh he- doesn’t know he’s offensive
Makes Batman hypertensive
Web shooting Spiderman…

Apologies to that guy who doesn't like all of the song parodies.

July 19, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSuBee

SuBee, you are completely brilliant!

July 19, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterAmy

I'm going to Comic Con on Sunday and I am so going to be looking for naked superheroes now!!!! LOL
And those people who pay to park are stupid...SD has the most awesome trolley system that drops off right in front of the convention center and it's only $5 round trip from Qualcomm (where the Chargers play) and you get free parking there!

July 19, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJenBen

@Craig: definitely a carrot jockey

@SuBee: brilliant

July 19, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSharyn

That southern web-slinger could get Spider Man a spot on America's got Talent! I nearly dropped my laptop on the floor. I didn't think it could get any better until...
Hunky Heroes cake! Or as I like to call them, Stripperheroes!
This cake opens up so many cans of worms that I don't even know where to start. First of all, erm, Spidey you really need to find yourself a private place. Superman used to like phone booths but whatever works for you and your Spidey fun time. Just not in public, m'kay? *shudders*
Second of all, why oh dear Lord, why is this "beefcake" superheroes cake for a boy? (granted, Logan could be a girls name but I'm not sure that makes it better. Unless it's a bachelorette cake)
Thirdly, what the he## were they thinking?!!!!! I may need more information because I think my head will explode. This is just so wrong on so many levels.

July 19, 2013 | Unregistered Commentersandy

@SuBee: (" Apologies to that guy who doesn't like all of the song parodies.")
Hey, the heck with that!! It's a free country, y'know. Besides, didn't you ever see that old, tearjerker movie "Cake Story"? Remember the famous line "Cake means never having to say you're sorry"?
There you go.

July 19, 2013 | Unregistered Commentersendingtheclowns

@Amy - I second that comment!

@SuBee - Awful nice of you to apologize in advance but unnecessary. If he don't like 'em, he don't have to read them. So there! :-)

July 19, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterKarateLady

I'm an old broad so I think the last cake is kinda nice. "Tune in next week. Same Bat time, same Bat channel!"

July 19, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterEllen

Awesome SuBee. That was awesome.

Craig, my vote is for Carrot Jockey.

Hunky Heroes photo shoot and Spiderman & Batman sleeping in a shoe... hmmm... I guess there are only 49 shades of grey left.

July 19, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterLindarella

Logan. So that must be the name of Comic Book Guy's cousin, Comic Book Gay who likes certain kinds of comic books.

July 19, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterpikkewyntjie

Theardare would probably want to be known as Catman, which might cause confusion, not to mention running the risk of copyright infringement.

July 19, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterCraig

Lmao @SuBee. I love your song parodies especially this one. Oh man I nearly got water all over my keyboard. Ahhh poor Batman.

July 20, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterArlene

I swear to Bowie, you guys really aren't missing a thing. All it is is one long, endless press conference and trade show, with 100,000 PEOPLE; there's very little Con to Con anymore. You wouldn't enjoy it nearly as much as Dragon*Con, I promise you. Frickin' NIGHTMARE, dude.

But hey, funny post! ;)

Your Pal,

July 20, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterStorm

Apologies in advance: I'm going to get obsessive-compulsively nerdy for just a sec. Then we can all get back to the revelry.

"Batman" is one word.
"Spider-Man" is hyphenated.
"Iron Man" is two words.
It's a legal trademark thing.

OK, end of Sheldon-channeling moment.

July 20, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterBob

@Storm: Ahhh...Bowie. Now you're talking.
@Craig: Whom, or what, would it be infringing upon? There's no monopoly/copyright on the words "cat" or "man" as far as I know! There should be a Catman; maybe Catwoman, "lonely"...?!

July 20, 2013 | Unregistered Commentersendingtheclowns

Hey, Storm~ which Bowie are you talking about? The knife? Or the David? Just wondering, because David Bowie is one of my all-time favorites. (Knives, I don't much care about one way or another. Or comics; I think the last one I looked at was a "Little Lulu"; it was carved with sharpened stones and dinosaur bones, on a cave wall.)
