What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Sunday Sweets: Wintry Wonders

Hey all! john (the hubby of Jen) here and it's my turn to pick today's sweets. It's finally starting to get a bit chilly here in Florida (60 degrees! Brrr!), and that has me in the mood to post a few icy beauties.

(Made by Edible Art)

Wouldn't it be awesome if Super Man burst out of the top?

Check out this adorable little deer.

And for our mostly fondant free sweet, we have the Abominable Snowman also known as The Bumble from Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer.

And since 'tis the season to deck the halls, I thought you might appreciate these:

Cake Christmas ornaments! Brilliant!

And lastly:

These are wonderful. The ornaments and the light would be great for a Tree Decorating party. The light cake maker needs to make one of a broken ornament.

Those last two look too good to eat!

OMG! I love the ornament cakes and the Christmas light cake!

WV: biata - these cakes are much biata than the others you have shown this week!

December 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterJenniffer

Oh, I adore that Abominable Snowman cake!! He's so cute!

December 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterSurfie

Wow - great looking cakes!

But...60 degrees, Jen? Here in Ontario, Canada, that would be simply balmy. It's 27F right now (-3C). That's chilly!

December 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterJim Todd

I love the ornaments! The bumble is cute too.

December 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterRita

I like the long as it's sleeping and the eternal rest. That would just be sad.

December 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterHalf Assed Kitchen

Oooooohhhhhhh . . . those ornaments! That light! WHAT cupcake envy? I think all cupcakes would be envious of them! Wowzers!

December 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterWriteCards

I L*O*V*E Bumble! Those ornaments look really cute too!

December 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterCathy

The ornaments and the light bulb are beautiful, but they don't look edible.

I love the polar bear iceberg.
"Wouldn't it be awesome if Super Man burst out of the top?"
Jen, you have got to be the nerdiest person on earth. I mean that as a compliment, of course. God bless you.

December 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterGary

The Bumble!! Bumbles bounce! The ornaments are amazing too. I think I would be afraid to eat the christmas light one....looks a little TOO real hehe

December 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterShannon

The face of Bumble looks like fondant to me. I could be wrong.

I wish it was 60 here. (it's 17 degrees at most)

I'm in love with that deer cake. And the ornaments! And the Lights! Too lovely to eat, methinks.

December 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

LOL. I love how 60F is cold.

*looks at the 27F on the thermometer*

I wish it was 60F.

December 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterNightfalltwen

I love the light bulb and Christmas ornament cakes. I wish I knew how to make them.

And by the way, I'm also from Canada so I have to say "You find that 60 is chilly and it makes you think of winter? That was the average tempeture here last July!"

(Here is is currently -1°C, meaning about 30°F).

December 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterCostumeholic

Now THOSE are cupcake cakes! (See, there has to be a way to do that right-- and the folks at cupcake envy have done it.)

I think they all look too good to eat. Especially the adorable little deer... it's too cute!

December 6, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterjackie31337

these are great! i LOVE the snowman and the decorative cakes

December 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterNatballs

dear lord! they're all so delightful this week!

am especially fond of the brown and pink (awesome color combo!!) cake with the precious lil deer sleeping on top.

ps. missed the brouhaha and hullabaloo here a couple of days ago. seems like i always miss out on the excitement when i'm out of town. hmmmph. ;-)

December 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterTerry Lee

Those ornaments are great! And I thought the same thing about Superman.

December 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterKarla

correct me if I'm wrong, but some of the elements on the Bumble look like fondant, so it's not entirely fondant free, eh? I love the light, simple ADORE the ornaments, but that little deer? OH MY GOSH, so sweet.. there's no way I could eat it!

December 6, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterncflaggs

There seems to be no bounds to a good baker's imagination and creativity! Wonderful cakes!! I think I enjoy the Sweets even more than the Wrecks.

As for 60 degrees, I grew up in FL, I know and understand what you mean!! Don't let all those cold, cold Northerners get you down!! It all depends on what you're used to. Go have some hot chocolate or a hot toddy...the key word being HOT.

December 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMellodee

That deer cake looks too cute to eat! Nice job picking the sweets today, John!

Oh, and Seattle hit 30 this weekend. Black ice galore last night. Yikes!

December 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterHobbit

Okay, so the deer cake is adorable! However... I fail to see the "winter" connection. Unless it's "hunting season". Which I have nothing against, but it is a cute little baby deer, and I hope no one is hunting cute little baby deer. Which are born in the spring...

December 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterRosie_Kate

I love, love, love the deer cake. Awwwwwwwwwwww.

The polar bear one is awesome, but I agree it brings Superman to mind. Clever.

How rad are the ornament cupcakes? I want one.

The light cake - totally cool.

We're fans of the Bumble here. What a great idea for a cake.

December 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterCookieMonster

Awww...that dear deer would be perfect for a baby shower cake. If the expectant mother could weather all the "Bambi" jokes, that is.

December 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterBlue Jean

60 degrees!?! We MIGHT get to 30F. today, but wind is 25 mph, so subtract 3 or 4 or 20 degrees! High tomorrow supposed to be 17! But no wind...
You can KEEP your frosty sweets! (Cute tho they may be)

December 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterEvenSong

Psh, 60 degrees is BALMY! It's 10 degrees F here and I'm just barely breaking out my winter coat.

The last cake looks so awesome, but is that fork real or sculpted? Because if it's sculpted I can just picture a friend of someone who once put a fork into a light socket ordering that for them.

December 6, 2009 | Unregistered Commentermeg

Those are so pretty! I love the polar bear one myself.

I know what you mean about the 60 degrees being cold! I'm in CA and I start being cold when it drops below 80. 60 has me shivering and hiding under the fleece blankets!

December 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterKrysta

The last one was so good, I had to take a second to make the connection to the fork. It looked out of place until I remembered it was cake! Great job!

December 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterEmerald76

Cupcake Envy's entries took my breath away! I'll take those ornaments, PLEASE!

December 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterVeronica Wald

60F? Bwahahaha! Where I am, right now, it's gotten UP to 12! We're having an unusually early cold spell. I wish it would warm up some and snow.

To be fair, for most of my life I lived in places where anything below 60 was downright chilly. I get it. Trust me when I say one's standards of what is cold can change dramatically!

Those cakes are adorable!

December 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterRachel

Love love love!!!

Cold weather - it's all relative. If you are used to 80 & up, 60 is cold. I say this as a Northerner who now lives in the South.

I would have no problem eating him.. first his legs so he cant run away, then his body. Ill eat the head last so i can hear him scream the longest!

December 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterJust kidding!!!!!

60 degrees is very, very warm! It's only 12F here in Denver, CO! Which is why I'm indoors reading this blog instead of out shoveling snow...which I should be doing.

Actually the weather here is quite appropriate for cold themed cakes. I love the first one, it's so pretty. They're all great though.

December 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterJessica

I live in the Caribbean and I wish i could send you some of our sun and warmth!!

December 6, 2009 | Unregistered Commentertoast

It WAS sixty degrees here a couple weeks ago-- now we have 20 degree highs and snow predicted this week. I hate that!

But I love that Bumble cake-- nuts and coconut-- like a big Almond Joy! These all look really cool, and I could get past the cuteness of that one to eat it, but not some of the others. I mean, if you've always been careful about not eating glass, well...just chew very carefully, that's all. :P

December 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Absolutely lovely! Love the ornaments especially. But as some of the other readers pointed out, I think there is fondant on the abominable snowman.

December 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

OK, it must be 27 degrees everywhere else except "chilly" Floriday, because it's 27 degrees in Omaha, too. And it's snowing. And with the wind chill, it feels like 20 degrees. Please post some sunshine cakes to warm us up!

December 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

I love it! Paperback Writer is correct about cupcake cakes.

December 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

They're amazing!
But seriously? Up here in Michigan, some people would kill to get a day in December when it's warmer than 30F!

December 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterCarlie

*LOVE* the Christmas Bulb, the Ornaments and the Deer! Sooo Cute!!!

December 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterJ-Designer

AAAWWW!!! That deer is just TOO cute!

The ornaments are gorgeous.

You think 60 is cold? We're looking at once-a-decade snow in Sacramento.

December 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterFelixAndAva

The cake Christmas ornaments are AMAZING! I would definitely eat those. :]

December 6, 2009 | Unregistered Commentermollymouse

These were WONDERFUL!
I think the little deer is so freaking adorable! I want one for Christmas day.

December 6, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterjess

The abominable snowman is the cutest. I didn't care for the bulb and electrical cord. It's very well done, but I'm just not comfortable with putting an electrical cord in my mouth. I'm having visions of electrocution by cake, unrealistic as that may be.

December 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterGreatBlue

I love the last one! Terrific work!
