What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

A Tail Of WHOA

CW reader Eric ordered a "pin the tail on the donkey" cake for his twin girls' fourth birthday party.

They got this:

So many jokes, so little time.
Let's just stick with: OUCH.

Thanks to Eric T. for the hee-haws.

a) They totally used that picture on purpose.
b) Who orders a 'pin the tail on the donkey' cake anyway??
c) C'mon Jen; you know you wanna make this a caption contest. :D

Pin the tail on the dong key!

December 26, 2014 | Unregistered Commentersendingtheclowns

Wow. I wonder what that wreckerator has been "pinning" lately to make them think that a tail goes. . . .there.

I'm just surprised there's no dong-key jokes yet.

Right as I was reading this, my ninja daughter appeared behind me.

"Oh, what's that! A cake?"

I have never hit "PAGE DOWN" so fast in my life.

This is one of those examples where the baker allllmost had it. The donkey is actually decently drawn.

I'm trying to decide if I am disappointed there wasn't a series of cakes riffing on this theme, or I am filled with gratitude that there is not a series of cakes riffing on this theme.

December 27, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterKathleen

Lmao. I can imagine now he had to explain why the tail was where it was. That had to be an entertaining explanation.

Quick. Smooth out some icing. Or maybe the decorators thought it was for a Bachelorette party?

December 27, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterQue Sara Lee

Let us be fair, one is blindfolded when one staggers forth to pin the tail and the laughs are about all the inappropriate places the tail lands. Considering this, the decorator got the spirit of the cake exactly.

December 27, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterAlison in Indiana

Yes Alison, I'd say you got it exactly.

And so did these decorators.

December 28, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterAisha

I have to agree, the decorator got the cake exactly in the spirit of the game. If it is a wreck, then it is a client-caused one.

Of course, it would have been even more in the spirit of the game if the picture would have been of a donkey without tail and then there would have been a flotsam tail, which decorator would have stuck into cake, blindfolded. Or maybe just given it along with the cake for the birthday children to do that in the start of the party.

Dear Baker,

Sometimes I, too, feel sad that I didn't have wealthy, doting parents to order me fancy custom cakes for my childhood birthday parties. However, the correct way to deal with such feelings is to go home a bit early (just tell the boss you're getting a cold), pour yourself a hefty shot of Bourbon and perhaps play the Was (Not Was) classic: "Hello, Dad? I'm In Jail" really loud a few times until you feel better.

Don't take your unhappiness out on somebody's kid.

December 28, 2014 | Unregistered Commenterms_xeno

My 12 year old son came up, stared hard at that cake, then piped up with "Huh. The decorator must have been blindfolded too!"

December 28, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterDenita TwoDragons

What did the baker think that the tail was, and why did they think that there was an appropriate place to put it on a 4-yr-old's cake?

Imagine how that baker must have been feeling that day. He was probably about to quit.
