Sunday Sweets Goes To A New Dimension!

One of my favorite things about cake art is how it can bridge the gap between 2D and 3D. I absolutely love it when bakers fool me, like this:

[By Moli Cakes in Slovakia]

Check it out: the rose stem is only painted on the bottom, but transitions to a real one on top! In fact, all the flowers here are 3D.

I can't get enough of this technique; adding in little sculpted touches like that gives a traditional cake so much more dimension! Look how this dress flows down the tiers, and how the bouquet stands out:

Or how about this steamy stunner:

[By Cakes By Julie]

I could swear that smoke is moving! And the flattened perspective on the train? AMAZEBALLS.

Even a thickened "paint" look can trick the eye:

Makes you want to reach out and touch it, right? Right before shoving your whole face in? :D

Here's a clever use of sugar cookies:

I love cookie decorations like this! It's almost like a layered paper cutting, or an edible scrapbook page.

Another example:

Check out that sword balancing on the edge. So good.

A big bunch of bubblegum balloons:

And check out how the sculpted pumpkins on this middle tier add to the illusion, so you just want to fall into that big blue sky:

Let's also stop to appreciate the fact that that is ALL BUTTERCREAM, gang. Whaaaaaat.

This beauty almost broke my brain:

How clever is that painting, so you feel like you're looking IN to the cake? And that sculpted finial is the perfect cherry on top.

And finally, for the best day ever, check out this sweet Rapunzel:

That braid is the stuff that cakey dreams are made of!

Hope you guys enjoyed! Happy Sunday!

P.S. Here's something else that bridges the gap from 2D to 3D: pop-up flowers!

Fresh Cut Paper Pop-Up Bouquet

You mail these flat like a greeting card, then they pop up into the prettiest bouquet! I've sent a couple of these to both my parents and grandmother now. Fresh Cut has several different colors and flower arrangements to choose from, including a pop-up sunflower wreath that's perfect for Thanksgiving. Plus I send mine straight from Amazon, so with Prime it's free shipping!
