What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

The Far Side of Cake, Vol. 4

Unfortunately, Homer's dream of being surrounded by beer and boobs was taking a decidedly sinister turn.

Marie enjoyed the company at first, but soon the muppets' unwavering attention began to take its toll.

Later, under the cover of darkness, the Pipe Slugs made a break for it.

Sometimes Liz would wonder, "Why is everything so hard? Where am I going in life? Why me?"

Then one day someone decided to make lemonade.

Thanks to Martha A., Ali, Gypsi H., & Valerie J. for helping us go to there.

Homer...OMG! What a cake! Who could have possibly thought THAT was a good idea? Perhaps it was an intentional homage...maybe?

September 20, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterKarateLady

Sung to "Home on the Range"

Oh give me a cake
Where the boobs don't look fake
And the beer is all nicely arranged
Where seldom is heard
A discouraging word
Cause his head has been cut off, OK?

Pooooooooor Homer's deranged
And the Muppets scared Marie away
Pipe slugs in a herd
Look like tiny pink turds
And now Liz is a cold lemonade.

Some days these things just write themselves...

I'm pretty sure that last cake is supposed to be The Grinch.

September 20, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterEric Stottt

Yay! You used a wreck that I submitted! I feel so special! Really, I do! I will be smiling like an idiot about it all day!

The Homer Simpson cake is so bad it's actually good if you're a Homer fan.

September 20, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterDonkaloosa

A great post from Jen and a great earworm from Sharyn -- my day is complete already :)

September 20, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterwoodnwheel

On the Homer cake. 1) that a marshmellow cake?? O_o;; *stare* pretty sure it is. Question is, is it marshmellowy inside too? O.o...SOMEONE GET ON THAT!
2) You have GOT to be kidding me Mr/Mrs Decorator...if we're going with a Simpson cake, I'm pretty sure you had to have noticed that those 'bottles' don't much look like bottles when flexed up against the 'boobs'.
3) ....Those are the WEIRDEST nipples I have ever seen, they look more like...Bee butts or something.

On Muppet cake....ANYTHING that looks like you cut off Cookie Monster's head is WRONG. WRONG WRONG WRONG! And to top that, they also decapitated the 'MUH-NAMANAH' MONSTERS! *sob*

On Slug cake ....I can't decide if this is suppose to be a 'gender reveal cake' for a little girl (cause it's baby pink...maybe it's a baby shower cake for slugs??) or if the decorator was making a cake for UPS or FedEX just had extra icing and was like 'SQUIIIIIRT! Yeah, pink squiggle turds, looks just like packing peanuts right??'

On Liz ....Liz, take your Zoloft!! We don't have time for you to be an unhappy Sunflower. SMILE darn you!!

Pipe slugs! Augh, too funny! And the lemon cake is hilarious. I love these trips to the Far Side.

September 20, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterLaura P.

The Pipe Slugs gave me such a strange, goofy, slightly gross, "stop motion" type mental image I cant stop laughing. You inspire such wonderful/awful imagination in your readers. I love you for it.

Hahaha! I've said it before, and I'll say it again: I LOVE Gary Larson.

Thank you for another entry into this series.

@ Sharyn: Well done. :)

My Friday is starting out very nicely. It is all uphill from here. Thank you Jen and Sharyn.

September 20, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterMaureen

@Eric - Alas, I think you are correct. I do not think the yellow has improved the Grinch one bit.

@zoomom - Congrats! Which one is yours?!

September 20, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterKarateLady

Thanks for the laughs Sharyn and Jen :D :D

I have followed this blog for over a year, but never took the chance to say, "Thank you"... so I figured that it's about time! This site is my much needed dose of laughter each morning. I work in a pediatric psychiatry office where my patients' sad stories often make me cry... so being able to come here and smile daily is really therapeutic! So thank you Jen, John, the cake wrecks team and all you clever commenters... you are all such a wonderful part of my day :)

I don't know what happened, I suddenly got haiku-inspired this morning:

Homer squints at beer and boobs.
Wreckerator fail.

Cookie's sis Marie
Wilts under the piercing stare
Of Mahna-Manhas.

Pipe slugs slithering
Pinkly look like Barbie's poo
Trying to escape.

Making lemonade
with a CCC named Liz.
Existential fail.

I know it's not up to Haiku Joy's level, but it's my first poetic contribution -- be kind, folks!

September 20, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterLaura

Jen, your commentary on that last one had me giggling for a couple of minutes. Very nice.
Have a good weekend!

September 20, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterAnnie

Whitney: I think the blue Muppet was on one of the early Muppet Show episodes... a shaggy blue ball with eyes, and really long dangly arms and legs. It would have been operated against a black background by puppeteers all in black.

At first glance, though... yeah, Cookie Monster's head.

September 20, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJoel Polowin

Chocolate nipples, eh?
That's almost as scary as the dessert in Annie Mac's visit to Innuendo Bingo. Search Youtube if you like, but it's a little nsfw.

September 20, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterkhereva

After watching Soylent Green, Liz got an awful idea. Liz got a wonderful, awful idea.

September 20, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJust Andrea

I really hope I'm wrong, but those things between the "boobs" (really?) on the Homer cake look like...Frosted Mini Wheats. And I've seen a lot of them, because my daughter loves them.

September 20, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSaraCVT

@Aly2386: 1st: Do you know how much I want your name to be Aly2319? Have you seen Monsters, Inc.? 2rd: glad you took the time to sign the guest book. It's nice to see new faces.

@Laura: Nicely done. : ) I heart haikus.

September 20, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJust Andrea

MORE FAR SIDE!!! *happy dance*

You seriously just made my Friday. :D

September 20, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterCarol

We have big nasty banana slugs here in the PNW. If they were pink they might not look so gross. **blink blink** Nope, they'd actually be worse if they were pink. And oh so very wrong on pretty much every level. o.O

@mel ~ Your Wedding Vowels made me choke. Thanks for that!

@Sharyn ~ Really??? I guess it could be worse. Wait. Now I have images on the Disney movie Home on the Range (the one with Rosanne Barr O.O) mixed with The Simpsons. Let me tell ya, those to don't mash up well. Not.Well.At.All.

September 20, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJodee

I'm old as dirt. I thought the blue Muppet was one of the French Fry Guys from the old McDonaldland commercials with Mayor McCheese and the Hamburglar.

I also saw the Grinch first before it was a lemon. :-)

September 20, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterGinger

@KarateLady - I submitted the Homer cake. I'm just so very proud!

September 20, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterzoomom

I think the beige things creeping up between the "boobs" to Homer look like penises. Deformed ones. Which makes them perfect for this cake!

September 20, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterTLC

I wonder if the intention was to create a post-Ullman vintage Homer, in which case, good job. I can almost hear his Matthau-esque voice.

September 20, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterpikkewyntjie

the Muppets with the "Mahna-Mahna" singer were called Snowths

September 20, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterlittle mouse

Wait! I had to show my son all the Far Side cakes, but volume 2 is missing!

September 20, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterLisa

@Ginger: Apparently, I am as old as dirt, too, because I remember the Fry Guys.

@Whitney: Thank you for bringing up the Mahna Mahna (or Mah-na Mah-na) muppets. I had completely forgotten about them and found a nice little Youtube clip of the original skit. Squee!

September 20, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJust Andrea

The Homer actually looks like Homer!! Very impressive! (Did they come to the right place?) I don't want to get my hopes up too high, but is there a cake under there somewhere, too? (I'm thinking that there is, because H looks mad, and that would make sense, because he probably wants to eat cake, and he can't. Because of the little issue with the hands that aren't there. Poor Homer Head... :-(

@zoomom: Background story?

September 20, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterNight Owl

Laura, one of the things I love about haiku is that they're big enough for everyone to play. Also, I have a level? Whoa.

Pipe slugs, so tender,
so innocent of their plight -
I'll take the first bite.

September 20, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterHaiku Joy

@Night Owl - I wish I had a story for you! I was searching something online when I came across this oddity. It was on a site that was all in French. As a Canadian I am supposed to be fluent in French but, alas, I am not.
Since I was not able to give you a story for the cake, allow me to share another story with you, related to this only by it's French/English bilingual roots.
Once upon a time there was a fine young Canadian couple who got married; he was an anglophone, she a francophone. When their first child was born the proud new daddy suggested the name James Kirk. She, not having ever watched Star Trek and thus not knowing who she was naming her child after, agreed to this lovely name, much to the delight of her Trek loving husband. Eventually she figured out what had happened. When they were expecting their second child she insisted that this child have a name that reflected her French heritage. (Also, she had checked and she was sure that none of the characters from ST:TOS were French.) She was delighted with the name that her husband chose for their second little boy, Jean Luc.

@Just Andrea:
"Then one day someone decided to make lemonade."
Ahhhh...NOW I get it. Soylent Green isn't people, after all. It's just a lumpy sweater. Right? No?
Okay, then It must be something worsted than that...

September 20, 2013 | Unregistered Commentersendingtheclowns

@Joel Polowin
@little mouse
O_O Holy cow, so much muppet learning for me today. Is it bad that I'm absolutely delighted at people knowing all this muppet related stuff? XDD

OOhh! Congrats Zoom, it an entire marshmellow cake or was it marshmellow decorated cake? O.o I must know.

September 20, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterWhitney

@Aly2386: You must be a very special person to do the work that you do, and I just wanted to say "thank you". I hope you do get some respite with all of the silliness that goes on here. One almost can't help but laugh!

September 20, 2013 | Unregistered Commentersendingtheclowns

nice job, Laura
zoomom, you SHOULD be proud. I would have been so frightened of that cake that my pictures would have come out blurry

What the Frak are the "breasts of extreme perkiness" supposed to be?

I didn't see the Grinch, I saw this other Seuss character- maybe he's from Green Eggs & Ham?? (I'm getting old)

September 20, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterBarbara Anne

Laura: Barbie Poo!! - that's a perfect description!

And yes Haiku Joy, you definitely have a level

September 20, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterLindarella

@Jodee: and I'm guessin' that's not a good thing.... :-(

September 21, 2013 | Unregistered Commentermel

Lol oh sheesh. Can't escape the evil pipe slugs no matter where I run to. Or evil neighbors for that matter. I liked that semi happy lemon looking cake lol. Even if it was supposed to be a grinch. Or whatever it was intended to be considering I don't think the wreckerators even know.

September 21, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterArlene

@Just Andrea

Yup, just doing my job ma'am. Bringing the power of Mahna Mahna song for the goodness of mankind. And Muppets. Properly voiced muppets.
(and why yes it is my theme song, :D thank you for asking *cackle*)

September 21, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterWhitney

>implying that being named for James Kirk, the James who is to come (alongside Jim West and James Bond) isn't the most awesome thing in the universe.
>implying it isn't a disaster to be named for the other captain, who surrendered his own ship five minutes into the pilot.
