What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Wedding Wrecks: Just Leave It

It's the latest budget-friendly sensation sweeping the nation - or at least a couple of weddings:

Leaves and twigs!

Not only are they "beautiful," they're a great way to upcycle those lawn clippings!

Just grab a leaf blower, and bam!

The cake's decorated!

Drape them for a drapey effect!

Or just jam them all over!

Leaves and twigs!

And hey, if that doesn't work: TINY PLASTIC SHARKS.

Thanks to Ann C., Adrienne H., Kim W., & Jen A. for the most baffling double-sided wedding wreck I've seen in at least a few weeks.

Thank you for using our Amazon links to shop! USA, UK, Canada.

Obviously they met in the Botanic Gardens during a Sharknado. How romantic!

What, no Tartan Day cakes?

April 6, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterTheCreepyTribble

The last one needs a little plastic Ian Ziering on the top with a chainsaw.

April 6, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterFluffy Cow

Quick! Is there a Botanist in the room? Let's hope none of the plant specimens thrust into those cakes are toxic. I recognize the California Pepper twigs and berries stuck into the first one. Mmmmm, Spicy!
Then there's the last one…! At least the baby plastic seals are headed in the opposite direction from the plastic sharks. (wedding of two Sea World employees?)

Alternately, if your lawn is a mess after this brutal winter, you can simply cover it with cakes.

April 6, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterSuBee

YES!!! Sharks!!!! LOVE IT!

I really want to know the backstory on that last cake.

April 6, 2015 | Unregistered Commenterjuice

It was only a matter of time before "Sharknado" wrecks started to happen. If you look closely in the background, the cupcakes in the rear of the display have sharks jumping out of them as well. Maybe their first song to dance to as a couple was the theme song from JAWS?

April 6, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterCookiemama

I'm going to hazard a guess and say the ring bearer came along and jammed those sharks and seals in there after the fact.

April 6, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterElissa

After having spent the last 3 days cleaning up debris from 85 mph straightline winds, I can honestly say I've seen enough twigs and leaves to last a while....I would, however, LOVE to know the story of the shark cake....

April 6, 2015 | Unregistered Commentermiss_paper

The first one needed some sort of topper, but I rather liked all of them, especially the last one. It was serious in the front, silly in the back, and perfect for fans of goofy monster movies. Or a blended family with young Shark Week fans. Sorry, I know y'all hate real flowers on cakes but to each his own and not every couple can afford a four-figure fondant masterpiece.

I am inspired to make a Reptilicus cake for our anniversary next year. Isn't the 26th the Tivoli-smashing monster anniversary?

April 6, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterCatTrampoline

As if the branches weren't bad enough, the cake layers in the top picture look like rolls of toilet paper.

April 6, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterAisling

Maybe they could cover it with heather? Sadly, I would do that. And still eat it.

April 6, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterTheCreepyTribble

Mmmmmm all that sappy goodness for extra filling in the cakes

April 6, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterSam

Seriously wtf is with the last one

April 6, 2015 | Unregistered Commentermindy1

I just noticed the last two photos are of the same cake!!! Just wrong on so many levels!!!

April 6, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterKelli

Holy sharknados Batman!!! Someone needs to be rescued from the bakery, they keep sending out signals made of greenery for some reason....
Right, into the Batmobile Robin, Gotham isn't ready for wreckorators of this magnitude, this may be our only chance to save the city!...
Just WOOOOOWWWW!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've done some flower arrangements for weddings and such; I can tell that heart shaped cake has leather leaf fern (not toxic) on it, and it's all DRIED UP! When they try to pick up that fern, it's going to "splode" all over the place because when they get that dry, they are incredibly brittle and if you barely touch it, it falls apart. Not to mention that if there are spores (fern seeds) on the under sides of the leaves, they will float about the room for hours. For the most part, most people don't have a reaction to ferns in general, but to have a misting of black dust and brown "crumblies" on a wedding cake doesn't really seem very appetizing...<HURK>

I love Wedding Wrecks! Mean but funny, especially that last one. Although, I'm not sure you could combine the sharks with flowers on the same cake in any way that wouldn't be wrecky.

April 6, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterStiria_the_fast_one

While I believe baby's breath is one of the least expensive of the floral shrubbery you can buy, I think they blew the flower budget on it for that cake. o.O And the sharks? Umm..yeah, I got nuthin'.

@SaraCVT ~ I saw your Friday comment last night and I just want to give you a big hug and bring my snuggly little grandboy over so you can get some good squishes. Aren't you somewhere in my neck of the woods? Or is that @Jodi? Anyway, I gave him some extra squishes last night and whispered to him that they are from a really special friend. :-)

#4: You can just feel the allergies!

April 6, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterKing Josiah

I'm with Juice; I really want to know the story on the shark cake.
The rest of them, for some reason, made the Jake from State Farm quote run through my head:
"They sound hideous."
"Well, they're Cake Wrecks, so..."

April 6, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterNagzilla

Well, that's unfortunate. Because there's probably a way for sharks + wedding cake to be awesome, but not here!

April 6, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterErica

I should know after all this time that drinking something while reading this blog is NOT a good idea. When I got to the leaf blower comment, I nearly shot iced tea through my nose.

As for last cake: maybe the National Weather Service issued a sharknado warning, and the wreckerator was trying to get the cake to shelter, but didn't make it in time.

The rest of these: leaf blower, indeed. It's one thing to put a small nosegay of fresh flowers on top (not stuck into) the cake. But this much? There are better ways to add some fiber!

April 6, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterTLC

After reviewing the last picture, it seems that donut holes were also served (see pan on right,) and that people gobbled those up.
Good choice.

April 6, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterNotMe

I am the parent of 2 special needs teenagers. I know what you are going through, but I don't know what to say. There is no way I can make you "feel better" at this point. It may be years before you "feel better". But do know you are not alone in how you feel. There are lots of support groups online and on Facebook, where you can vent and learn and be supported so you can support your children. Your daughter (or DIL) especially will need support, because society will blame her for EVERYthing. Best wishes for this journey which you didn't ask for! [hugs]

Is it just me or does the green shark on the left look like it might actually be a seal that someone snuck in there?

April 6, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterCatburglar

@ Sharyn, I was thinking the exact same thing! Ha ha!

April 6, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterSandy

Ahhh...Nothing says "wedded bliss" like a beautifully trimmed (but not too much) cake from our newest department: "Weeded Bliss"-here at Rake & Bake, your One-Stop Shop for whatever you need between the driveway and the kitchen! Come check us out today, and bring a friend (to help you find your way back out)!
P.S.: I think the sharks could be an "in joke" that the couple will get a kick out of. (That, or they took the wrong turn at Albuquerque.)

April 6, 2015 | Unregistered Commentersendingtheclowns

@SuBee, that's the best idea I've heard in a long time. After the icy and freezing winter we had, now that the crocuses (croci?) are finally up, I think I'll decorate the rest of the lawn with cakes. Festive AND tasty!

April 6, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterFM

I actually like the little sharks!

April 6, 2015 | Unregistered Commenterkerry

@Kelli, I didn't notice that until you pointed it out! Now I'm even more baffled! Cakenado! A blockbuster involving excessive Baby's Breath and plastic sharks! Getcher tickets now!

And, @King Josiah, you beat me to it...I was going to say that I would be allergic to all of these cakes! Literally.

@Jodee, I'm in Wyoming. Forgot where you were -- Colorado? Now I'm going to go read SarahCVT's Friday post. Have been on vacation and missed a few days.

April 6, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterJodi

I commend your restraint in using the term "twig and berries" .

April 6, 2015 | Unregistered Commenterkristen

I'm involved with a guy who's worked on the Sharknado movies. I already know we won't be getting married, but we especially wouldn't if he insisted on a cake like that one! ROFL with horror. I'm guessing the couple couldn't afford a separate groom's cake, in which case this is one way to do it...

April 6, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterKaren

I just...huh.......I just don't get it.

Well, at least you'll get your daily recommended fiber intake.

April 6, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterRuthie

Bring me a SHRUBBERY!

April 6, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterDevin

I think maybe a couple of them are sea lions and dolphins.

April 6, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterVicky

Where's your ode to dyngus day?

April 6, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterJan

@sendingtheclowns: Looney Tunes reference FTW!!! I don't know how many times he used that phrase, but it was at least a half dozen.

April 6, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterVaBeach alemaP

Glad I wasn't the only one to see stacked toilet paper rolls in that first one lol

April 6, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterSarah B.

Blink, blink.
I just, I just can't even...
Sharks? PLASTIC sharks???

April 6, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterHeather

Is it me? I dont feel like these look so bad. Theyre not great but they look like really good amateur efforts with the exception of the sharks.

April 6, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterLew

Please if any baker is around here I have a couple of questions:
What happens if among the guests is someone allergic to polen or some leaf used for decorating the cake? ( You just can't know everything about your guests)
This looks like one of those trends that can go bad in the wrong hands:I recall some examples of cooks trying to emulate ferran adriá without the proper knowlegde of chemistry and customers ending at the ER. Does anyone check if the foliage used is safe?

April 6, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterMaría

New goal in life: make awesome gummy shark cake! Those things would be perfect with a little frosting...

Anyone else think the topper on the third cake looks like a
Weeping Angel?

April 6, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterAna

I wonder how many of those plants were grown organically and are certified food safe? How many are poisonous?

April 6, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterVictoria

@Jodi ~ Nope, I'm in Washington, north of Seattle. :-)

My allergies are going crazy today. I'm blaming these wrecks!

April 6, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterJodee

I can't believe only one "shrubbery" reference. I thought it from cake #1, and lost it totally on the front of the sharknado cake. MP was galloping through my brain.

April 6, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterDi F

Over-flowered cake
Got too many twigs and leaves?
Just add some toy sharks.
