What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Sunday Sweets: Swing Cakes

In case any of you have been blissfully unaware 'til now, there's an election coming up here in the U.S.

As someone "lucky" enough to live in a "swing" state, I'm afraid to turn on the TV or answer the phone anymore, what with all the mud-slinging, name-calling, and incessant demands on my attention. Plus sometimes a campaign volunteer calls. [shudder]

So today let's make our own fun.  Let's forget about Red States and Blue States for a few minutes, and instead look at some of the prettiest red and blue cakes I could find.

Since we're talking about elections, let's start with...

...and stripes!

Whether you live in the city...

By Whipped Bakeshop

 Or down by the sea...

By Laurie Clarke Cakes

...the important thing to remember is that we all like cake.

I'm told the women's vote is especially sought after this year.

 I vote for this:

Can you wear fondant?  Just asking.

I know there are some big choices in this election, but try not to get ruffled.

...or too tents:

After all, the important thing is that you vote.  You can even mail in some ballots!

By Cakebee

I'm using owl post this year.

And remember, if you're using a paper ballot, fill in those circles completely.

We don't want to leave Chad -- or anyone else -- hanging.

(Or is it still too soon for hanging chad jokes?)

Once the election is over, maybe we can stop talking about red OR blue, and remember how well these colors can work together.

Why are there 4 pairs of shoes outside the "anniversary" tent?

September 23, 2012 | Unregistered Commenteramber

Wow! The gorgeous red dress reminds me of Cinderella's, but in a better color than those insipid pastels. And that last one is just glorious. Thanks for the reminder, that red and blue are Good Colors, Jen, from someone else who is hearing "...And I approve this message" far too often lately.

This is Merry, and I approve these cakes.

Red, White and Blue are awesome colors together. I agree...too many people get mired down in "their side" and forget that is what this country is all about...UNITED. LOVE TODAY'S CAKES!

Is that eagle edible on the last cake? Gorgeous! God Bless America!

Love Sunday Sweets...and all the other days!
During election years, I keep a list of all the famous people I hang up on...even if they are recorded messages!

See that second cake? Everyone got a good look at it? That is the correct way to use pre-made candies/confections on a cake.

@amber: Sometimes families grow a little between anniversaries. Notice that two of those pairs of shoes are slightly smaller and not as neatly arranged compared to the first two.

September 23, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterNaomi

I would definitely wear that dress cake if it came in actual dress form.

What a great blog! new follower, I'll be back!

Some of those cakes made me dizzy, but it is nice to know there are still some confectionary artists out there that can pull together amazing cakes, and invoke some patriotism to boot.

September 23, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterStacyB

Exactly how many people are celebrating their anniversary in that blue tent?

September 23, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterPeacefulDave

amber, I wondered the same thing.

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the Philly cake! (A subtle shout-out to another historically swingy state?)

September 23, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAlex

Aside from the cracker jack cake, most of these cakes aren't terribly impressive. I'm particularly irked by the eagle cake with the obviously pre-purchased, QVC-style topper, as well as the "topsy turvy" cake that is a hot mess of over-decoration.

Sunday's at cake wrecks are usually so pretty...disappointing this week. I know there is better work out there.

September 23, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMIzzbee

With the Fleur de Lis, I think the eagle and flag cake was to celebrate a Boy Scout who earned the highest award. Congrats!

September 23, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterVandalfan

I adore the anniversary tent cake, and have no problem with the extra shoes-- but the tent stakes were a bit disturbing even so.

September 23, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterHappy Camper

Does that really say "Sharyn"??? How lucky are we that you are posting here, too!

September 23, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterKristin

Love this! Cake unites us, and yes, it's great to remember that we're all in this together. har! :D xo to Sharyn!

September 23, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterStoich91

Why do we even judge candidates on their political stance when we should really be judging them by CAKE!

Yay to Sharyn! Great post.

September 23, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterNewb

Can you wear fondant? Yes, but why would you want to? Buttercream is ever so much better... ;)

In Florida, we still don't joke about chad. You want to start a fight as a diversion to get away from a bad blind date- bring up that subject and enlist bystanders. POOF you're out of there without notice.

The last cake is beautiful and a reminder why we in the U.S. put up with all of this "carp" called politics. Thanks, Sharyn!

I live in a swing state too, and I agree that I can't wait for it to be over. Add to that the nasty posts on Facebook, and it's almost more than I can take. I love your message over the Eagle cake: I wish evergone would take that to heart.

September 23, 2012 | Unregistered Commentercal

As great as this post was, I saw "Swing Cakes" and thought, Oh boy! Swing dancing themed cakes! These Sweets were lovely anyway.

September 23, 2012 | Unregistered Commentermovingjpegs

I don't know - can we hang Chad?

Written by a Florida Gal in a county that used fill-in-the-bubbles and had no recount issues...

September 23, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJoanie

I, too, LOVE the Philly cake (home town!). All of these cakes are spectacular. (And it's NOT too soon for a hanging chads joke!)

September 23, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterKaren

I live in the media market of a swing state so I feel your pain.

September 23, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterpikkewyntjie

Can you wear fondant? There used to be an erotic TV show called "The Red Shoe Diaries"... one episode involves a woman having herself decorated as a cake for her lover...

September 23, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterCapt. Video

I wish that I had a song for Sharyn...Good job girl.

September 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterEla

I don't know about 'swing states' and such [being an Aussie and all] but do you know that our National elections are coming up soon too. Reasons to avoid the news are doubled for me because hearing about our own elections is too much politics without having to hear about another county's as well.

I'd much rather hear about/see such cakes any day.

September 24, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterwolfkit

LOVED your comment on the last cake. My best friends are on the opposite end of the political spectrum from me, and it's astounding how well we can get on together, despite disagreeing on some issues.

September 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJeanette

Ummm...did anyone else see the massive spider in the window behind the LOVE cake? *shiver*

Also, I love this blog and will hug it daily!

September 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterHeather

That last cake is for a very lucky Eagle Scout - who is meant to keep the topper as a reminder of all his hard work. Congrats to the Scout and the baker!

September 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJacqui

Great job, Sharyn!!

September 24, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterlisadh

I really do not like that "topsy turvy" cake -- it is way too topsy or is it turvy. Whatever it is it is bad.

September 24, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterdcgirl!

Was it ever too soon for hanging chad jokes?

September 24, 2012 | Unregistered Commenter"Erin"

As a swing dancer, I saw the title of the post and got really excited. And then I saw the cakes, and I still loved seeing the beauties. But it made me really want a Sunday Sweets based on swing dancing/big band, maybe the 30s and 40s, and possibly a little Elvis (it's probably a little easier to find Elvis than swing dance cakes.)

September 25, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterChristina Costley

I really like how you ended this post. The right words and the right cake.

September 25, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAndrea

Although I really love all of the cakes, I'm curious why there are fleur de lis on the eagle cake. Aren't they traditionally French?

September 25, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterbridgie

Sooo looking forward to when that last cake's day has come! But was there popcorn inside the stripes cake, or was that a red herring?

September 26, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterApril H

I think the last one was made for an embassy due to the French fleur de lis on it. Stunning and tasteful (and boy do i wish i could taste it)>

September 26, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterccat

The birds on the Cakebee cake are by Etsy seller FeltMeUp Designs. : ) I used a pair of birds from her as my wedding cake topper too!

September 26, 2012 | Unregistered Commentertigerlilly327

If you want to do owl post and get your own felt owls , this is the blog of the lady who made those adorable felt bird cake toppers used by cakebee!
I have been her facebook stalker for ages now and was WAY excited to find that picture here :)

that last one is amazing.
