What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Leggo My Logo

Susan S. ordered a birthday cake with the Ohio State logo on it, which looks like this:

Think something could have gone wrong?

Here's your sign:

"In the naaaame of love!"

Apparently this is a high school logo, though Missy didn't mention which one:

Now the baker reversed the colors, sure, but the W was her real crowning achievement:

Ok, Kassandra, tell us what you want. What you really, really want.

Roger that!

Thanks to Susan, Missy, and Kassandra for spelling it all out for us.

Thank you for using our Amazon links to shop! USA, UK, Canada.

Just more proof that sports and cake just don't mix.

Sort of like Passover and cake.

But everything else is ok.

April 8, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterFluffy Cow

@Fluffy Cow- there should very much be a page of Passover Wrecks. I guarantee if people send them in there will be some absolute smashers. In all senses of the word.

Heretofore I had not noticed that the OSU "O" is an octagan. Not that I would ever vandalize an OSU logo by coloring it in and making it a stop sign...just interesting to know that one could.

While My Logo Gently Weeps (with apologies to the Beatles)

I look at you all see the cake that you say’s mine
While my logo gently weeps
I look at the cake and I see a blank stop sign
Still my logo gently weeps

I don’t know why nobody showed you
How to make a simple “O”
I don’t know what power controls you
It would be pointless to cajole you

I look at this cake and my stomach is churning
While my logo gently weeps
From every past mistake I thought you would be learning
Still my logo gently weeps

I don’t know how you were diverted
This is so perverted, too
Globs of frosting just inserted
Filled in the whole “O”, you

I look at you all see the cake that you say’s mine
While my logo gently weeps
I look at the cake and I see a blank stop sign
Still my logo gently weeps

Oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh, oh

I hope Neil Young doesn't see this. If he does I apologize. I apologize to everyone as I feel this is a song that should not be messed with. Ever. Except it popped into my head two hours ago and I can't get rid of it. So, I'm sorry. Really, really sorry:

Tin cake pans and bakers wrecking
Sport cakes that should be thrown
I’ll stick to a beer and brats now
Two wrecks plus Ohio

Gotta get down to it
Bakers are messing around
Should have been stopped long ago
What if you bought it
A letter that looked like a crown
Or a red, stop-sign shaped “O”

Tin cake cans and bakers wrecking
These cakes I’ll never own
Do I like sports much? No, not really
Two wrecks plus Ohio

I know where Hutto is!! My only claim to fame, I fear.

April 8, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterLarisa

@SuBee: hahahha...good job! ...(agreed...this is a special song for some of us who were around when that incredible, horrific event took place...but after almost 44 years, you are allowed some license here...peace....)

April 8, 2014 | Unregistered Commentermel

Now, see, if they'd only outlined it, they could've seen where the red was supposed to... stop.

...Oh. I guess outlining might not have worked after all, judging by that WJ logo. (Walter Johnson, at an outside guess?)

More instructions being interpreted as string literals...

While I've seen Passover cakes, they were made entirely of matzos, chocolate, and wine. Just as a dessert, not intended to be too fancy. I suppose you could dress it up with icing and make it possible to wreck...

April 8, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterNyperold

@mel and SuBee: Yay! I came up totally blank this morning. I'm glad to see my fellow songwriters didn't have the same problem. Well done!

April 8, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterSharyn

It's like the game Scribblish for bakers.

April 8, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterSandy

Oh my gosh, Mel and SuBee, those were BRILLIANT. You guys are just getting better and better; you're going to be giving Sharyn a real run for her money soon! And you're forgiven, SuBee -- it's not like you were mocking the actual event, just borrowing the music and lyrical line. I'm sure Neal would greatly enjoy this version!

April 8, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterLaura

The Hutto Hippos are close by. I hope I don't have to order from the same bakery. <shakes head>

I'm flabbergasted by the OSU logo attempt. Wrong. Just wrong.

As for the JW logo, I think they were just in over their skill level. Good intent can make up for some things.

April 8, 2014 | Unregistered Commenterlisadh

FYI, the sports team at Hutto High School is known as the Hippos. Hutto Hippos, proof that Texan's have a sense of humor.

April 8, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterD'marie

Mel and Suebee ahahahaha :D. @Sharyn, it's ok we all have off days. As for those cakes O_o about sums it up

April 8, 2014 | Unregistered Commentermindy1

@Nyperold, we make cakes on Passover out of egg whites and ground almonds-trust me there is so much room for error!

April 8, 2014 | Unregistered Commenterpointaken

The JW is my high school. That logo has always been butchered. Wish I still had the pics from the cakes that were made for graduation! Go James Wood!

April 8, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterRandi

I believe the second one is the James Wood High School logo (not to be confused with James Woods High in Family Guy).

April 8, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterMH

Heeeeyyyy... I recognize that "Hutto H"... they are the small town just up North from us! Fun to see local stuff hit this Crazy funny website!!!

April 8, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterSherry C

The Hutto Hippos! I had a friend whose claim to fame was that he was once the Hutto Hippo! I googled it (not knowing what the Hutto H looked like) and the odd thing is that they got the right design for the H while still missing the whole point of the message. That makes it a classic cake wreck, imho.

April 8, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterStacy

I...have no words.
However, I do have to admit that when it comes to the "WJ" cake...I half expected to see some form of a phallic symbol on the resulting cake wreck...possibly from spending WAY too much time on CakewreXXX hahaha
@SuBee and @Mel - Sprinkles for you both!!! BRAVA!!!
@ Sharyn - you have MORE than made up for it in spades in your previous songs my dear, you are entitled to have songwriters block :)

April 8, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterLise

I"m concerned how many of us know about the Hutto Hippos. That in and of itself should scare some of you.

April 8, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterFlora

I live in the heart of Buckeye country, and I can't imagine ANYONE being unfamiliar with the Ohio State logo. Even if a person has never seen a sporting event and think football is played with a racket, the "block O" is so ubiquitous that even infants recognize it.

April 8, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterDave

I needed a laugh and this gave it to me. I can't help but wonder what a cake done with my junior high school colors would look like. Go Wildcats!

April 8, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterBarbara

At least the 'H' looks good; yay??

April 8, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterErica

I can't let this opportunity pass.

The high school logo is actually a high school in my home town. James Wood is the school that logo, and that wreck, is attached to.

But seeing as they are the arch-rival to my high school, it is highly amusing.

April 8, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterLady Mars

I live in hutto. That's actually a decent representation of the Hutto H. Although I'm surprised they didn't ask for a hippo. Everyone in town has a hippo statue in their yards. As someone who grew up in Houston with much less school spirit, it took a while to get used to LOL

April 8, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterJenny

The JW logo belongs to James Wood High School, Winchester, VA.

April 8, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterTachybaptus

I have been reading this blog too long. When I looked at the original WJ logo I thought, "how unfortunate that the W appears to have a problem that may need Viagra." I'm sorry!!! Truly sorry!!! It's the fault of Cake Wrecks. I totally thought for a second that the cake version was an improvement. I'm going to go stand over here in the corner now. Bye.

April 8, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterGinger

Just want the Hutto H? But the Hutto High School mascot is a hippo! Think of what a beautiful wreck a hippo would have been!

April 8, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterTiffany

@Sharyn: Thank you! (That is how I come up most mornings….) (And you are more than entitled to a day or several to just relax!)
@Laura: Thank you so much for those kind words! But Sharyn is in no danger from me – she’s consistently quick, funny and absolutely amazing, while I plod along periodically. I sometimes think Sharyn is Jen’s long lost sister.
@mindy1: Thanks for the laughter and the smile; mission accomplished….

April 8, 2014 | Unregistered Commentermel

If only the Hutto Hippo had been portrayed. Its tusks are quite tightly implanted in the hippopotamian jaw. Unlike the elephant suggested by the JW logo, where the Tuscaloosa.

April 8, 2014 | Unregistered Commenterkhereva

Wow, I had no idea there were so many of us Central Texans here! I wonder if the bakery's client ordered just the 'H' in an attempt to avoid receiving a Wreck. Bless her (or his) heart.

April 8, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterDeb

@Lise: Thanks for the sprinkles! :-)

April 8, 2014 | Unregistered Commentermel

Another Hutto resident here. As a homeschooling mom, our family does not partake in the hippo madness the rest of the town suffers from. My hubby & I are proud Buccaneers (B'Wood class of '90 & '91, respectively) & our kids are lions & lambs. I love this wreck, though, & wonder where it was created.

April 9, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterLeAnn

Oh man lmao. I can only imagine the looks on the customers faces when they saw these cakes. I still can't fathom what goes on in the mind of the wreckerator especially after being shown a picture of what they want.

April 9, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterArlene

it's never wrong to desecrate the OSU logo, or badmouth anything having to do with that school down south.

April 9, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterSue Ellen Mischke

It *is* rather amazing how many Hippos walk among us. I was proud Hippo until high school. Then I became a Dragon! Much better! (I can only imagine the dragon disasters!)
Greets to fellow Hutto Hippos and Round Rock Dragons!

April 9, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterAncient Hippo

@Ancient Hippo - My oldest becomes a Dragon next year! Woo hoo!

Rose Parade here we come! :-D

April 9, 2014 | Unregistered Commenterlisadh

Crazy to see a local cake! The JW cake is one of our local high schools - James Wood HS. I've made one of these logos before as well - I also switched the colors, since we use both interchangeably.

April 9, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterBecky

Go HIPPOS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

April 9, 2014 | Unregistered Commenterpinball

My first thought on the Ohio State cake:
"Stop! Wreckin' Time! Can't frost this!"

April 9, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterNerfbomb
